Promoting the Introduction of Lifelong Learning Related Concepts in the Description of Information Resources Using Metadata Technology

    Get PDF
The rise of Internet has created an urgent need to define widely agreed-upon methods and vocabularies for describing its contents in a consistent and orderly manner. This necessip can be satisfied by means of the use of Metadata Schemas. In achieving this aim in relation to the Educational, Vocational and Training sector, several initiatives have emerged at an international level, but there is a need for integrating core skills and competencies issues, which are very important in relation to the new paradigm of Lifelong Learning (LLL) and especially regarding with informal education and training, into the metadata solutions that are arisen in the framework of those initiatives

Informed and shared decision making require that people understand health risks. Unfortunately, many people are not risk literate and are biased by common risk communication practices. In this talk, we review a collection of studies investigating the benefits of visual aids for communicating health risks to diverse vulnerable individuals (e.g., varying in abilities, ages, risk characteristics, and cultural backgrounds). Studies show that appropriately designed visual aids are often highly effective, transparent, and ethically desirable tools for improving decision making, changing attitudes, and reducing risky behavior. Theoretical mechanisms, open questions, and emerging applications are discussedUniversidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

The artistic use of parallax and lenses revealing the invisible in holography

    Get PDF
There are many artistic resources offered by holography: third-dimension registration and reconstruction, immateriality, color interpretation, holographic space, realism, etc. But there are a few of them which are very characteristic and singular of that media such as the inversion of parallax, and the possibility of making invisible to turn into visible. Current paper aims to discuss key issues concerning with the aesthetic use of those special features. It is based on theoretical as well as critical analysis of the production by some of the most outstanding holographic artists who have made use of such interesting resources

Ponencia de 7th International Conference on Intercultural Education “Education, Health and ICT for a Transcultural World”, EDUHEM 2016, AlmeriaPartial results of the Project R&D, Career Design and entrepreneurial talent management, of national dimension, funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in the call for Excellence 2013 State Plan 2013 - 2016 with reference: EDU2013 - 45704 - P. Specifically we focus on (subject) describe and analyze the situation of Andalusian women confronting the entrepreneurship, their motivations and the factors that influence these processes and, all including a gender perspective. The objectives refer to: 1) Describing the situation of Andalusian women in entrepreneurship ; 2) Understanding and explain the motivations and decisions that drive them to take; 3) Identifying and describing the ( positive and negative) conditions that perceive women against undertaking; 4) Understanding from a gender analysis the positions of women on entrepreneurship related to their life projects. A descriptive and qualitative methodology is combined, collecting info rmation through various techniques such as social indicators, observational documentary sources and procedures, as well as interviews and life stories. Results and Conclusions. The findings so far point to an unequal situation regarding entrepreneurship. Relevant results are also obtained as to the incentives and decisions that drive to undertake, either obligation, because of the limited supply and possibilities of market access to paid employment , or vocation, leading us to question what barriers - internal - external and more or less subtle ones operating in these processes. On this issue we find factors that result in inequalities, such as maternity (number of children) and family and dependency (care) all for the economic and employment model that still prevails responsibilitie

En col·laboració amb la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), la Universitat de Barcelona (UB) i l’Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO)The purpose of this study is to investigate a new algorithm to perform an automated non-cycloplegic refraction in adults. In order to carry on the study fifty healthy subjects were measured twice (test-retest) with the new automated subjective refraction (ASR) method and with the conventional clinician subjective refraction (CSR) procedure. Objective refraction (OR) is also measured with the autorefractor Grand Seiko WAM-5500. The new subjective refraction procedure is mainly based on the root finding bisection algorithm and on the Euclidean distances among power vectors. The algorithm is implemented on a computer that is synchronized with a custom-made motorized phoropter. Main outcome measures: spherical equivalent (M) and Jackson cross-cylinder (J0 and J45). Repeatability is assessed with the within-subject standard deviation (Sw) and agreement is assessed with the limits of agreement. The results showed that the first implementation of the algorithm is a potential novel method of performing non-cycloplegic subjective refraction in adults without clinician support. Although it presents some limitations that warrant further research and it still should be tested in a wider population in terms of age, refraction and different ocular conditions, this method can contribute to improve the access to primary eye care services in developing countries

An IMS-Learning Design Editor for a Higher Education Blended Learning Scenario

    Get PDF
The IMS-Learning Design has been developed to support the creation of reusable and pedagogically neutral learning scenarios and content. Although it is especially suitable for eLearning, there is a lot of interest on using it in higher education blended learning scenarios. However there are some related key issues which must be managed such as cultural bias and the need for expensive human resources to design and develop specification compliant units of learning. They can be addressed by the design of ad-hoc editors supporting concrete learning design units of learning. We suggest some solutions to overcome these limitations, based on our experience designing the user interface of an IMS-LD compliant editor, GDUS+. We also explain our user centering approach, and give some conclusions about the benefits of using IMS-LD

[EN] Angelman syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by mental retardation, movement or balance dysfunctions, and severe limitations in speech and language. The genetic cause that results in the syndrome is the deletion or mutation of the UBE3A gene located in the chromosomal region 15q11-13. This gene is transcribed to produce an E3 ubiquitin ligase (UBE3A o E6AP) that works by conjugating ubiquitin groups to a single set of proteins. The main objective of this work was to validat PSMD4, the human homolog protein of Rpn10 in Drosophila, as a direct substrate of UBE3A enzyme. To do this, I performed a study in HEK293T cells transfected with several independent plasmids so that they overexpressed three different enzymes: UBE3A, Parkin and BirA. I then performed a GFP-pulldown to purify the substrate under study, separating the samples by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and then proteins were transferred to a PVDF membrane. Finally, the efficiency of the transfection was verified and the levels of ubiquitination were visualized by chemiluminescent antibodies. An increase of ubiquitinated material was observed in both the extract of the cellular material and in the sample of purified substrate in the cells that overexpressed UBE3A. In view of the results, it was concluded that the PSMD4 protein is a substrate of the enzyme UBE3A and two possible hypotheses were proposed to explain the increase of ubiquitination in the extract of the cellular material. The identification of all substrate proteins of UBE3A is the starting point for the study of their functions and the search for mechanisms to substitute their effect in individuals affected by Angelman syndrome

From Obama to Samara: What changes do the Spanish education system and the Roma movement have to make so that one day it will be possible for a Roma woman to be president?

The American civil rights movement was started by an African American woman who was a participant in a popular education centre. This centre played a key role in the social transformations that led us to elect an African American president in the primary great world power. The Spanish education system needs progressive transformations which will contribute to overcoming the segregation and school failure of female Roma children. Roma women, as the driving force behind transformation in their population, are active agents when deciding on the type of schooling they want for the future of their children. Through associations, and hand in hand with the educational theories and practices provided by the international scientific community, in this article we present the transformations which many schools in Spain are carrying out in order to overcome the social exclusion of the Roma population. In this article we provide the foundations to build a movement of female Roma university graduates who, by including the voices of all of the women in their community, continue to be the driving force behind social transformation. In this way one day education and society in this country will have improved to such an extent that it will be possible for a Roma woman to be president. The INCLUD-ED Strategies for inclusion and social cohesion in Europe from education (2006-2011) project is an integrated project from the European Commission’s VI Framework Programme
