    Get PDF
A quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using SYBR green detection system has been developed for detection of fishmeal in feedstuffs. The real-time PCR method combines the use of fish-specific primers that amplify a 87 bp fragment of the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene from fish species, and universal primers that amplify a 99 bp fragment of the nuclear 18S ribosomal RNA gene from eukaryotic DNA. The PCR method developed was applied to fish tissues/oats binary mixtures demonstrating its suitability for the detection of fish DNA in mixtures containing as low as 0.1% of fish tissues.

Vectorization of ultrasound-responsive nanoparticles in placental mesenchymal stem cells for cancer therapy

    Get PDF
A new platform constituted by engineered responsive nanoparticles transported by human mesenchymal stem cells is here presented as a proof of concept. Ultrasound-responsive mesoporous silica nanoparticles are coated with polyethylenimine to favor their effective uptake by decidua-derived mesenchymal stem cells. The responsive-release ability of the designed nanoparticles is confirmed, both in vial and in vivo. In addition, this capability is maintained inside the cells used as carriers. The migration capacity of the nanoparticle-cell platform towards mammary tumors is assessed in vitro. The efficacy of this platform for anticancer therapy is shown against mammary tumor cells by inducing the release of doxorubicin only when the cell vehicles are exposed to ultrasound

Zika virus epidemiology: From Uganda to world pandemic, an update

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is an emergent worldwide public health problem. Historically, 84 countries have reported vector-borne ZIKV transmission, 61 of which report on-going transmission. It is a Flavivirus transmitted through arthropods belonging to the Aedes genus. Since 2015, ZIKV infections have increased dramatically; with 1.3 million people infected during 2015 in Brazil alone. This paper's objective is to highlight the conjectural epidemiological points of the virus' dissemination. The digital archives Pubmed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane were searched for papers that assessed aspects of ZIKV transmission and epidemiology. The first isolation occurred in Uganda in 1947. Since then, important outbreaks were documented globally. Consequently, an emergent public health problem arose from a rapidly increasing incidence and its association with the development of neurological diseases such as microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Key factors in the successful containment of outbreaks include surveillance of mosquitos in the neighbourhood, an early mosquito control treatment, an assertive information campaign, and the involvement of the local population and healthcare workers. As such, while ZIKV seems to be spreading globally in a similar manner to other arboviruses, such as Dengue and Chikungunya viruses, it can also be rapidly contained due to the pre-existing availability of necessary resources and regulatory tools as control measures. This review aims to provide a description of those characteristics of ZIKV infection that may be useful in the construction of effective outbreak control strategies. On the Practical Limitations for the Generation of Gunn Oscillations in Highly Doped GaN Diodes

    Get PDF
Planar Gunn diodes based on doped GaN active layers with different geometries have been fabricated and characterized. Gunn oscillations have not been observed due to the catastrophic breakdown of the diodes for applied voltages around 20-25 V, much below the bias theoretically needed for the onset of Gunn oscillations. The breakdown of the diodes has been analyzed by pulsed I-V measurements at low temperature, and it has been observed to be almost independent of the geometry of the channels, thus allowing to discard self-heating effects as the origin of the device burning. The other possible mechanism for the device failure is impact-ionization avalanche due to the high electric fields present at the anode corner of the isolating trenches. However, Monte Carlo simulations using the typical value of the intervalley energy separation of GaN, ε_(1-2)=2.2 eV, show that impact ionization mechanisms are not significant for the voltages for which the experimental failure is observed. But recent experiments showed that ε_(1-2) is lower, around 0.9 eV. This lower intervalley separation leads to a much lower threshold voltage for the Gunn oscillations, not far from the experimental breakdown. Therefore, we attribute the devices failure to an avalanche process just when Gunn domains start to form, since they increase the population of electrons at the high electric field region, thus strongly enhancing impact ionization mechanisms which lead to the diode failure

Linezolid for infective endocarditis. A structured approach based on a national database experience

    Get PDF
Current data on the frequency and efficacy of linezolid (LNZ) in infective endocarditis (IE) are based on small retrospective series. We used a national database to evaluate the effectiveness of LNZ in IE. This is a retrospective study of IE patients in the Spanish GAMES database who received LNZ. We defined 3 levels of therapeutic impact: LNZ 50% of the total treatment, and > 50% of the LNZ doses prescribed in the first weeks of treatment), and LNZ ? 7 days not fulfilling the high-impact criteria (LNZ-NHI). Effectiveness of LNZ was assessed using propensity score matching and multivariate analysis of high-impact cases in comparison to patients not treated with LNZ from the GAMES database matched for age-adjusted comorbidity Charlson index, heart failure, renal failure, prosthetic and intracardiac IE device, left-sided IE, and Staphylococcus aureus. Primary outcomes were in-hospital mortality and one-year mortality. Secondary outcomes included IE complications and relapses

X-ray diffraction, cements and environment, three worlds in one

This keynote lecture will be focused on the strategies for reducing CO2 emissions in the cement production. Concretely, the production of ecocements with optimised formulations that yield reductions in CO2 emissions of up to 25%, when compared to OPC production. Phase assemblage has to be carefully optimised to be competitive and these new ecocements should develop compressive strengths of at least 50 MPa at 28 days of hydration. Optimised compositions of several ecocements will be discussed, but all of them are ye'elimite or calcium sulphoaluminate containing ones: belite-ye'elimite-ferrite (BYF), belite-alite-ye'elimite (BAY) and ye'elimite rich ones (CSA). The clinkering temperature of BYF and BAY has to be established to obtain the targeted phase assemblages. Moreover, the stabilisation of alpha-forms of belite is needed to develop high mechanical strengths at early ages. The benefits of the use of waste materials (such as fly ash or slag) as additions to ecocements are three-fold: lower CO2 emissions due to clinker replacement; valorisation of “useless” products that need a lot of landscape and the consequent efficient consumption of raw materials; and to enhance mechanical properties of the corresponding mortars. The design of appropriate CSA, BYF and BAY mortars, with the final aim of knowing and controlling the hydration mechanisms, will be presented. Particularly, the role of i) type and amount of set regulator (gypsum, anhydrite, etc.), ii) water/cement ratio (w/c); iii) superplasticiser; and iv) pozzolanic additions will be discussed. The role of these parameters in the microstructure and hydraulic behaviour has been investigated through traditional techniques as well as advanced synchrotron characterisation. The formers include laboratory/synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction combined with Rietveld methodology (to obtain phase assemblage), electron microscopy techniques for paste microstructure determination, rheological studies (to control the effect of the different additives, w/c ratio and setting time retarders) and mechanical tests (setting times, compressive strengths and dimensional stability). The latters comprise a group of techniques available at synchrotrons such as: i) high temperature x-ray diffraction for clinkering studies and ii) total scattering data to be analysed by pair distribution function, PDF.Universidad de Málaga.
