    Benefits of host genetic diversity for resistance to infection depend on parasite diversity

    Host populations with high genetic diversity are predicted to have lower levels of infection prevalence. This theory assumes that host genetic diversity results in variation in susceptibility and that parasites exhibit variation in infectivity. Empirical studies on the effects of host heterogeneity typically neglect the role of parasite diversity. We conducted three laboratory experiments designed to test if genetic variation in Daphnia magna populations and genetic variation in its parasites together influence the course of parasite spread after introduction. We found that a natural D. magna population exhibited variation in susceptibility to infection by three parasite species and had strong host clone–parasite species interactions. There was no effect of host heterogeneity in experimental host populations (polycultures and monocultures) separately exposed to single strains of three parasite species. When we manipulated the genetic diversity of a single parasite species and exposed them to host monocultures and polycultures, we found that parasite prevalence increased with the number of parasite strains. Host monocultures exposed to several parasite strains had higher mean parasite prevalence and higher variance than polycultures. These results indicate that effect of host genetic diversity on the spread of infection depends on the level of genetic diversity in the parasite population

    Estimability of time-varying natural mortality in groundfishes: covariates and hierarchical models

    Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2017Natural mortality, M, has historically been a difficult parameter to estimate in conjunction with other stock assessment parameters. Time-varying M, while likely to be experienced by a population, is a particularly difficult process to estimate with the data and methods currently available to most stock assessments. Although auxiliary information in the form of a covariate to M has been shown to improve model fit for some stocks, such data are rarely available. Meanwhile, hierarchical models continue to be utilized in capturing processes that vary in time and space. I tested both the covariate and hierarchical methods in their ability to estimate time-varying M. I attempted to fit hierarchical models by two different methods: penalized likelihood and the integrated likelihood approach associated with mixed effects models. Mixed effects models performed poorly in comparison to penalized likelihood. Including a covariate to natural mortality aided the estimability of time-varying M, regardless of the observation error associated with the covariate. Estimating a constant value of M resulted in biased estimates when M was time-varying in the simulated population. I showed that the Akaike information criterion (AIC) is a useful metric for comparing models although it does not necessarily align with the accuracy of estimates that are of most interest to managers, such as terminal year spawning stock biomass. In addition to showing empirically that incorporating a covariate is a robust approach to estimating time-varying M, I conclude that this approach is also advantageous to stock assessment on theoretical grounds, as it is more amenable than hierarchical models to making predictions

    Hospital fall prevention: a systematic review of implementation, components, adherence, and effectiveness.

    ObjectivesTo systematically document the implementation, components, comparators, adherence, and effectiveness of published fall prevention approaches in U.S. acute care hospitals.DesignSystematic review. Studies were identified through existing reviews, searching five electronic databases, screening reference lists, and contacting topic experts for studies published through August 2011.SettingU.S. acute care hospitals.ParticipantsStudies reporting in-hospital falls for intervention groups and concurrent (e.g., controlled trials) or historic comparators (e.g., before-after studies).InterventionFall prevention interventions.MeasurementsIncidence rate ratios (IRR, ratio of fall rate postintervention or treatment group to the fall rate preintervention or control group) and ratings of study details.ResultsFifty-nine studies met inclusion criteria. Implementation strategies were sparsely documented (17% not at all) and included staff education, establishing committees, seeking leadership support, and occasionally continuous quality improvement techniques. Most interventions (81%) included multiple components (e.g., risk assessments (often not validated), visual risk alerts, patient education, care rounds, bed-exit alarms, and postfall evaluations). Fifty-four percent did not report on fall prevention measures applied in the comparison group, and 39% neither reported fidelity data nor described adherence strategies such as regular audits and feedback to ensure completion of care processes. Only 45% of concurrent and 15% of historic control studies reported sufficient data to compare fall rates. The pooled postintervention incidence rate ratio (IRR) was 0.77 (95% confidence interval = 0.52-1.12, P = .17; eight studies; I(2) : 94%). Meta-regressions showed no systematic association between implementation intensity, intervention complexity, comparator information, or adherence levels and IRR.ConclusionPromising approaches exist, but better reporting of outcomes, implementation, adherence, intervention components, and comparison group information is necessary to establish evidence on how hospitals can successfully prevent falls

    The Iliocapsularis Muscle: An Important Stabilizer in the Dysplastic Hip

    Background: The iliocapsularis muscle is a little known muscle overlying the anterior hip capsule postulated to function as a stabilizer of dysplastic hips. Theoretically, this muscle would be hypertrophied in dysplastic hips and, conversely, atrophied in stable and well-constrained hips. However, these observations have not been confirmed and the true function of this muscle remains unknown. Questions/purposes: We quantified the anatomic dimensions and degree of fatty infiltration of the iliocapsularis muscle and compared the results for 45 hips with deficient acetabular coverage (Group I) with 40 hips with excessive acetabular coverage (Group II). Patients and Methods: We used MR arthrography to evaluate anatomic dimensions (thickness, width, circumference, cross-sectional area [CSA], and partial volume) and the amount of fatty infiltration. Results: We observed increased thickness, width, circumference, CSA, and partial volume of the iliocapsularis muscle in Group I when compared with Group II. Additionally, hips in Group I had a lower prevalence of fatty infiltration compared with those in Group II. The iliocapsularis muscle typically was hypertrophied, and there was less fatty infiltration in dysplastic hips compared with hips with excessive acetabular coverage. Conclusion: These observations suggest the iliocapsularis muscle is important for stabilizing the femoral head in a deficient acetabulum. This muscle serves as an anatomic landmark when performing a periacetabular osteotomy. Additionally, preoperative evaluation of morphologic features of the muscle can be used as an adjunct for decision making when treating patients with borderline hip dysplasia or femoroacetabular impingemen

    Cu-doped GaN grown by molecular beam epitaxy

    Cu-doped GaN is a promising candidate for a nitride-based diluted magnetic semiconductor. Theoretical predictions show the possibility of ferromagnetism and high spinpolarization for certain arrangements of Cu atoms in the GaN lattice. Initial experimental results have already indicated ferromagnetism. However, the influence of structural defects on the ferromagnetic order in Cu-doped nitrides is not clear. Hence, the origin of the ferromagnetism is still under debate. We have used density functional theory (DFT) to verify previous theoretical predictions and to investigate the effects of the position of Cu atoms on the ferromagnetic properties. Our DFT calculations show high degrees of spin-polarization, independent of the arrangement of Cu atoms. Additionally, we have investigated the growth of Cu-doped GaN by molecular beam epitaxy. The influence of parameters, such as Cu to Ga ratio and growth temperature, on the structural and magnetic properties will be discussed

    Boeing 18-Inch Fan Rig Broadband Noise Test

    The purposes of the subject test were to identify and quantify the mechanisms by which fan broadband noise is produced, and to assess the validity of such theoretical models of those mechanisms as may be available. The test was conducted with the Boeing 18-inch fan rig in the Boeing Low-Speed Aeroacoustic Facility (LSAF). The rig was designed to be particularly clean and geometrically simple to facilitate theoretical modeling and to minimize sources of interfering noise. The inlet is cylindrical and is equipped with a boundary layer suction system. The fan is typical of modern high-by-pass ratio designs but is capable of operating with or without fan exit guide vanes (stators), and there is only a single flow stream. Fan loading and tip clearance are adjustable. Instrumentation included measurements of fan performance, the unsteady flow field incident on the fan and stators, and far-field and in-duct acoustic fields. The acoustic results were manipulated to estimate the noise generated by different sources. Significant fan broadband noise was found to come from the rotor self-noise as measured with clean inflow and no boundary layer. The rotor tip clearance affected rotor self-noise somewhat. The interaction of the rotor with inlet boundary layer turbulence is also a significant source, and is strongly affected by rotor tip clearance. High level noise can be generated by a high-order nonuniform rotating at a fraction of the fan speed, at least when tip clearance and loading are both large. Stator-generated noise is the loudest of the significant sources, by a small margin, at least on this rig. Stator noise is significantly affected by propagation through the fan

    Options for early breast cancer follow-up in primary and secondary care : a systematic review

    Background Both incidence of breast cancer and survival have increased in recent years and there is a need to review follow up strategies. This study aims to assess the evidence for benefits of follow-up in different settings for women who have had treatment for early breast cancer. Method A systematic review to identify key criteria for follow up and then address research questions. Key criteria were: 1) Risk of second breast cancer over time - incidence compared to general population. 2) Incidence and method of detection of local recurrence and second ipsi and contra-lateral breast cancer. 3) Level 1–4 evidence of the benefits of hospital or alternative setting follow-up for survival and well-being. Data sources to identify criteria were MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, PSYCHINFO, ZETOC, Health Management Information Consortium, Science Direct. For the systematic review to address research questions searches were performed using MEDLINE (2011). Studies included were population studies using cancer registry data for incidence of new cancers, cohort studies with long term follow up for recurrence and detection of new primaries and RCTs not restricted to special populations for trials of alternative follow up and lifestyle interventions. Results Women who have had breast cancer have an increased risk of a second primary breast cancer for at least 20 years compared to the general population. Mammographically detected local recurrences or those detected by women themselves gave better survival than those detected by clinical examination. Follow up in alternative settings to the specialist clinic is acceptable to women but trials are underpowered for survival. Conclusions Long term support, surveillance mammography and fast access to medical treatment at point of need may be better than hospital based surveillance limited to five years but further large, randomised controlled trials are needed
