Betalains and phenolic compounds of leaves and stems of Alternanthera brasiliana and Alternanthera tenella
Betacyanins and phenolic compounds from acetonitrile:acidified water extracts of Alternanthera brasiliana and Alternanthera tenella were characterized and quantified using a high-performance liquid chromatography system coupled with diode array and electrospray mass spectrometry detection. Four betacyanins (amaranthine, isoamaranthine, betanin and isobetanin) were tentatively identified and quantified. Twenty eight phenolic compounds of four different families (hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids, flavones and flavonols) were separated and characterized on the basis of their accurate MS and MS/MS information out of which ten compounds were confirmed by authentic standards. These plant species could be considered as an especially rich source of natural bioactive compounds and potential food colorants. A. brasiliana showed the highest betacyanin and polyphenols content (89 μg/g and 35,243 μg/g, respectively). Among polyphenols, flavonols were the more abundant (kaempferol-glucoside, kaempferol-rutinoside and kaempferol-rhamnosyl-rhamnosyl-glycoside). Meanwhile, A. tenella showed a different polyphenols profile with flavones as major compounds (glucopyranosil-vitexin and vitexin). As a novelty, pentosyl-vitexin and pentosyl-isovitexin were detected for the first time in Alternanthera plants. Both A. brasiliana and A. tenella leaves showed high total polyphenol content and in vitro antioxidant activity (FRAP). These results provide an analytical base concerning the phenolic and betalains composition and the antioxidant properties of two members of the promising Alternanthera gender, for subsequent applications, such as functional food ingredients.Fil: Deladino, Lorena. Processing and bread-making quality profile of Spanish spelt wheat
Spelt wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ssp. spelta Thell.) is an ancient wheat that has been widely cultivated for hundreds of years. Recently, this species has been neglected in most of Europe; however, the desire for more natural and traditional foods has driven a revival of the crop. In the current study, eighty-eight traditional spelt genotypes from Spain, together with nine common wheat cultivars and one modern spelt (cv. Anna Maria) were grown during a period of two years in Andalucia (southern Spain). In each, several traits were measured in to evaluate their milling, processing, and end-use quality (bread-making). The comparison between species suggested that, in general, spelt and common wheat showed differences for most of the measured traits; on average, spelt genotypes had softer grains, higher protein content (14.3 vs. 11.9%) and gluten extensibility (alveograph P/L 0.5 vs. 1.8), and lower gluten strength (alveograph W 187 vs. 438 × 10−4 J). In the baking test, both species showed similar values. Nevertheless, the analysis of this set of spelt genotypes showed a wide range for all measured traits, with higher values than common wheat in some spelt genotypes for some traits. This opens up the possibility of using these materials in future breeding programs, to develop either new spelt or common wheat cultivars
Decoherence time in self-induced decoherence
A general method for obtaining the decoherence time in self-induced
decoherence is presented. In particular, it is shown that such a time can be
computed from the poles of the resolvent or of the initial conditions in the
complex extension of the Hamiltonian's spectrum. Several decoherence times are
estimated: for microscopic systems, and
for macroscopic bodies. For the particular case of a
thermal bath, our results agree with those obtained by the einselection
(environment-induced decoherence) approach.Comment: 11 page
A microscopic model for a class of mixed-spin quantum antiferromagnets
We propose a microscopic model that describes the magnetic behavior of the
mixed-spin quantum systems RBaNiO (R= magnetic rare earth). An
evaluation of the properties of this model by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations
shows remarkable good agreement with the experimental data and provides new
insight into the physics of mixed-spin quantum magnets.Comment: revised version to be published in Phys. Rev.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In the last few years, it has been described inborn errors of neurotransmitter and pterin metabolism and defects in folate and glucose transport across blood brain barrier. All these defects are classified as rare diseases and needs cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample analysis for diagnosis. Our aim was to evaluate the results of the application of a CSF analysis protocol in a pediatric population from Spain and Portugal presenting with neurological disorders of unknown origin.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We studied CSF samples from and 283 patients with neurological disorders of unknown origin and 127 controls. Neurotransmitters were analysed by HPLC with electrochemical detection, and pterins and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate were determined by HPLC with fluorescence detection.
RESULTS: We diagnosed 3 patients with tyrosine hidroxylase deficiency, 2 with dopa responsive dystonia, 14 with GTP-ciclohydrolase deficiency, 2 with glucose transport deficiency and 43 with cerebral folate deficiency.
CONCLUSIONS: This study allowed us to diagnose new patients, and more importantly, the establishment in all of them of a pharmacological or nutritional treatment. The most frequent defect found was CSF 5-methyltetrahydrofolate deficiency, which was present in different groups of patients.

Influence of the LPM effect and dielectric suppression on particle air showers
An analysis of the influence of the Landau-Migdal-Pomeranchuk (LPM) effect on
the development of air showers initiated by astroparticles is presented. The
theory of Migdal is studied and compared with other theoretical methods,
particularly the Blankenbecler and Drell approach. By means of realistic
computer simulations and using algorithms that emulate Migdal's theory,
including also the so-called dielectric suppression, we study the behavior of
the relevant observables in the case of ultra-high energy primaries. We find
that the LPM effect can significantly modify the development of high energy

Analysis and modeling of high temporal resolution spectroscopic observations of flares on AD Leo
We report the results of a high temporal resolution spectroscopic monitoring
of the flare star AD Leo. During 4 nights, more than 600 spectra were taken in
the optical range using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the Intermediate
Dispersion Spectrograph (IDS). We have observed a large number of short and
weak flares occurring very frequently (flare activity > 0.71 hours-1). This is
in favour of the very important role that flares can play in stellar coronal
heating. The detected flares are non white-light flares and, though most of
solar flares belong to this kind, very few such events had been previously
observed on stars. The behaviour of different chromospheric lines (Balmer
series from H_alpha to H_11, Ca II H & K, Na I D_1 & D_2, He I 4026 AA and He I
D_3) has been studied in detail for a total of 14 flares. We have also
estimated the physical parameters of the flaring plasma by using a procedure
which assumes a simplified slab model of flares. All the obtained physical
parameters are consistent with previously derived values for stellar flares,
and the areas - less than 2.3% of the stellar surface - are comparable with the
size inferred for other solar and stellar flares. Finally, we have studied the
relationships between the physical parameters and the area, duration, maximum

HDE 245059: A Weak-Lined T Tauri Binary Revealed by Chandra and Keck
We present the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS)
and Keck observations of HDE 245059, a young weak-lined T Tauri star (WTTS),
member of the pre-main sequence group in the Lambda Orionis Cluster. Our high
spatial resolution, near-infrared observations with Keck reveal that HDE 245059
a binary separated by 0.87". Based on this new information we have obtained an
estimate of the masses of the binary components; 3M_{sun} and 2.5M_{sun} for
the north and south components, respectively. We have estimated the age of the
system to be ~2-3 Myr. We detect both components of the binary in the zeroth
order Chandra image and in the grating spectra. Our fits to the spectrum of the
binary have shown that the emission is dominated by a plasma between 8 and 15
MK, a soft component at 4 MK and a hard component at 50 MK are also detected.
The value of the hydrogen column density was low, 8 x 10^{19} cm^{-2}, likely
due to the clearing of the inner region of the Lambda Orionis cloud. The
abundance pattern shows an inverse First Ionization Potential (FIP) effect for
all elements from O to Fe, the only exception being Ca. A 3-T model was fitted
to the individual zeroth order spectra using the abundances derived for the
binary. We have also obtained several lines fluxes from the grating spectra.
The fits to the triplets show no evidence of high densities. We conclude that
the X-ray properties of the weak-lined T Tau binary HDE 245059 are similar to
those generally observed in other weak-lined T Tau stars. Although its
accretion history may have been affected by the clearing of the interstellar
material around Lambda Ori, its coronal properties appears not to have been
