    Dunaliella viridis TAV01: A halotolerant, Protein-Rich Microalga from the Algarve Coast

    Tolerance to harsh environmental conditions, high growth rates and an amino acid profile adequate for human consumption are beneficial features observed in Dunaliella viridis TAV01, a novel strain isolated from a salt pond in the Algarve, Portugal. TAV01 was identified down to the species level by maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacers one and two regions (ITS1 and ITS-2) and was supported by ITS2 secondary structure analysis. The biochemical profile revealed high protein (35.7 g 100 g−1 DW; 65% higher than the minimum recommended by the World Health Organization) and lipid contents (21.3 g 100 g−1 DW), a relatively higher proportion of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), α-linolenic (26.3% of total fatty acids (TFA)) and linoleic acids (22.8% of TFA), compared to those of other Dunaliella strains, and a balanced essential amino acids profile containing significant levels of leucine, phenylalanine, valine, and threonine. The major carotenoid was lutein, making up over 85% of total carotenoids. The presence of high-quality natural products in D. viridis TAV01 offers the possibility of using this new strain as a valuable biological resource for novel feed or food products as ingredients or supplements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Quantum Configuration and Phase Spaces: Finsler and Hamilton Geometries

    In this paper, we review two approaches that can describe, in a geometrical way, the kinematics of particles that are affected by Planck-scale departures, named Finsler and Hamilton geometries. By relying on maps that connect the spaces of velocities and momenta, we discuss the properties of configuration and phase spaces induced by these two distinct geometries. In particular, we exemplify this approach by considering the so-called qq-de Sitter-inspired modified dispersion relation as a laboratory for this study. We finalize with some points that we consider as positive and negative ones of each approach for the description of quantum configuration and phases spaces.Comment: 22 pages.     XMM-Newton view of galaxy pairs: activation of quiescent black holes?

    We report on XMM-Newton observations of three nearby galaxy pairs, AM0707-273, AM1211-465, and AM2040-674. All six galaxies were previously classified as HII galaxies based on optical and IR spectroscopic analysis. All galaxies were detected with XMM-Newton and each member was isolated and analyzed independently. The X-ray spectra reveal strong evidence of AGN activity in the NE member of AM1211-465 pair. We measured a luminosity of 1.94(+0.11/-0.15)x10^42 erg/s in the 2-10 keV band and the presence of a neutral FeK_alpha line with a confidence level of 98.8%. The high nH value, 2.2+/-0.2x10^22 cm^-2, would explain the misclassification of the source. Marginal evidence of AGN nature was found in the X-ray spectra of AM1211-465SW and AM0707-273E. The X-ray emission of the three remaining galaxies can be explained by starburst activity.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    Anxiolytic Effect of Citrus aurantium

    The objective of this study was to investigate the anxiolytic effects of the essential oil (EO) of Citrus aurantium L. in patients experiencing crack withdrawal. This was developed with internal users in therapeutic communities in Paraíba, Brazil. The test population consisted of 51 volunteers, subdivided into three groups. To elicit anxiety, the Simulated Public Speaking (SPS) method was used. Physiological measures were assessed at specific phases during the experiment using appropriate equipment. Psychological measures of anxiety were assessed using the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory (IDATE) and the Analog Smoke Scale (HAS). EO was administered by nebulization. The experiment was developed in individual sessions and consolidated to four phases. The results demonstrated that the test subjects in the groups that were given the EO maintained controlled anxiety levels during SPS, when compared to the Control Group (no treatment). Subjects who used the EO also maintained levels of “discomfort” and “cognitive impairment” during SPS. It was concluded that individuals who are experiencing internal crack cocaine withdrawal present high anxiety traits and that nebulization of the EO of Citrus aurantium L. provided an acute anxiolytic effect in crack cocaine users exposed to SPS

    Near-infrared reversible photoswitching of an isolated azobenzene-stilbene dye

    Photoswitching of a charged azobenzene-stilbene dye is investigated through laser excitation in a tandem ion mobility mass spectrometer. Action spectra associated with E→Z and Z→E photoisomerisation of the stilbene group exhibit bands at 685 and 440 nm, corresponding to S1←S0 and S3←S0 transitions, respectively. The data suggest that isomers possessing a Z configuration of the azobenzene unit rapidly convert to E isomers and are not discernible using ion mobility spectrometry, and that photoisomerisation occurs through excited state dynamics rather than statistical isomerisation on the ground state potential energy surface

    Ligas de Ti, do tipo b compostas de elementos não tóxicos estão sendo desenvolvidas para implantes biomédicos. As vantagens destas ligas incluem seu baixo módulo de elasticidade, boa compatibilidade mecânica assim como boa resistência à corrosão e, além disso, as variáveis de processamento podem ser controladas para obter propriedades desejadas. Estudos preliminares mostraram que a liga Ti-10Mo-20Nb envelhecida a 500ºC/4 h apresentou alta razão dureza/módulo de elasticidade. Diante do contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar o comportamento eletroquímico da liga Ti-10Mo- 20Nb envelhecida a 500ºC/4 h. O testes de corrosão foram realizados na temperatura de 25oC.     R534C mutation in hERG causes a trafficking defect in iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes from patients with type 2 long QT syndrome

    Patient-specific cardiomyocytes obtained from induced pluripotent stem cells (CM-iPSC) offer unprecedented mechanistic insights in the study of inherited cardiac diseases. The objective of this work was to study a type 2 long QT syndrome (LQTS2)-associated mutation (c.1600C > T in KCNH2, p.R534C in hERG) in CM-iPSC. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from two patients with the R534C mutation and iPSCs were generated. In addition, the same mutation was inserted in a control iPSC line by genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9. Cells expressed pluripotency markers and showed spontaneous differentiation into the three embryonic germ layers. Electrophysiology demonstrated that action potential duration (APD) of LQTS2 CM-iPSC was significantly longer than that of the control line, as well as the triangulation of the action potentials (AP), implying a longer duration of phase 3. Treatment with the IKr inhibitor E4031 only caused APD prolongation in the control line. Patch clamp showed a reduction of IKr on LQTS2 CM-iPSC compared to control, but channel activation was not significantly affected. Immunofluorescence for hERG demonstrated perinuclear staining in LQTS2 CM-iPSC. In conclusion, CM-iPSC recapitulated the LQTS2 phenotype and our findings suggest that the R534C mutation in KCNH2 leads to a channel trafficking defect to the plasma membrane.Fil: Mesquita, Fernanda C.
