Behind the music: representation of labor and society in American work songs

    Get PDF
This thesis argues that American work songs can be used as valuable sources of information contributing to the study and interpretation of American labor history. Created from and based on the actual experiences of American working people rather than on political and ideological agendas, work songs can be regarded as media providing insight into the neglected parts of the United States’ history. They are both political and cultural artefacts, reflecting differences between various groups they were sung in and changes taking place in the overall American society through time. This quality brought them into the focus of generations of American ethnomusicologists, with John and Alan Lomax being the most prominent ones. Work songs with their various purposes – memorising and commemorating events, warning of dangers, coordinating work, protesting, giving hope in a better future and occasionally finding pride in what one does for living – reveal not only the attitude towards work, but also towards life in general. On the one hand they tell the complex story of the nation’s geographical and social incorporation through the perspective of sailors, lumberjacks, cowboys, slaves, miners, railroaders and industrial workers, and on the other they point to the things that went wrong. Social insensitivity, poor work conditions, low wages, the lack of worker’s rights and growing class differences are just some of them. In this thesis work songs are classified in categories based on the combination of historical, occupational, regional, racial and thematic determinants. While pre-industrial work songs show a strong connection to the process of work itself, coordinating it and depicting its immediate instances, work songs of industrial period focus more on the attitude towards work and work conditions, often acting as a tool for socio-political protest. A distinct position in American music history is taken by African American work songs, which provide a specific account of slavery – relations between slaves and their masters, yearnings for freedom and cultural identification with biblical figures. During the 20th century work songs gradually shift from the domain of folk to the popular music one. Typical workers’ concerns are voiced by professional musicians like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen, who particularly focuses on the problem of post-employment. Although work songs in post-industrial age can be regarded as commercial products themselves, their message remains strong. After all, work songs have always among other things been a form of entertainment too – an entertainment whose content bears history in its authentic form

Diabetic ketoacidosis is one of the most dangerous acute complications of diabetes, responsible for significant mortality if not treated properly and on time. The main features of this condition are insulin deficiency and increased levels of counter-regulatory hormones (glucagon, growth hormone, catecholamines and cortisol). Until recently it was thought that ketoacidosis is present only in type 1 diabetes, but more studies reported its presence in type 2 diabetes. Aim of this study was to establish the frequency and precipitating factors for the occurrence of diabetic ketoacidosis in patients with type 2 diabetes. The research involved searching data bases in the period from July 1st 2010 until July 1st 2015 and clinical profile of patients were analyzed. In newly diagnosed patients, concentration of blood glucose, acid-base status and the values of glycated hemoglobin were determined. Out of 72 patients, 27 (37.2%) had type 1 and 45 (62.5%) had type 2 diabetes. Among patients with type 1 diabetes, 8 (27.5%) patients had an episode of ketoacidosis as the initial case of diabetes, whereas among patients with type 2, 13 (28.8%) patients had mentioned complication as a first sign of disease. Non-compliance to treatment and infection were the most common causes of ketoacidosis

Student engagement should be one of the most powerful drivers for improvement of quality teaching in higher education. As students are direct beneficiaries of quality teaching, they are able to provide crucial feedback not only on what works well but also on what they would like to be done differently and how. The paper presents results of research related to students' perception of course Accounting Information Systems (AIS) and way of its implementation at the Faculty of Economic - University of Mostar. At this course lectures include many opportunities for active student engagement through cooperative learning activities (debates, team work, and presentation of project results). The authors developed two questionnaires in order to investigate the students' understanding of AIS course at the beginning and at the end of lectures. At the first class students completed a questionnaire about their expectations from AIS lectures (content, their engagement, learning activities, learning outcomes, assessment) and at the last class they completed another questionnaire about their real experiences related to AIS lectures. Research has been conducted for last two years and it enabled authors to use its results to tailor lectures in accordance with student's expectation and accordingly to improve teaching process. Prikazujemo slučaj 20-godišnjeg pacijenta s frakturom dijafize proksimalnog radiusa, uz angulaciju (AO-22-A2.2), liječenog kirurški dorzolateralnim pristupom, otvorenom repozicijom i osteosintezom s LC-DC pločom i kortikalnim vijcima, uz solidnu interfragmentarnu kompresiju. Reported is the case of a 20 year-old male with AO-22-A2.2 fracture of the proximal radial diaphysis with angulation, treated by dorsolateral approach, open reposition and osteosynthesis with LC-DC plate and cortical screws with solid interfragmental compression. The aim of this case report is to illustrate the anatomical and surgical complexity of this region that may contribute to operative injury of the deep branch of the radial nerve. This type of fracture is not common and requires surgical procedure in adults in order to restore the proper function of the elbow and wrist. The position of deep branch of the radial nerve which passes through the supinator muscles is characteristic for the proximal radial region. Despite of good identification of the deep branch of the radial nerve and dorsal interosseus nerve, their intraoperative injury in not uncommon as illustrated in this case

Comparison of guidelines for pain management in palliative patients

    Get PDF
Due to increasing life expectancy and great number of palliative patients in the world guidelines for treating pain are necessary for better quality of life of those patients. We have compared Croatian national guidelines for pain management in adults, ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) guidelines, guidelines of American Society of Clinical Oncology Clinical Practice (ASCO) and WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines. We wanted to know if Croatian guidelines are following the good clinical practice of ESMO, ASCO and WHO guidelines. Comparing the guidelines we have determined that all guidelines are similar, there are slight differences in usage of cannabinoids as drugs in pain management. All guidelines emphasize active role of patient in pain management, all use the same classification of pain (mild, moderate and severe pain) based on visual analogue scale. All four mentioned guidelines have 3 steps of pain management and recommended drugs to be used; first step paracetamol and NSAID, second step mild opioids with combination of NSAID and paracetamol, and third step usage of strong opioids. ESMO and ASCO also indicate that usage of cannabinoids could reduce the usage of strong opioids, but it must that be investigated furthermore. Croatian guidelines are up to date according to ESMO, ASCO and WHO guidelines. The only difference is emphasizing the usage of cannabinoids which should be considered in future Croatian guidelines for pain treatment

Comparison of clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of febrile seizures

    Get PDF
Febrile seizures are one of the most common neurological conditions in childhood, affecting 2-5 percent of all children and are most common seizure disorder in children aged 6-60 months. Therefore, developing evidence-based guidelines is important for improving the healthcare quality for those patients. We have compared The Croatian Society of Pediatric Neurology (HDDN) guidelines for the diagnosis and therapy of febrile seizures with the guidelines of American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) guidelines and several other national guidelines. All of the guidelines we have studied were based on American guidelines with slight differences between them. The main difference between the American and Croatian guidelines is that the Croatian guidelines recommend hospitalization for all children with the first episode of febrile convulsions, while according to American guidelines, hospitalization is not necessary in children older than 18 months with the first episode of simple febrile convulsion. Although our national guidelines show many similarities to guidelines of American Academy of Pediatrics and other national guidelines, there are certain differences that are characteristic for Croatian healthcare system. Since the Croatian guidelines were published six years ago, in the near future it would be important to reevaluate and update the guidelines with the aim of clinical practice improvement
