    Colposuspensión para prevenir la incontinencia urinaria en perras castradas

    Uno de los efectos secundarios de la ovariohisterectomía es la incontinencia urinaria. Ésta se presenta por dos motivos: en primer lugar, al eliminar los ovarios reducimos la fuente de estrógenos que son necesarios para favorecer la contracción muscular del esfínter urinario y, en segundo lugar, al eliminar el útero favorecemos que la vejiga, que se encuentra en posición pélvica, pase a posición abdominal. Cuando este animal envejece y engorda por efecto secundario de la ovariohisterectomía, todas las vísceras abdominales se apoyan sobre la vejiga y la comprimen. Esto, unido a una debilidad del esfínter vesical por la falta de los estrógenos, desemboca en que este animal se vuelva incontinente, primero cuando duerme y después a cualquier hora. El tratamiento médico de esta complicación tiene efectos secundarios muy graves; y en cuanto al quirúrgico, cuando se presenta el problema es difícil por la gran cantidad de grasa que tienen estos animales. Por este motivo, proponemos una técnica quirúrgica sencilla que los autores realizamos siempre al mismo tiempo que la ovariohisterectomía y que no prolonga más de cinco minutos la técnica completa, evitando así los problemas de incontinencia en hembras castradas

    El mecanismo de transmisión de la política monetaria en la economía española y en el conjunto de la UEM

    Este trabajo presenta un resumen de la evidencia empírica disponible sobre la transmisión monetaria en la Unión Económica y Monetaria (UEM). Los resultados revelan un efecto muy lento, pero duradero, sobre los precios y un efecto rápido, pero transitorio, sobre el PIB. Destacan los efectos a través del canal de tipo de cambio y del coste de uso del capital sobre la inversión. Estos efectos difieren de los obtenidos en EE UU, donde la política monetaria incide más sobre el consumo y el efecto riqueza juega un papel más importante. La existencia de asimetrías en la transmisión de los efectos en los países de la UEM es un hecho constatado, que en España alcanza notoriedad debido a la mayor rigidez de sus mercados de bienes y [email protected]

    Using Location-Allocation Algorithms to Distribute Multioutlet Hydrants in Irrigation Networks Design

    Location-allocation algorithms allow for situating services in an efficient way in zones where the demand is dispersed across the area. In the present work, the minisum location-allocation algorithm is used to optimize the placement multioutlet hydrants, which are needed to supply irrigation to the region. The objective function aims to minimize the total access costs of the service. Because the total number of hydrants is the same as what currently exists the results can be compared with the presented solution. The proposed model reduces the total distance run to access the service, from 16,177 m to 13,560 m (16.17%), and the objective function (proportional to the cost) by 28.95%. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.González Villa, FJ.; García Prats, A.     Artritis séptica de hombro: caso clínico en varón joven

    La artritis séptica de hombro en adultos es poco frecuente, representando aproximadamente un 3% de todas las artritis sépticas. Con frecuencia se diagnostica tardíamente con lo que se compromete el resultado final. Se presenta el caso de un varón de 15 años de edad que acudió a urgencias hospitalarias por dolor intenso e impotencia funcional del hombro izquierdo, tumefacción y aumento de la temperatura local. Como antecedente refería haber realizado un esfuerzo físico unos días antes. Pese a la inespecificidad de los resultados de las pruebas realizadas en urgencias, clínicamente se sospechó una artritis séptica de hombro, confirmándose el diagnóstico mediante RM y punción, y realizándose tratamiento antibiótico precoz y limpieza artroscópica. El paciente evolucionó satisfactoriamente con recuperación completa. A propósito del mismo revisamos las claves para el diagnóstico y tratamiento actuales de esta patología.Septic arthritis of the shoulder in adults is an unusual disease (only 3 % of all septic arthritis). Diagnosis is usually made too late, thus interfering in the last result. We report a clinical case in a fifteen years old man who went to the emergency room relating a great pain and difficult movement in his left shoulder, which was swelling and warm. He had made an effort some days before. The initial studies results in the emergency room were normal but clinically we suspected a septic arthritis of the glenohumeral joint. This diagnosis was ratified with RM and punture of the joint. We carried out a treatment consisting of early antibiotic therapy and arthroscopic cleaning. The patient goes on satisfactorily with complete recovery. Thereafter we review the present diagnosis and treatment of this entity

    External sustainability in Spanish economy:Bubbles and crises, 1970–2020

    We address the issue of the sustainability Spain’s exter-nal debt, using data for the period 1970–2020. To detect episodes of potentially explosive behavior of the Spanish net foreign assets over GDP ratio and the current account balance over GDP ratio, as well as episodes of external adjustments over this long period, we employ a recursive unit root test approach. Our empirical analysis leads us to conclude that there is some evidence of bubbles in the ratio between Spanish net foreign assets and the GDP. In contrast, the evidence that the ratio between the Spanish current account balance and the GDP had explosive subperiods is very weak. The episode of explosive behavior identified in the position of net foreign assets during the period 2002–2015 was the result of the country’s economic expansion 1995–2007. The results also show an external adjustment during the period 2008–2019 after the start of a cyclical economic recession

    Hamular bursitis as a cause of orofacial pain. A case report

    Pterygoid hamular bursitis is an infrequent cause of orofacial pain due to a hypertrophic pterygoid hamulus. The pain is often referred to the pharynx, temporomandibular region and facial zone, and requires a differential diagnosis with other craniofacial entities. This paper describes a patient with pterygoid hamular bursitis that presented pain of neuropathic characteristics in the left retromolar region, associated with odynophagia and temporomandibular joint disorders. Based on the clinical and radiological findings, a surgical resection of the pterygoid hamulus was decided. After the surgical procedure the patient still reported symptoms so additional specific treatments such as peripheral nerve block and infiltration were performed. Four months later, the patient developed a squamous cell carcinoma on the left margin of the tongue, which was surgically treated. At present (thirty months follow-up), the patient has no pain or signs of tumor relapse

    Methodology to improve water and energy use by proper irrigationscheduling in pressurised networks

    With the aim of reducing energy consumption and improving water use in pressurised irrigation systems, the methodology to minimise energy consumption by grouping intakes of pressurised irrigation networks into sectors, as developed by Jimenez Bello et al. (2010a), was modified to enable irrigation intakes to operate during the scheduled period for each intake instead of operating during restricted irrigation periods of the same length. Moreover, a method was developed to detect the maximum number of intakes that can operate without extra energy if the source has sufficient head to feed at least some of the intakes. These methods were applied to a Mediterranean irrigation system, where the total cropped area was mainly citrus orchards. In this case study, water was allocated to two groups of intakes, one fed by gravity and the other by pumps. A saving of 36.3 % was achieved by increasing the total volume supplied by gravity, decreasing the injection pump head, and improving the pump performance. Therefore, all the intakes only operated during the irrigation periods at the minimum required pressure.This research was supported by funds from Climate-KIC AGADAPT and from EU 7th Framework Programme FIGARO projects.     Rainfall partitioning after thinning in two low-biomass semiarid forests: Impact of meteorological variables and forest structure on the effectiveness of water-oriented treatments

    [EN] Water-oriented forest management is an urgent need in semiarid catchments. In the case of low-biomass forests and shrublands, the magnitude, efficiency and temporal duration of thinning effects on rainfall partitioning needs further attention. This work studies the effects of juvenile thinning and shrub clearing on stemflow (Stf), throughfall (Thr) and interception (It) in two low-biomass forests (CAL: post-fire Aleppo pine saplings with 74% of basal area, BA, removed; and HU: evergreen oak coppice with 41% of BA removed), as well as the relative contribution of the event meteorology. The effects are compared with a control plot during the first 3¿4¿years. Stf rate (%) decreased with density and, on a tree scale, it was enhanced by the treatment only in the bigger oaks. Event Thr increased from 55 to 81% and from 68 to 86% of gross rainfall (Pg) for CAL and HU respectively after thinning, resulting in about 15% less intercepted Pg. High evaporative conditions and an open (ventilated) forest structure led to high It rates in the controls when comparing with other studies, thus making the treatments more efficient in net precipitation (Pn) gain (Pg intercepted decreased 17% or 2.3% per unit of LAI or BA removed respectively). In general, depths (mm) were mostly explained (>75%) by the rainfall characteristics of the event (e.g. amount, duration, intensity), with a limited contribution from forest structure (e.g. cover, LAI) and event meteorology (e.g. temperature, wind speed, vapor pressure deficit). On the contrary, when expressed as rates (% of Pg), forest structure and event-meteorology gained importance (explaining 25¿65%), especially in the drier site (CAL). In this site, the low gain in Pn (~25¿mm per year on average) was offset with no temporal dampening during the span of this study, as observed in the wetter site (HU), where plant growth tended to mitigate the effect of the treatment by the end of the study.     Versatile Graphene-Based Platform for Robust Nanobiohybrid Interfaces

    Technologically useful and robust graphene-based interfaces for devices require the introduction of highly selective, stable, and covalently bonded functionalities on the graphene surface, whilst essentially retaining the electronic properties of the pristine layer. This work demonstrates that highly controlled, ultrahigh vacuum covalent chemical functionalization of graphene sheets with a thiol-terminated molecule provides a robust and tunable platform for the development of hybrid nanostructures in different environments. We employ this facile strategy to covalently couple two representative systems of broad interest: metal nanoparticles, via S-metal bonds, and thiol-modified DNA aptamers, via disulfide bridges. Both systems, which have been characterized by a multi-technique approach, remain firmly anchored to the graphene surface even after several washing cycles. Atomic force microscopy images demonstrate that the conjugated aptamer retains the functionality required to recognize a target protein. This methodology opens a new route to the integration of high-quality graphene layers into diverse technological platforms, including plasmonics, optoelectronics, or biosensing.     Optimizing CIGB-300 intralesional delivery in locally advanced cervical cancer

    Background:We conducted a phase 1 trial in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer by injecting 0.5 ml of the CK2-antagonist CIGB-300 in two different sites on tumours to assess tumour uptake, safety, pharmacodynamic activity and identify the recommended dose.Methods:Fourteen patients were treated with intralesional injections containing 35 or 70 mg of CIGB-300 in three alternate cycles of three consecutive days each before standard chemoradiotherapy. Tumour uptake was determined using 99 Tc-radiolabelled peptide. In situ B23/nucleophosmin was determined by immunohistochemistry.Results:Maximum tumour uptake for CIGB-300 70-mg dose was significantly higher than the one observed for 35 mg: 16.1±8.9 vs 31.3±12.9 mg (P=0.01). Both, AUC 24h and biological half-life were also significantly higher using 70 mg of CIGB-300 (P<0.001). Unincorporated CIGB-300 diffused rapidly to blood and was mainly distributed towards kidneys, and marginally in liver, lungs, heart and spleen. There was no DLT and moderate allergic-like reactions were the most common systemic side effect with strong correlation between unincorporated CIGB-300 and histamine levels in blood. CIGB-300, 70 mg, downregulated B23/nucleophosmin (P=0.03) in tumour specimens.Conclusion:Intralesional injections of 70 mg CIGB-300 in two sites (0.5 ml per injection) and this treatment plan are recommended to be evaluated in phase 2 studies.Fil: Sarduy, M.
