Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections observed by MESSENGER and Venus Express
Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) observed by the MESSENGER (MES)
and Venus Express (VEX) spacecraft have been catalogued and analysed. The ICMEs
were identified by a relatively smooth rotation of the magnetic field direction
consistent with a flux rope structure, coinciding with a relatively enhanced
magnetic field strength. A total of 35 ICMEs were found in the surveyed MES
data (primarily from March 2007 to April 2012), and 84 ICMEs in the surveyed
VEX data (from May 2006 to December 2013). The ICME flux rope configurations
have been determined. Ropes with northward leading edges were about four times
more common than ropes with southward leading edges, in agreement with a
previously established solar cycle dependence. Ropes with low inclinations to
the solar equatorial plane were about four times more common than ropes with
high inclinations, possibly an observational effect. Left and right-handed
ropes were observed in almost equal numbers. In addition, data from MES, VEX,
STEREO-A, STEREO-B and ACE were examined for multipoint signatures of the
catalogued ICMEs. For spacecraft separations below 15{\deg} in heliocentric
longitude, the second spacecraft observed the ICME flux rope in 82% of cases;
this percentage dropped to 49% for separations between 15 and 30{\deg}, to 18%
for separations between 30 and 45{\deg}, and to 12% for separations between 45
and 60{\deg}. As spacecraft separation increased, it became increasingly likely
that only the sheath and not the flux rope of the ICME was observed, in
agreement with the notion that ICME flux ropes are smaller in longitudinal
extent than the shocks or discontinuities that they often drive. Furthermore,
this study has identified 23 ICMEs observed by pairs of spacecraft close to
radial alignment. A detailed analysis of these events could lead to a better
understanding of how ICMEs evolve during propagation.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure
Investigation of Stacking Fault and Antiphase Boundary Segregation in Ni-Based Superalloys Using Density Functional Theory
Ni-base superalloys have a long history of use in jet turbine engines, and efforts to improve their performance in that application are ongoing. It is known that the precipitation of the Ni3Al ' phase within the disordered FCC phase strengthens the overall material. However, in the high-temperature environment found inside a turbine engine during operation, creep can cause the ' phase to transform to different, weaker phases along stacking faults, leading to a deterioration of performance. In the ' phase one mode of creep deformation is the formation of stacking fault ribbons, which consist of intrinsic stacking faults further shearing into antiphase boundaries (APBs). It is also known that certain alloying additions exhibit segregation to stacking faults. If segregating elements could be identified which segregate to the intrinsic stacking fault, but not to the APB, the inclusion of such elements could lead to improved creep strength in these alloys. To investigate this possibility, a density functional investigation of the segregation of W, Mo and Cr to both a superlattice intrinsic stacking fault (SISF) and an APB was performed. It was found that W, Mo and Cr all exhibit segregation to the SISF. In contrast, for the APB, Cr was either energy-neutral, or segregates, depending on the presence of additional nearby Cr, or on the specific lattice site upon which it was placed, while Mo and W did not segregate. Because W and Mo segregate to the SISF but not to the APB, the inclusion of these elements could provide a degree of protection against creep-related deterioration
Low dimensional magnetic solids and single crystal elpasolites: Need for improved crystal growing techniques
The need for extensive crystal growing experiments to develop techniques for preparing crystals suitable for magnetic anisotropy measurements and detailed X-ray and neutron diffraction studies is rationalized on the basis of the unique magnetic properties of the materials and their hydrogen bonded structures which have many features in common with metalloenzyme and metalloprotein active sites. Single crystals of the single and mixed lanthanide species are prepared by the Bridgeman technique of gradient solidification of molten samples. The effects of crystal imperfections on the optical properties of these materials are an important part of the projected research. A series of a-amido acid complexes of first row transition metals were prepared which crystallize as infinite linear chains and exhibit low dimensional magnetic ordering (one or two) at temperature below 40 K
Kinetic Monte Carlo Investigation of the Effects of Vacancy Pairing on Oxygen Diffusivity in Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia
Yttria-stabilized zirconia s high oxygen diffusivity and corresponding high ionic conductivity, and its structural stability over a broad range of temperatures, have made the material of interest for use in a number of applications, for example, as solid electrolytes in fuel cells. At low concentrations, the stabilizing yttria also serves to increase the oxygen diffusivity through the presence of corresponding oxygen vacancies, needed to maintain charge neutrality. At higher yttria concentration, however, diffusivity is impeded by the larger number of relatively high energy migration barriers associated with yttrium cations. In addition, there is evidence that oxygen vacancies preferentially occupy nearest-neighbor sites around either dopant or Zr cations, further affecting vacancy diffusion. We present the results of ab initio calculations that indicate that it is energetically favorable for oxygen vacancies to occupy nearest-neighbor sites adjacent to Y ions, and that the presence of vacancies near either species of cation lowers the migration barriers. Kinetic Monte Carlo results from simulations incorporating this effect are presented and compared with results from simulations in which the effect is not present
Multiscale Computer Simulation of Failure in Aerogels
Aerogels have been of interest to the aerospace community primarily for their thermal properties, notably their low thermal conductivities. While such gels are typically fragile, recent advances in the application of conformal polymer layers to these gels has made them potentially useful as lightweight structural materials as well. We have previously performed computer simulations of aerogel thermal conductivity and tensile and compressive failure, with results that are in qualitative, and sometimes quantitative, agreement with experiment. However, recent experiments in our laboratory suggest that gels having similar densities may exhibit substantially different properties. In this work, we extend our original diffusion limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) model for gel structure to incorporate additional variation in DLCA simulation parameters, with the aim of producing DLCA clusters of similar densities that nevertheless have different fractal dimension and secondary particle coordination. We perform particle statics simulations of gel strain on these clusters, and consider the effects of differing DLCA simulation conditions, and the resultant differences in fractal dimension and coordination, on gel strain properties
The British parliament and the American Civil War
During the 1860s, no one nation attracted as much attention from the British than the United States of America as the American Civil War proved to be one of the most divisive topics in Great Britain. In one particular forum - the British Parliament – the divisiveness concerning the war was clearly evident. This thesis examines the parliamentary debates on the neutrality policy from 1861 to 1863. In the debates, both the interventionists and the neutralists exploited numerous issues in their attempts to persuade their fellow members to support intervention or neutrality. The issues include the blockade, the cotton shortage, slavery, self-determination, and the fear of war with the United States if intervention occurred. Previous studies of Anglo-American relations have concluded that cotton was the major reason for intervention while slavery was the major reason for neutrality. This thesis contends that slavery and cotton were not the most common reasons for but simply two of many issues which were discussed

The mazEF toxin-antitoxin system as a novel antibacterial target in Acinetobacter baumannii
Although analysis of toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems can be instructive, to date, there is no information on the prevalence and identity of TA systems based on a large panel of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. The aim of the current study was to screen for functional TA systems among clinical isolates of A. baumannii and to identify the systems' locations. For this purpose, we screened 85 A. baumannii isolates collected from different clinical sources for the presence of the mazEF, relBE and higBA TA genes. The results revealed that the genes coding for the mazEF TA system were commonly present in all clinical isolates of A. baumannii. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that transcripts were produced in the clinical isolates. Our findings showed that TA genes are prevalent, harboured by chromosomes and transcribed within A. baumannii. Hence, activation of the toxin proteins in the mazEF TA system should be investigated further as an effective antibacterial strategy against this bacterium
