    A survey of the genera Sarcodictyon Forbes, 1847, and rolandia Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900, (anthozoa: octocorallia) in the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean

    Sarcodictyon catenatum Forbes, 1847, is a common species in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. However, often it has been mistaken for Rolandia coralloides Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900. On the basis of British and Mediterranean material we studied the main characters for distinguishing S. catenatum. We consider Rolandia coralloides Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900, to be a valid species and we assign to it all the material named Rolandia rosea by S. Weinberg (1978). Furthermore, a histological study confirmed that R. coralloides typically forms groups of polyps embedded in a common coenenchyme. Therefore, the possibility of transferring R. coralloides from Stolonifera to Alcyonacea is discussed. Evagorgia rosea Philippi, 1842, is here considered to be a nomen dubium

    A new species of Astyanax (Characiformes, Characidae) from Uruguay river basin in Argentina, with remarks on hook presence in Characidae

    In the present paper the new species Astyanax ojiara sp. n. is described, from the headwaters of Yabotí river, an affluent of Uruguay river in the province of Misiones, Argentinean northeast. A combination of characters differentiates the new species from other congeners: one heptacuspid maxillary teeth; teeth of inner premaxillary row gently expanded distally; 7-9 dentary teeth decreasing in size anteroposteriorly; males with hooks in all fins; large males with pelvic axillary scale bearing 1 to 8 hooks; 36-38 perforated scales in lateral line; 20-23 branched anal-fin rays. Number of scales in the lateral line and branched anal-fin rays, humeral spot, and low body of Astyanax ojiara sp. n. resemble those of A. eigenmanniorum, but maxillary, premaxillary and dentary teeth differ in both species. The disposition of the dentary leeth is also similar in A. taeniatus and A. giton but A. ojiara sp. n. has one heptacuspid maxillary tooth.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    A numerical study of planar detonations

    A numerical study on the buildup and propagation of planar detonation waves in H2 + Air combustible mixtures, based on theuse of unsteady Euler equations coupled with source terms to account for rates controlled chemical activity, is presented. The computer solver works with 13 chemical species and 33 different one step reactions of a H2 O2 N2 combustion mechanism. The detonation process is initiated via the energy provided by an igniter which acts as a driver of a shock tube driving through a combustible mixture a blast (or strong shock), accompanied by exothermic chemical changes. It is shown that for each equivalence ratio of the combustible mixture, the detonation can only be triggered if the igniter energy deposition equals or exceeds a computed minimum value. When the igniter energy deposition is less than this minimum, the combustion zone start to decouple from the blast front and if that energy is diminished even more, the combustion could nottake place.     Generation of high-confinement step-like optical waveguides in LiNbO3 by swift heavy ion-beam irradiation

    3 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.We demonstrate a swift ion-beam irradiation procedure based on electronic (not nuclear) excitation to generate a large index jump step-like optical waveguide (Δn0 ≈ 0.2, Δne ≈ 0.1) in LiNbO3. The method uses medium-mass ions with a kinetic energy high enough to assure that their electronic stopping power Se(z) reaches a maximum value close to the amorphous (latent) track threshold inside the crystal. Fluorine ions of 20 and 22 MeV and fluences in the range (1–30)×1014 are used for this work. A buried amorphous layer having a low refractive index (2.10 at a wavelength of 633 nm) is then generated at a controlled depth in LiNbO3, whose thickness is also tuned by irradiation fluence. The layer left at the surface remains crystalline and constitutes the core of the optical waveguide which, moreover, is several microns far from the end of the ion range. The waveguides show, after annealing at 300 °C, low propagation losses ( ≈ 1 dB/cm) and a high second-harmonic generation coefficient (50%–80% of that for bulk unirradiated LiNbO3, depending on the fluence). The formation and structure of the amorphous layer has been monitored by additional Rutherford backscattering/channeling experiments.We acknowledge the funding of the project MAT2002– 03220 (MEC). A.     Real-Time Context-Aware Microservice Architecture for Predictive Analytics and Smart Decision-Making

    The impressive evolution of the Internet of Things and the great amount of data flowing through the systems provide us with an inspiring scenario for Big Data analytics and advantageous real-time context-aware predictions and smart decision-making. However, this requires a scalable system for constant streaming processing, also provided with the ability of decision-making and action taking based on the performed predictions. This paper aims at proposing a scalable architecture to provide real-time context-aware actions based on predictive streaming processing of data as an evolution of a previously provided event-driven service-oriented architecture which already permitted the context-aware detection and notification of relevant data. For this purpose, we have defined and implemented a microservice-based architecture which provides real-time context-aware actions based on predictive streaming processing of data. As a result, our architecture has been enhanced twofold: on the one hand, the architecture has been supplied with reliable predictions through the use of predictive analytics and complex event processing techniques, which permit the notification of relevant context-aware information ahead of time. On the other, it has been refactored towards a microservice architecture pattern, highly improving its maintenance and evolution.
