Essential oils of two portuguese endemic species of lavandula as a source of antifungal and antibacterial agents
Chemical investigations of L. stoechas subsp. luisieri and L. pedunculata essential oils were
analyzed by GC-MS, and the antimicrobial activity was performed against bacteria and fungi isolated
from food sources. The cytotoxicity of the essential oil was performed in NHDF cells using the
MTT method. According to the results, the main compounds of L. stoechas subsp. luisieri essential
oil were trans-α-necrodyl acetate (40.2%), lavandulyl acetate (11%), and trans-α-necrodol (10.4%),
while fenchone (50.5%) and camphor (30.0%) in L. pedunculata essential oil. The antifungal activity
of essential oils was confirmed with MIC values ranging from 1.2 to 18.7 µL/mL; for bacteria, it
ranged from 4.7 to 149.3 µL/mL. Both the Lavandula species tested showed low or equal MIC and
MBC/MFC values for L. stoechas subsp. luisieri essential oil, revealing greater efficacy in antimicrobial
activity. The L. stoechas subsp. luisieri essential oil revealed cytotoxic effects (30 ± 2% of cell viability)
in NHDF cells at all concentrations tested.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In this paper, we present the results obtained with the project Activities of Environmental Education and Ethics: avoiding waste and dealing with trash, which was supported by the University of São Paulo’s Dean of Culture Community Relations. This project aimed to promote initiatives focused on environmental issues, such as management of waste produced from households, schools and public places (organic and recyclable wastes), waste minimization, and environmental conservation. Three schools from the city of São Carlos-SP were chosen based on the interest manifested by the coordination teams and teachers in the project proposals, on student ages and on types of institution (public or private). The activities offered a framework for reflection and exchange of experiences in a reality far from ideal regarding consumption habits and waste disposal. Without doubt, these actions are always positive, for they are designed to educate individuals concerning different conceptions of the environmental. Comparatively, the students showed to be differently interested in the proposed activities, which it was most related to different realities at home and schools. However, after facing environmental issues, they become highly motivated, solidifying a positive relationship between school and neighborhood
Mefloquine–oxazolidine derivatives, derived from mefloquine and arenecarbaldehydes: In vitro activity including against the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis strain T113
AbstractTen new mefloquine–oxazolidine derivatives, 4-[(1S,8aR)-3-(aryl)hexahydro[1,3]oxazolo[3,4-a]pyridin-1-yl]-2,8-bis(trifluoromethyl)quinoline (1: aryl=substituted phenyl) and 4-[(1S,8aR)-3-(heteroaryl)hexahydro[1,3]oxazolo[3,4-a]pyridin-1-yl]-2,8-bis(trifluoromethyl)quinoline [2: heteroaryl=5-nitrothien-2-yl (2a); 5-nitrofuran-2-yl (2b) and 4H-imidazol-2-yl) (2c)], have been synthesized and evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Compounds 1f (aryl=3-ethoxyphenyl), 1g (Ar=3,4,5-(MeO)3-C6H2) and 2c were slightly more active than mefloquine (MIC=33μM) with MICs=24.5, 22.5 and 27.4, respectively, whereas compounds 1e (aryl=3,4-(MeO)2-C6H3) and 2a (MICs=11.9 and 12.1μM, respectively) were ca. 2.7 times more active than mefloquine, with a better tuberculostatic activity than the first line tuberculostatic agent ethambutol (MIC=15.9). The compounds were also assayed against the MDR strain T113 and the same MICs were observed. Thus the new derivatives have advantages over such anti-TB drugs as isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and ofloxacin, for which this strain is resistant. The most active compounds were not cytotoxic to Murine Macrophages Cells in a concentration near their MIC values
Cross-amplification and characterization of microsatellite markers in Alcantarea patriae Versieux & Wand
The Alcantarea patriae is a Bromeliaceae endemic to the inselbergs of the Atlantic Forest. This taxon, described in the year of 2007 by Versieux & Wanderley, presents restricted and fragmented distribution outside conservation units. Studies to evaluate the genetic structure of its populations can contribute to the conservation and management strategies for the species. In this study, 31 microsatellite markers, descriptive to six different Bromeliaceae species, were evaluated by cross-amplification tests in 20 individuals of A. patriae. The individuals were collected in the district of Vila Cruzeiro, in the municipality of Jerônimo Monteiro. Twelve markers were polymorphic and 10 monomorphic, with an amplification success rate of 71%. The displayed polymorphism information content was considered high, indicating that the selected markers are informative. The values found for the fixation index were positive and indicated the occurrence of inbreeding. The mean number of alleles was 4.66 (3-6), the mean expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.6605 and 0.4618, respectively. The detection of polymorphic markers was important for future studies of diversity and genetic structuring of natural populations and for germplasm bank creation aiming to contribute to in situ and ex situ conservations of A. patriae. © 2017 The Authors
Modeling of Photoionized Plasmas
In this paper I review the motivation and current status of modeling of
plasmas exposed to strong radiation fields, as it applies to the study of
cosmic X-ray sources. This includes some of the astrophysical issues which can
be addressed, the ingredients for the models, the current computational tools,
the limitations imposed by currently available atomic data, and the validity of
some of the standard assumptions. I will also discuss ideas for the future:
challenges associated with future missions, opportunities presented by improved
computers, and goals for atomic data collection.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, to appear in the proceedings of Xray2010,

Mucosal-Associated Invariant T cells exhibit distinct functional signatures associated with protection against typhoid fever
We have previously demonstrated that Mucosal-Associated Invariant T (MAIT) cells secrete multiple cytokines after exposure to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), the causative agent of typhoid fever in humans. However, whether cytokine secreting MAIT cells can enhance or attenuate the clinical severity of bacterial infections remain debatable. This study characterizes human MAIT cell functions in subjects participating in a wild-type S. Typhi human challenge model. Here, we found that MAIT cells exhibit distinct functional signatures associated with protection against typhoid fever. We also observed that the cytokine patterns of MAIT cell responses, rather than the average number of cytokines expressed, are more predictive of typhoid fever outcomes. These results might enable us to objectively, based on functional parameters, identify cytokine patterns that may serve as predictive biomarkers during natural infection and vaccination
