    Study on geological and structural characterization around Mai Kenetal, Central Tigray in Northern Ethiopia

    The present research is aims to study geological and structural characterization around Mai Kenetal, central Tigray, in northern Ethiopia. Topographic difference of the Mai Kenetal area helped in identifying the rock units in the north-western and south-eastern parts of the study area. So that metavolcanic, metavolcaniclastic formations are located in the north and northeast sides whereas slate and phyllite are situated in the south, central and eastern side. Also intrusive granite and dikes are recognized in the central part of the study area. The results shows that the basement rocks are prominently NE-SW trending and shows parallel to the regional lineaments of Mai Kenetal is syncline inliers structure. In study area, the dominant structures such as foliation, shear zone, fold, and fractures like fault, joints, and slickenside are appears. Structural data suggests that the study area has been experienced in three phases of deformation and it also indicated presence of hydrothermal alterations like chloritization, epidotization, sericitization. Based on the lithology study and the non-development of foliation or schistosity suggest that the study area is experienced in low grade metamorphic conditions

    Design and Performance Analysis of a Switched Reluctance Motor Using Finite Element Analysis and Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Model

    By being magnet-free, and mechanically robust with a longer constant power range, switched reluctance motor (SRM) is gathering much attention as a potential choice to propel electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). This paper comprehensively investigates the performance sensitivity to geometric design variables such as rotor diameter, pole arc angles, and yoke thicknesses for an SRM using static two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetic Finite-Element Analysis (FEA). The reason for the change in static characteristics due to variation in reluctance between SRM designs has not been detailed previously. This is addressed by the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model that simplifies the design analysis. Results indicate that stator pole reluctance needs to be given due importance while studying the influence of rotor diameter. Also, it is imperative to set an adequate thickness of the stator and rotor yokes to minimize the effect of saturation on the performance. Rotor diameter and stator pole arc angle have a pronounced influence on the performance while the influence of rotor pole arc angle and yoke thicknesses was relatively less

    Active Vibration Control of a Smart Cantilever Beam on General Purpose Operating System

    All mechanical systems suffer from undesirable vibrations during their operations. Their occurrence is uncontrollable as it depends on various factors. However, for efficient operation of the system, these vibrations have to be controlled within the specified limits. Light weight, rapid and multi-mode control of the vibrating structure is possible by the use of piezoelectric sensors and actuators and feedback control algorithms. In this paper, direct output feedback based active vibration control has been implemented on a cantilever beam using Lead Zirconate-Titanate (PZT) sensors and actuators. Three PZT patches were used, one as the sensor, one as the exciter providing the forced vibrations and the third acting as the actuator that provides an equal but opposite phase vibration/force signal to that of sensed so as to damp out the vibrations.     The usual natural fuel energy resources such as petroleum, natural gas, and coal are getting shortage rapidly by fulfilling the high demand of the energy sector in the world. Also, affect the environment and leads to the greenhouse effect and serious pollution problem. Therefore renewable energy sources like solar, wind, tidal etc. are gaining more attention as an alternative energy. The hierarchical structure of the convention power system is experiencing a paradigm shift into a deregulated system. As a result many small generators are been connected to the system at the distribution level. In order to supply a reliable and sustainable power to select customers it becomes mandatory to connect renewable and dispatchable sources. This would result in a hybrid system which can operate in autonomous or non-autonomous mode. This project aims at analysing the performance of one such autonomous system for varying demand. PV and fuel cell sources are considered to form the hybrid system under concern. An overall coordinated controller has been analysed to ensure power sharing among the different sources used in the hybrid system also incorporating variations in the solar irradiations. Also a simulation for generation of pulses for appropriate switching of control between the different sources through MATLAB has been attempted in this work

    Discovery of Novel Biomarker Candidates for Liver Fibrosis in Hepatitis C Patients: A Preliminary Study

    Background: Liver biopsy is the reference standard for assessing liver fibrosis and no reliable non-invasive diagnostic approach is available to discriminate between the intermediate stages of fibrosis. Therefore suitable serological biomarkers of liver fibrosis are urgently needed. We used proteomics to identify novel fibrosis biomarkers in hepatitis C patients with different degrees of liver fibrosis.Methodology/Principal Findings: Proteins in plasma samples from healthy control individuals and patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) induced cirrhosis were analysed using a proteomics technique: two dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). This technique separated the proteins in plasma samples of control and cirrhotic patients and by visualizing the separated proteins we were able to identify proteins which were increasing or decreasing in hepatic cirrhosis. Identified markers were validated across all Ishak fibrosis stages and compared to the markers used in FibroTest, Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, Hepascore and FIBROSpect by Western blotting. Forty four candidate biomarkers for hepatic fibrosis were identified of which 20 were novel biomarkers of liver fibrosis. Western blot validation of all candidate markers using plasma samples from patients across all Ishak fibrosis scores showed that the markers which changed with increasing fibrosis most consistently included lipid transfer inhibitor protein, complement C3d, corticosteroid-binding globulin, apolipoprotein J and apolipoprotein L1. These five novel fibrosis markers which are secreted in blood showed a promising consistent change with increasing fibrosis stage when compared to the markers used for the FibroTest, ELF test, Hepascore and FIBROSpect. These markers will be further validated using a large clinical cohort.Conclusions/Significance: This study identifies 20 novel fibrosis biomarker candidates. The proteins identified may help to assess hepatic fibrosis and eliminate the need for invasive liver biopsies.</br

    Leadership in agricultural machinery circles: experimental evidence from Tajikistan

    Leadership is critical for the viability of rural groups. The way in which leadership is legitimised can mediate leader and group member behaviour in the face of social dilemmas. Yet there has been scant research on leader‐follower dynamics in naturally occurring groups. Highlighting the case of agricultural machinery circles in Tajikistan, the effect of leading by example on investments to a collective good is studied in a framed field experiment. To increase realism, and contrary to standard economic experiments, this investment is a voucher allowing the group to make a real‐world machinery purchase at reduced costs. Two treatments manipulate leaders’ legitimisation. Elected leaders achieve 30 per cent higher contributions to the collective investment against a baseline version without a leader. Contributions remain, on average, relatively stable over the course of the game. The results are discussed with reference to the debate on external intervention in agricultural producer organisations.Peer Reviewe

    Repurposing rapid diagnostic tests to detect falsified vaccines in supply chains

    Substandard (including degraded) and falsified (SF) vaccines are a relatively neglected issue with serious global implications for public health. This has been highlighted during the rapid and widespread rollout of COVID-19 vaccines. There has been increasing interest in devices to screen for SF non-vaccine medicines including tablets and capsules to empower inspectors and standardise surveillance. However, there has been very limited published research focussed on repurposing or developing new devices for screening for SF vaccines. To our knowledge, rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have not been used for this purpose but have important potential for detecting falsified vaccines. We performed a proof-in-principle study to investigate their diagnostic accuracy using a diverse range of RDT-vaccine/falsified vaccine surrogate pairs. In an initial assessment, we demonstrated the utility of four RDTs in detecting seven vaccines. Subsequently, the four RDTs were evaluated by three blinded assessors with seven vaccines and four falsified vaccines surrogates. The results provide preliminary data that RDTs could be used by multiple international organisations, national medicines regulators and vaccine manufacturers/distributors to screen for falsified vaccines in supply chains, aligned with the WHO global ‘Prevent, Detect and Respond’ strategy

    Isolation of Flow and Nonflow Correlations by Two- and Four-Particle Cumulant Measurements of Azimuthal Harmonics in sNN=\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 200 GeV Au+Au Collisions

    A data-driven method was applied to measurements of Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 200 GeV made with the STAR detector at RHIC to isolate pseudorapidity distance Δη\Delta\eta-dependent and Δη\Delta\eta-independent correlations by using two- and four-particle azimuthal cumulant measurements. We identified a component of the correlation that is Δη\Delta\eta-independent, which is likely dominated by anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations. It was also found to be independent of η\eta within the measured range of pseudorapidity η<1|\eta|<1. The relative flow fluctuation was found to be 34%±2%(stat.)±3%(sys.)34\% \pm 2\% (stat.) \pm 3\% (sys.) for particles of transverse momentum pTp_{T} less than 22 GeV/cc. The Δη\Delta\eta-dependent part may be attributed to nonflow correlations, and is found to be 5%±2%(sys.)5\% \pm 2\% (sys.) relative to the flow of the measured second harmonic cumulant at Δη>0.7|\Delta\eta| > 0.7

    Charged-to-neutral correlation at forward rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV

    Event-by-event fluctuations of the ratio of inclusive charged to photon multiplicities at forward rapidity in Au+Au collision at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV have been studied. Dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidences of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as baselines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A non-zero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations is observed in excess to the model prediction when charged particles and photons are measured in the same acceptance. We find that, unlike dynamical net-charge fluctuation, charge-neutral fluctuation is not dominated by correlation due to particle decay. Results are compared to the expectations based on the generic production mechanism of pions due to isospin symmetry, for which no significant (<1%) deviation is observed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
