Robust and Biocompatible Functionalization of ZnS Nanoparticles by Catechol-Bearing Poly(2-Methyl-2-Oxazoline)s.
Zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles (NPs) are particularly interesting materials for their electronic and luminescent properties. Unfortunately, their robust and stable functionalization and stabilization, especially in aqueous media, has represented a challenging and not yet completely accomplished task. In this work, we report the synthesis of colloidally stable, photoluminescent and biocompatible core\u2013polymer shell ZnS and ZnS:Tb NPs by employing a water-in-oil miniemulsion (ME) process combined with surface functionalization via catechol-bearing poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline (PMOXA) of various molar masses. The strong binding of catechol anchors to the metal cations of the ZnS surface, coupled with the high stability of PMOXA against chemical degradation, enable the formation of suspensions presenting excellent colloidal stability. This feature, combined with the assessed photoluminescence and biocompatibility, make these hybrid NPs suitable for optical bioimaging
DeepPrivacy: A Generative Adversarial Network for Face Anonymization
We propose a novel architecture which is able to automatically anonymize
faces in images while retaining the original data distribution. We ensure total
anonymization of all faces in an image by generating images exclusively on
privacy-safe information. Our model is based on a conditional generative
adversarial network, generating images considering the original pose and image
background. The conditional information enables us to generate highly realistic
faces with a seamless transition between the generated face and the existing
background. Furthermore, we introduce a diverse dataset of human faces,
including unconventional poses, occluded faces, and a vast variability in
backgrounds. Finally, we present experimental results reflecting the capability
of our model to anonymize images while preserving the data distribution, making
the data suitable for further training of deep learning models. As far as we
know, no other solution has been proposed that guarantees the anonymization of
faces while generating realistic images.Comment: Accepted to ISVC 201
HIJING 1.0: A Monte Carlo Program for Parton and Particle Production in High Energy Hadronic and Nuclear Collisions
Based on QCD-inspired models for multiple jets production, we developed a
Monte Carlo program to study jet and the associated particle production in high
energy , and collisions. The physics behind the program which
includes multiple minijet production, soft excitation, nuclear shadowing of
parton distribution functions and jet interaction in dense matter is briefly
discussed. A detailed description of the program and instructions on how to use
it are given.Comment: 38 pages in LaTex, published in Comp. Phys. Comm. 83, 307 (1994)
Spin-Nematic Squeezed Vacuum in a Quantum Gas
Using squeezed states it is possible to surpass the standard quantum limit of
measurement uncertainty by reducing the measurement uncertainty of one property
at the expense of another complementary property. Squeezed states were first
demonstrated in optical fields and later with ensembles of pseudo spin-1/2
atoms using non-linear atom-light interactions. Recently, collisional
interactions in ultracold atomic gases have been used to generate a large
degree of quadrature spin squeezing in two-component Bose condensates. For
pseudo spin-1/2 systems, the complementary properties are the different
components of the total spin vector , which fully characterize the state on
an SU(2) Bloch sphere. Here, we measure squeezing in a spin-1 Bose condensate,
an SU(3) system, which requires measurement of the rank-2 nematic or quadrupole
tensor as well to fully characterize the state. Following a quench
through a nematic to ferromagnetic quantum phase transition, squeezing is
observed in the variance of the quadratures up to -8.3(-0.7 +0.6) dB
(-10.3(-0.9 +0.7) dB corrected for detection noise) below the standard quantum
limit. This spin-nematic squeezing is observed for negligible occupation of the
squeezed modes and is analogous to optical two-mode vacuum squeezing. This work
has potential applications to continuous variable quantum information and
quantum-enhanced magnetometry
ABCD of Beta Ensembles and Topological Strings
We study beta-ensembles with Bn, Cn, and Dn eigenvalue measure and their
relation with refined topological strings. Our results generalize the familiar
connections between local topological strings and matrix models leading to An
measure, and illustrate that all those classical eigenvalue ensembles, and
their topological string counterparts, are related one to another via various
deformations and specializations, quantum shifts and discrete quotients. We
review the solution of the Gaussian models via Macdonald identities, and
interpret them as conifold theories. The interpolation between the various
models is plainly apparent in this case. For general polynomial potential, we
calculate the partition function in the multi-cut phase in a perturbative
fashion, beyond tree-level in the large-N limit. The relation to refined
topological string orientifolds on the corresponding local geometry is
discussed along the way.Comment: 33 pages, 1 figur
A topological classification of convex bodies
The shape of homogeneous, generic, smooth convex bodies as described by the
Euclidean distance with nondegenerate critical points, measured from the center
of mass represents a rather restricted class M_C of Morse-Smale functions on
S^2. Here we show that even M_C exhibits the complexity known for general
Morse-Smale functions on S^2 by exhausting all combinatorial possibilities:
every 2-colored quadrangulation of the sphere is isomorphic to a suitably
represented Morse-Smale complex associated with a function in M_C (and vice
versa). We prove our claim by an inductive algorithm, starting from the path
graph P_2 and generating convex bodies corresponding to quadrangulations with
increasing number of vertices by performing each combinatorially possible
vertex splitting by a convexity-preserving local manipulation of the surface.
Since convex bodies carrying Morse-Smale complexes isomorphic to P_2 exist,
this algorithm not only proves our claim but also generalizes the known
classification scheme in [36]. Our expansion algorithm is essentially the dual
procedure to the algorithm presented by Edelsbrunner et al. in [21], producing
a hierarchy of increasingly coarse Morse-Smale complexes. We point out
applications to pebble shapes.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figure
Coherent states for compact Lie groups and their large-N limits
The first two parts of this article surveys results related to the
heat-kernel coherent states for a compact Lie group K. I begin by reviewing the
definition of the coherent states, their resolution of the identity, and the
associated Segal-Bargmann transform. I then describe related results including
connections to geometric quantization and (1+1)-dimensional Yang--Mills theory,
the associated coherent states on spheres, and applications to quantum gravity.
The third part of this article summarizes recent work of mine with Driver and
Kemp on the large-N limit of the Segal--Bargmann transform for the unitary
group U(N). A key result is the identification of the leading-order large-N
behavior of the Laplacian on "trace polynomials."Comment: Submitted to the proceeding of the CIRM conference, "Coherent states

Stress induced polarization of immune-neuroendocrine phenotypes in Gallus gallus
Immune-neuroendocrine phenotypes (INPs) stand for population subgroups differing in immune-neuroendocrine interactions. While mammalian INPs have been characterized thoroughly in rats and humans, avian INPs were only recently described in Coturnix coturnix (quail). To assess the scope of this biological phenomenon, herein we characterized INPs in Gallus gallus (a domestic hen strain submitted to a very long history of strong selective breeding pressure) and evaluated whether a social chronic stress challenge modulates the individualsâ interplay affecting the INP subsets and distribution. Evaluating plasmatic basal corticosterone, interferon-Îł and interleukin-4 concentrations, innate/acquired leukocyte ratio, PHA-P skin-swelling and induced antibody responses, two opposite INP profiles were found: LEWIS-like (15% of the population) and FISCHER-like (16%) hens. After chronic stress, an increment of about 12% in each polarized INP frequency was found at expenses of a reduction in the number of birds with intermediate responses. Results show that polarized INPs are also a phenomenon occurring in hens. The observed inter-individual variation suggest that, even after a considerable selection process, the population is still well prepared to deal with a variety of immune-neuroendocrine challenges. Stress promoted disruptive effects, leading to a more balanced INPs distribution, which represents a new substrate for challenging situations.Fil: Nazar, Franco Nicolas. Bim and Bmf synergize to induce apoptosis in Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection
Abstract: Bcl-2 family proteins including the pro-apoptotic BH3-only proteins are central regulators of apoptotic cell death. Here we show by a focused siRNA miniscreen that the synergistic action of the BH3-only proteins Bim and Bmf is required for apoptosis induced by infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ngo). While Bim and Bmf were associated with the cytoskeleton of healthy cells, they both were released upon Ngo infection. Loss of Bim and Bmf from the cytoskeleton fraction required the activation of Jun-N-terminal kinase-1 (JNK-1), which in turn depended on Rac-1. Depletion and inhibition of Rac-1, JNK-1, Bim, or Bmf prevented the activation of Bak and Bax and the subsequent activation of caspases. Apoptosis could be reconstituted in Bim-depleted and Bmf-depleted cells by additional silencing of antiapoptotic Mcl-1 and Bcl-XL, respectively. Our data indicate a synergistic role for both cytoskeletal-associated BH3-only proteins, Bim, and Bmf, in an apoptotic pathway leading to the clearance of Ngo-infected cells. Author Summary: A variety of physiological death signals, as well as pathological insults, trigger apoptosis, a genetically programmed form of cell death. Pathogens often induce host cell apoptosis to establish a successful infection. Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ngo), the etiological agent of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea, is a highly adapted obligate human-specific pathogen and has been shown to induce apoptosis in infected cells. Here we unveil the molecular mechanisms leading to apoptosis of infected cells. We show that Ngo-mediated apoptosis requires a special subset of proapoptotic proteins from the group of BH3-only proteins. BH3-only proteins act as stress sensors to translate toxic environmental signals to the initiation of apoptosis. In a siRNA-based miniscreen, we found Bim and Bmf, BH3-only proteins associated with the cytoskeleton, necessary to induce host cell apoptosis upon infection. Bim and Bmf inactivated different inhibitors of apoptosis and thereby induced cell death in response to infection. Our data unveil a novel pathway of infection-induced apoptosis that enhances our understanding of the mechanism by which BH3-only proteins control apoptotic cell death
