Several studies have reported that health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adolescents has decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, HRQoL was analyzed in young people aged 13 to 17 years after the end of the pandemic. For this purpose, we followed up at three different points in time: before the pandemic (2019), during (2021) and after the pandemic restrictions (2022).A time-lag design in three phases was used, with a total of 2027 adolescents completing the Kidscreen-10 HRQoL questionnaire. ANOVA and logistic regression models were used to analyze the influence of gender, playing sports and mental health treatment. The results obtained showed a worsening of HRQoL in 2021, when young people returned to school on a blended learning basis. This worsen-ing occurred regardless of gender. In 2022, once all restrictions were removed, boys recovered health-related quality of life to pre-pandemic levels, but this did not occur in girls. The same happened with young people in mental health treatment.

AIM: To analyse and characterize the pattern of working and mobile phone usage distances for common users of electronic devices and computers. METHODS: Transversal descriptive study consisting of a screening campaign evaluating the visual status of different professionals working with computers or electronic devices more than 2h per day. A total of 100 healthy patients with a mean age of 41.2 (range: 20-62) years were revised and subdivided according to job subgroups. A battery of screening tests was performed to all participants in a single session at the working environment of each of them, including measurement of the working distance (WD), arm length, and mobile phone usage distances (MPUD). RESULTS: The WD was significantly longer than MPUD (61.22±12.35 vs 32.22±6.35 cm; P<0.001). Likewise, MPUD was significantly shorter than the arm length (74.44±4.65 cm; P<0.001). A total of 4% (4/100) and 91% (91/100) of patients had a WD and MPUD of 40 cm or below, respectively. A weak although statistically significant correlation was found between WD and MPUD (r=0.387, P<0.001) as well as between WD and arm length (r=0.260, P=0.009). Statistically significant differences were detected among job subgroups in WD (P=0.021), being longer for militaries compared to university researchers and lecturers (P=0.025). CONCLUSION: Working and mobile phone usage distances vary significantly among common users of computers and digital devices, although the use of mobile phones tends to be performed at significantly closer distances. This parameter should be considered when planning any type of optical correction, especially for presbyopia

Tuning the Photonic Behavior of Symmetrical bis-BODIPY Architectures: The Key Role of the Spacer Moiety

Herein we describe the synthesis, computationally assisted spectroscopy, and lasing properties of a new library of symmetric bridged bis-BODIPYs that differ in the nature of the spacer. Access to a series of BODIPY dimers is straightforward through synthetic modifications of the pending ortho-hydroxymethyl group of readily available C-8 (meso) ortho-hydroxymethyl phenyl BODIPYs. In this way, we have carried out the first systematic study of the photonic behavior of symmetric bridged bis-BODIPYs, which is effectively modulated by the length and/or stereoelectronic properties of the spacer unit. The designed bis-BODIPYs display bright fluorescence and laser emission in non-polar media. The fluorescence response is governed by the induction of a non-emissive intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process, which is significantly enhanced in polar media. The effectiveness of the fluorescence quenching and also the prevailing charge transfer mechanism (from the spacer itself or between the BODIPY units) rely directly on the electron-releasing ability of the spacer. Moreover, the linker moiety can also promote intramolecular excitonic interactions, leading to excimer-like emission characterized by new spectral bands and the lengthening of lifetimes. The substantial influence of the bridging moiety on the emission behavior of these BODIPY dyads and their solvent-sensitivity highlight the intricate molecular dynamics upon excitation in multichromophoric systems. In this regard, the present work represents a breakthrough in the complex relationship between the molecular structure of the chromophores and their photophysical signatures, thus providing key guidelines for rationalizing the design of tailored bis-BODIPYs with potential advanced applications. We gratefully acknowledge the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO) (MAT2017-83856-C3-1-P and 3-P; CTQ2015-66702-R), Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO), and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) (CTQ2015-66702-R, MINECO/FEDER, UE), Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades (MCIU), Agencia Estatal de Investigacion (AEI), Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) (RTI2018-094862-B-I00, MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE), and Gobierno Vasco (project IT91216) for financial support. Antimycobacterial effect of selenium nanoparticles on Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death from a single infection agent worldwide. In recent years, the occurrence of tuberculosis cases caused by drug-resistant strains has spread, and is expected to continue to grow. Therefore, the development of new alternative treatments to the use of antibiotics is highly important. In that sense, nanotechnology can play a very relevant role, due to the unique characteristics of nanoparticles. In fact, different types of nanoparticles have already been evaluated both as potential bactericides and as efficient drug delivery vehicles. In this work, the use of selenium nanoparticles has been evaluated to inhibit the growth of two types of mycobacteria: Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The results showed that selenium nanoparticles are able to inhibit the growth of both types of mycobacteria by damaging their cell envelope integrity. These results open a new opportunity for the use of this type of nanoparticles as antimycobacterial agents by themselves, or for the development of novel nanosystems that combine the action of these nanoparticles with other drugs

Synthetic RGB photometry of bright stars: definition of the standard photometric system and UCM library of spectrophotometric spectra

    Get PDF
Although the use of RGB photometry has exploded in the last decades due to the advent of high-quality and inexpensive digital cameras equipped with Bayer-like color filter systems, there is surprisingly no catalogue of bright stars that can be used for calibration purposes. Since due to their excessive brightness, accurate enough spectrophotometric measurements of bright stars typically cannot be performed with modern large telescopes, we have employed historical 13-color medium-narrow-band photometric data, gathered with quite reliable photomultipliers, to fit the spectrum of 1346 bright stars using stellar atmosphere models. This not only constitutes a useful compilation of bright spectrophotometric standards well spread in the celestial sphere, the UCM library of spectrophotometric spectra, but allows the generation of a catalogue of reference RGB magnitudes, with typical random uncertainties 0.01\sim 0.01 mag. For that purpose, we have defined a new set of spectral sensitivity curves, computed as the median of 28 sets of empirical sensitivity curves from the literature, that can be used to establish a standard RGB photometric system. Conversions between RGB magnitudes computed with any of these sets of empirical RGB curves and those determined with the new standard photometric system are provided. Even though particular RGB measurements from single cameras are not expected to provide extremely accurate photometric data, the repeatability and multiplicity of observations will allow access to a large amount of exploitable data in many astronomical fields, such as the detailed monitoring of light pollution and its impact on the night sky brightness, or the study of meteors, solar system bodies, variable stars, and transient objects. In addition, the RGB magnitudes presented here make the sky an accessible and free laboratory for the calibration of the cameras themselves.Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables. Producción CientíficaThis paper aims at evaluating a novel multi-class methodology to establish Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) severity by the use of single-channel at-home oximetry recordings. The study involved 320 participants derived to a specialized sleep unit due to SAHS suspicion. These were assigned to one out of the four SAHS severity degrees according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI): no-SAHS (AHI<5 events/hour), mild-SAHS (5≤AHI<15 e/h), moderate-SAHS (15≤AHI<30 e/h), and severe-SAHS (AHI≥30 e/h). A set of statistical, spectral, and non-linear features were extracted from blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) signals to characterize SAHS. Then, an optimum set among these features were automatically selected based on relevancy and redundancy analyses. Finally, a multi-class AdaBoost model, built with the optimum set of features, was obtained from a training set (60%) and evaluated in an independent test set (40%). Our AdaBoost model reached 0.386 Cohen’s kappa in the four-class classification task. Additionally, it reached accuracies of 89.8%, 85.8%, and 74.8% when evaluating the AHI thresholds 5 e/h, 15 e/h, and 30 e/h, respectively, outperforming the classic oxygen desaturation index. Our results suggest that SpO2 obtained at home, along with multi-class AdaBoost, are useful to detect SAHS severity.Junta de Castilla y León (project VA059U13)Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery Spanish Society (265/2012

Automated Analysis of Unattended Portable Oximetry by means of Bayesian Neural Networks to Assist in the Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaSleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is a chronic sleep-related breathing disorder, which is currently considered a major health problem. In-lab nocturnal polysomnography (NPSG) is the gold standard diagnostic technique though it is complex and relatively unavailable. On the other hand, the analysis of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) from nocturnal pulse oximetry (NPO) is a simple, noninvasive, highly available and effective alternative. This study focused on the design and assessment of a neural network (NN) aimed at detecting SAHS using information from at-home unsupervised portable SpO2 recordings. A Bayesian multilayer perceptron NN (MLP-NN) was proposed, fed with complementary oximetric features properly selected. A dataset composed of 320 unattended SpO2 recordings was analyzed (60% for training and 40% for validation). The proposed Bayesian MLP-NN achieved 94.2% sensitivity, 69.6% specificity, and 89.8% accuracy in the test set. Our results suggest that automated analysis of at-home portable NPO recordings by means of Bayesian MLP-NN could be an effective and highly available technique in the context of SAHS diagnosis.Junta de Castilla y León (project VA059U13)Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery Spanish Society (265/2012
