Sustainability of an economy from the water‑energy‑food nexus perspective
In this paper we study the usefulness of the water-energy-food nexus in assessing the sustainability
of an economy. All economic activity depends on its surrounding physical environment,
and especially on the interconnection between these three essential resources. As
a result, the nexus is a useful tool for detecting the economic risk of resource scarcity,
optimising investments or resource use, and assessing the effects of economic policies
or shocks such as climate change. The nexus approach is also useful for guiding policies
towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We show
that both the objective of each study and the scale on which it is conducted are factors
worth considering when choosing the most suitable research methodology. We detected
important challenges relating to the heterogeneity of the methods, scales and variables
used, and therefore necessary measures nare suggested in order to homogenise the studies
for their comparability and/or integration, both horizontally and vertically, or over time.PAIDI (Andalusian Plan for Research, Development and Innovation) research groupSEJ-054: SWEEP (Studies on Wellbeing, Environment and Economic Policy
Effectiveness of foot orthosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis related to quality of life and pain. A systematic review and meta-analysis
Foot pain and deformity is almost ubiquitous in RA and results in considerable physical and psychosocial impairment. Epidemiological studies consistently suggest a 90% prevalence of foot pain despite advances in pharmacological therapy.
Mechanical and other non-pharmacological interventions such as orthoses and footwear, have an important role in managing foot
pathology in patients with their systemic disease controlled. The effectiveness of treatment with insoles, especially in early
periods, was studied in a randomized controlled trial, which results suggested an immediate clinical improvement, reducing foot pain,
disability and limited functionality.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
Are you ready for retirement? The influence of values on membership in voluntary organizations in midlife and old age
Membership in voluntary organizations is associated with individual and
social benefits. Due to the negative consequences of the global pandemic
on older people, and the governmental challenges posed by population
aging, voluntary membership is of great importance to society. To
effectively promote volunteering among older people, it is necessary to
understand the determinants of voluntary membership. This study analyses
the influence of individual values—secular/traditional and survival/selfexpression–
on voluntary membership among European adults (N = 31,985).
Specifically, it examines which values orient two age groups (middle age:
50–64 and old age: 65–79), as well as men and women toward a
certain type of association (Social Awareness; Professional and Political;
Education and Leisure; Religion). The sample of 31,985 comprises 60%
of adults aged 50–64 and 40% aged 65–79; of which 56% are women
and 44% men. The empirical estimation considers different levels of data
aggregation: individual, national and welfare system, therefore multilevel
analysis is used as an analytical strategy. Individual-level variables from the
Integrated Values Survey (2005/09, 2010/14, and 2017/20) and nationallevel
variables (Gini Index and Gross Domestic Product Per Capita)
from the World Bank and Eurostat are used. The results indicate that
traditional and self-expression values promote membership in voluntary
organizations in general more than secular and survival values. However,
there are differences according to the type of organization. Furthermore,
values are found to moderate the effect of age and gender on
voluntary membership.Gobierno de Aragon CSO2017-82110-RSpanish Government PRE2018-083981State Research Agency

Generalized sampling in U-invariant subspaces
In this work we carry out some results in sampling theory for U-invariant subspaces of a separable Hilbert space H, also called atomic subspaces. These spaces are a generalization of the well-known shift- invariant subspaces in L2 (R); here the space L2 (R) is replaced by H, and the shift operator by U. Having as data the samples of some related operators, we derive frame expansions allowing the recovery of the elements in Aa. Moreover, we include a frame perturbation-type result whenever the samples are affected with a jitter error
Response of Vulnerable Road Users to Visual Information from Autonomous Vehicles in Shared Spaces
Completely unmanned autonomous vehicles have been anticipated for a while.
Initially, these are expected to drive only under certain conditions on some
roads, and advanced functionality is required to cope with the ever-increasing
challenges of safety. To enhance the public's perception of road safety and
trust in new vehicular technologies, we investigate in this paper the effect of
several interaction paradigms with vulnerable road users by developing and
applying algorithms for the automatic analysis of pedestrian body language. We
assess behavioral patterns and determine the impact of the coexistence of AVs
and other road users on general road safety in a shared space for VRUs and
vehicles. Results showed that the implementation of visual communication cues
for interacting with VRUs is not necessarily required for a shared space in
which informal traffic rules apply.Comment: Published paper in the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems

Duplex stainless steels for thermal energy storage: characterization of oxide scales formed in carbonate salts at 500 °C
Next generation concentrated solar power (CSP) plants promise a higher operating temperature and better efficiency. However, new issues related to the corrosion against protection of the construction alloys need to be solved. In this work, two different duplex stainless steels grades, namely 2205 (DS2205) and 2507 (DS2507), were evaluated for their compatibility with the eutectic molten salt mixture of Li2CO3-K2CO3-Na2CO3 at 500 °C in air for thermal energy storage applications. Corrosion tests combined with complementary microscopy, microanalysis and mechanical techniques were employed to study the oxide scales formed on the surface of the duplex steels. The corrosion tests evidenced that the attack morphology in both duplex steels was a uniform oxidative process without localized corrosion. DS2507 presented a better corrosion resistance than DS2205, due to the formation of thinner, compact and continuous oxide layers with higher compositional content in Cr, Ni and Mo than DS2205. The oxide scales of DS2507 showed more remarkable mechanical integrity and adhesion to the metallic substrate.Postprint (published version
Gender ideology is a very important construct in the psychological study
of gender. Research has shown that gender ideology is related to many behaviours,
believes, and attitudes of men and women, specially with those related to gender
discrimination. Firstly, the construct ‘gender identity’ is defined. Secondly, in this article studies conducted to elaborate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the long and the short versions of the Gender Ideology Scale are revised. Results of these instrumental studies show the following: a) alpha coefficients for both versions range from.70 to .90; b) the general pattern of total scores is biased toward the equalitarian pole of the
scale; and c) convergent and discriminant evidences related to the use of both versions
are consistent with the theory about gender ideology. Finally, future research about the
scale factorial structure and the predictive utility of the construct gender ideology are
suggested.A ideologia de género é um construto de grande relevância na análise psicológica do género, que se tem mostrado relacionado com uma variedade de comportamentos, crenças e atitudes de homens e mulheres, especialmente com aqueles relacionados com a discriminação de género.
