Observational constraints on the second-order primordial power spectrum: Exploring a Continuous Spontaneous Localization inspired inflationary model
Inflation, a period of exponential expansion in the early Universe, is
considered an important part of the standard CDM cosmological model,
and plays a crucial role in explaining a wide range of current observations.
The standard inflationary model predicts a primordial spectrum of fluctuations
that is nearly scale-independent, fitting remarkably well the latest
observational data. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing discussion surrounding
the transition from an initial homogeneous and isotropic quantum state,
characterizing the matter fields during inflation, to a classical
inhomogeneous/anisotropic one, which gives rise to large-scale structure in the
Universe. To tackle this issue, in the present work we explore an inflationary
scenario where quantum ``collapse'' (or reduction) occurs naturally during the
evolution of the system; this model is inspired in the so called Continuous
Spontaneous Localization (CSL) model. Our present work builds upon previous
results by considering the primordial power spectrum up to the second order in
the Hubble Flow Functions, where we perform an estimation of the model free
parameters. By validating the predictions of the model against observational
data, we investigate whether this second-order calculation can explain the
slight departure from the power law observed in the scalar spectral running
index. We hope this research contributes to the understanding of the
quantum-to-classical transition and its implications for cosmology.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. This version corresponds largely to

Computed tomography-based assessment of body composition in surgical patients with esophageal cancer
Bei Sarkopenie wurde ein erhöhtes Risiko fĂŒr Pneumonie (Odds Ratio (OR)=2.69), Anastomoseninsuffizienz (OR=1.28), Major Komplikationen (OR=2.59) und Komplikationen (gesamt) (OR=2.38) ermittelt. Routinely obtained computed tomography (CT) scans can be used to quantify
muscle and fat compartments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value
of CT biomarkers regarding perioperative morbidity and survival in surgical patients with
esophageal cancer (EC).
Methods: 85 patients with locally advanced EC after neoadjuvant therapy who underwent
esophagectomy between January 2014 and January 2019 were retrospectively included. Preand
postoperative CT datasets were used for the segmentation of muscle and fat areas and
volumetric analysis of the psoas muscles. The body composition imaging biomarkers VAT
(visceral adipose tissue), SAT (subcutaneous fat adipose tissue), TAMA (total abdominal
muscle area), PMV (psoas volume) and PMA (psoas area), ATR (abdominal adipose tissue
ratio) and LSMI (lumbar skeletal muscle index) were determined. Sarcopenia was defined
as an LSMI of Ă38.5 cm2/m2 in women and Ă52.4 cm2/m2 in men. Sarcopenic obesity
was characterized by the coexistence of sarcopenia and a BMIĂ30 kg/m2. The biomarkers
were correlated with complications (total), major complications (according to Clavien-Dindo
[1]), anastomotic leakage, pneumonia, length of hospital stay, progression-free survival, and
overall survival.
Results: Preoperatively, 58 (68.2%) patients were diagnosed with sarcopenia and 7 (8.2%)
with sarcopenic obesity. Sarcopenia was associated with an increased risk of pneumonia
(odds ratio (OR) = 2.69), anastomotic leakage (OR = 1.28), major complications (OR =
2.59) and total complications (OR = 2.38). This effect was most pronounced in patients with
sarcopenic obesity, with a significant increase in the risk of major complications (OR = 6.00),
anastomotic leakages (OR = 3.07) and pneumonia (OR = 6.36). Median length of hospital
stay was prolonged by 2 days (CI [12.3-19.8], p=0.030) for sarcopenia and 32 days (CI [13.6-16.4], p=0.013) for sarcopenic obesity. Median progression-free survival was 9 months (CI [0.585-39.415], p=0.244) shorter in sarcopenia, 2 months (CI [0.00-19.02], p=0.634) shorter in sarcopenic obesity, median overall survival was 9 months (CI [4.70-35.30], p=0.432) shorter in sarcopenic obesity and 30 months (p=0.385) shorter in sarcopenia. Postoperatively, 76% of the patients were classified as sarcopenic and 14% with sarcopenic obesity. A more significant postoperative decline in fat mass (30.31-50.45%) compared to muscle mass biomarkers (3.17-6.22%) was observed.
Conclusion: Sarcopenia is prevalent in EC patients and is an indicator for an increased
morbidity and unfavorable outcomes after esophagectomy. The use of CT body composition
biomarkers can contribute to improve preoperative risk stratification of EC patients
Going Deeper than Tracking: A Survey of Computer-Vision Based Recognition of Animal Pain and Emotions
Advances in animal motion tracking and pose recognition have been a game changer in the study of animal behavior. Recently, an increasing number of works go 'deeper' than tracking, and address automated recognition of animals' internal states such as emotions and pain with the aim of improving animal welfare, making this a timely moment for a systematization of the field. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of computer vision-based research on recognition of pain and emotional states in animals, addressing both facial and bodily behavior analysis. We summarize the efforts that have been presented so far within this topic-classifying them across different dimensions, highlight challenges and research gaps, and provide best practice recommendations for advancing the field, and some future directions for research
Pregnancy and Fetal Outcomes After Exposure to Mefloquine in the Pre- and Periconception Period and During Pregnancy
Pregnant women who travel to malarious areas and their clinicians need data on the safety of malaria chemoprophylaxis. The drug safety database analysis of mefloquine exposure in pregnancy showed that the birth defect prevalence and fetal loss in maternal, prospectively-monitored cases were comparable to background rate
UnterschĂ€tzte Unbekannte - Aktive Störungen in der Oberplatte groĂer Subduktionssysteme
The Atacama Fault System (AFS) is an active trench-parallel fault system, located in the forearc of N-Chile directly above the subduction zone interface. Due to its well-exposed position in the hyper arid forearc of N-Chile it is the perfect target to investigate the interaction between the deformation cycle in the overriding forearc and the subduction zone seismic cycle of the underlying megathrust. Although the AFS and large parts of the upper crust are devoid of any noteworthy seismicity or historically documented earthquakes, at least three M=7 earthquakes in the past 10 ky have been documented in the paleoseismological record, demonstrating the potential of large events in the future. We apply a two-fold approach to explore fault activation and reactivation patterns through time and to investigate the triggering potential of upper crustal faults. 1) A new methodology using high-resolution topographic data allows us to investigate the number of past earthquakes for any given segment of the fault system as well as the amount of vertical displacement of the last increment. This provides us with a detailed dataset of past earthquake rupture of upper plate faults which is potentially linked to large subduction zone earthquakes. 2) The IPOC Creepmeter array provides us with high-resolution time series of fault displacement accumulation for eleven stations along the four most active branches of the AFS
A relational database to identify differentially expressed genes in the endometrium and endometriosis lesions
Endometriosis is a common inflammatory estrogen-dependent gynecological disorder, associated with pelvic pain and reduced fertility in women. Several aspects of this disorder and its cellular and molecular etiology remain unresolved. We have analyzed the global gene expression patterns in the endometrium, peritoneum and in endometriosis lesions of endometriosis patients and in the endometrium and peritoneum of healthy women. In this report, we present the EndometDB, an interactive web-based user interface for browsing the gene expression database of collected samples without the need for computational skills. The EndometDB incorporates the expression data from 115 patients and 53 controls, with over 24000 genes and clinical features, such as their age, disease stages, hormonal medication, menstrual cycle phase, and the different endometriosis lesion types. Using the web-tool, the end-user can easily generate various plot outputs and projections, including boxplots, and heatmaps and the generated outputs can be downloaded in pdf-format.Peer reviewe
