    Light absorption properties of southeastern Bering Sea waters: Analysis, parameterization and implications for remote sensing.

    The absorption coefficients of phytoplankton (aPHY(λ)), non-algal particles (NAP) (aNAP(λ)) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (aCDOM(λ)) were investigated and parameterized in the southeastern Bering Sea during July 2008. The absorption coefficients were well structured with respect to hydrographic and biogeochemical characteristics of the shelf. The highest values of aPHY(443) were observed offshore and the lowest values of aPHY(443) were found in the coastal domain, a low productivity region associated with limited macronutrients. Values of aDG(λ) (aCDOM(λ) + aNAP(λ)) revealed an east–west gradient pattern with higher values in the coastal domain, and lower values in the outer domain. Lower chlorophyll specific aPHY(λ) (a*PHY(λ)) observed relative to middle and lower latitude waters indicated a change in pigment composition and/or package effect, which was consistent with phytoplankton community structure. aCDOM(λ) was the dominant light absorbing coefficient at all wavelengths examined except at 676 nm. Modeling of remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)) and the diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd(λ)) from inherent optical properties revealed the strong influence of aCDOM(λ) on Rrs(λ) and Kd(λ). Good optical closure was achieved between modeled and radiometer measured Rrs(λ) and Kd(λ) with average percent difference of less than 25% and 19% respectively, except at red wavelengths. The aCDOM(λ) accounted for > 50% of Kd(λ) which was vertically variable. Chlorophyll-a calculated by the NASA standard chlorophyll-a algorithm (OC4.v6) was overestimated due to higher aCDOM(λ) and underestimated due to lower a*PHY(λ) at low and high concentrations of chlorophyll-a, respectively

    Seismic tomographic imaging of the Eastern Mediterranean Mantle: Implications for terminal-stage subduction, the uplift of Anatolia, and the development of the North Anatolian Fault

    The Eastern Mediterranean captures the eastwest transition from active subduction of Earth'soldest oceanic lithosphere to continental collision, making it an ideal location to study terminalstagesubduction. Asthenospheric or subductionrelated processes are the main candidates for the region's ∼2kmuplift and Miocene volcanism; however, their relative importance is debated. To address these issues, wepresent new P and S wave relative arrivaltime tomographic models that reveal fast anomalies associatedwith an intact Aegean slab in the west, progressing to a fragmented, partially continental, Cyprean slabbelow central Anatolia. We resolve a gap between the Aegean and Cyprean slabs, and a horizontal tear in theCyprean slab below the Central Anatolian Volcanic Province. Below eastern Anatolia, the completelydetached “Bitlis” slab is characterized by fast wave speeds at ∼500 km depth. Assuming slab sinkingrates mirror ArabiaAnatolia convergence rates, the Bitlis slab's location indicates an Oligocene (∼26 Ma)breakoff. Results further reveal a strong velocity contrast across the North Anatolian Fault likelyrepresenting a 40–60 km decrease in lithospheric thickness from the Precambrian lithosphere north of thefault to a thinned Anatolian lithosphere in the south. Slow uppermostmantle wave speeds below activevolcanoes in eastern Anatolia, and ratios of P to S wave relative traveltimes, indicate a thin lithosphere andmelt contributions. Positive central and eastern Anatolian residual topography requires additional supportfrom hot/buoyant asthenosphere to maintain the 1–2 km elevation in addition to an almost absentlithospheric mantle.     Efeitos do ataque de fungos de podridão nas características da madeira de eucalipto.

    Resumo - Os fungos de podridão são conhecidos por degradarem a parte estrutural da madeira, porém poucos estudos existem sobre sua influência na madeira. Os fungos de podridão branca degradam a lignina deixando a madeira com uma coloração clara e os fungos de podridão parda, degradam a holocelulose, deixando mais escura. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar alterações nas características da madeira após ter sofrido ataque fúngico em laboratório. Para este estudo, amostras de E. dunnii foram submetidas ao ataque de fungos de podridão branca (Pleurotus ostreatus), parda (Lentinula edodes) além de uma testemunha. As amostras foram autoclavadas e foram colocadas em vidros previamente inoculados com o fungo em solução ágar. Estas amostras permaneceram em incubadora a 25±2 ºC para o desenvolvimento dos fungos sem adição de água. Foram realizadas coletas aos 65, 131 e 219 dias após a implantação do experimento para análise de poder calorífico (PCS), teor de umidade (TU), teores de lignina (LIG), holocelulose (HOL) e extrativos totais (EXT), perda de massa (PM). Os dados foram submetidos à ANOVA e teste de Tukey. O ataque dos fungos não influenciou no PCS, LIG E HOL. Os fungos afetaram EXT, PM e TU. O resultado mais expressivo foi no TU, onde o teor médio nas amostras atacadas pelos fungos foi 66% superior à umidade das amostras sem ataque. Este resultado demonstra que a madeira submetida a longo período de secagem ao ar livre pode perder qualidade e diminuir a eficiência energética da queima devido ao elevado TU

    This paper argues for the important role of customers as a source of competitive advantage and firm growth, an issue which has been largely neglected in the resource-based view of the firm. It conceptualizes Penrose’s (1959) notion of an ‘inside track’ and illustrates how in-depth knowledge about established customers combines with joint problem-solving activities and the rapid assimilation of new and previously unexploited skills and resources. It is suggested that the inside track represents a distinct and perhaps underestimated way of generating rents and securing long-term growth. This also implies that the sources of sustainable competitive advantage in important respects can be sought in idiosyncratic interfirm relationships rather than within the firm itself

    Maritime Aerosol Network as a Component of AERONET - First Results and Comparison with Global Aerosol Models and Satellite Retrievals

    The Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) has been collecting data over the oceans since November 2006. Over 80 cruises were completed through early 2010 with deployments continuing. Measurement areas included various parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Northern and Southern Pacific Ocean, the South Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and inland seas. MAN deploys Microtops handheld sunphotometers and utilizes a calibration procedure and data processing traceable to AERONET. Data collection included areas that previously had no aerosol optical depth (AOD) coverage at all, particularly vast areas of the Southern Ocean. The MAN data archive provides a valuable resource for aerosol studies in maritime environments. In the current paper we present results of AOD measurements over the oceans, and make a comparison with satellite AOD retrievals and model simulations

    Exonic DNA Sequencing of ERBB4 in Bipolar Disorder

    The Neuregulin-ErbB4 pathway plays a crucial role in brain development and constitutes one of the most biologically plausible signaling pathways implicated in schizophrenia and, to a lesser extent, in bipolar disorder (BP). However, recent genome-wide association analyses have not provided evidence for common variation in NRG1 or ERBB4 influencing schizophrenia or bipolar disorder susceptibility. In this study, we investigate the role of rare coding variants in ERBB4 in BP cases with mood-incongruent psychotic features, a form of BP with arguably the greatest phenotypic overlap with schizophrenia. We performed Sanger sequencing of all 28 exons in ERBB4, as well as part of the promoter and part of the 3′UTR sequence, hypothesizing that rare deleterious variants would be found in 188 cases with mood-incongruent psychosis from the GAIN BP study. We found 42 variants, of which 16 were novel, although none were non-synonymous or clearly deleterious. One of the novel variants, present in 11.2% of cases, is located next to an alternative stop codon, which is associated with a shortened transcript of ERBB4 that is not translated. We genotyped this variant in the GAIN BP case-control samples and found a marginally significant association with mood-incongruent psychotic BP compared with controls (additive model: OR = 1.64, P-value = 0.055; dominant model: OR = 1.73. P-value = 0.039). In conclusion, we found no rare variants of clear deleterious effect, but did uncover a modestly associated novel variant that could affect alternative splicing of ERBB4. However, the modest sample size in this study cannot definitively rule out a role for rare variants in bipolar disorder and studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm the observed association

    United States contributions to the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (US IIOE-2)

    From the Preface: The purpose of this document is to motivate and coordinate U.S. participation in the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2) by outlining a core set of research priorities that will accelerate our understanding of geologic, oceanic, and atmospheric processes and their interactions in the Indian Ocean. These research priorities have been developed by the U.S. IIOE-2 Steering Committee based on the outcomes of an interdisciplinary Indian Ocean science workshop held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography on September 11-13, 2017. The workshop was attended by 70 scientists with expertise spanning climate, atmospheric sciences, and multiple sub-disciplines of oceanography. Workshop participants were largely drawn from U.S. academic institutions and government agencies, with a few experts invited from India, China, and France to provide a broader perspective on international programs and activities and opportunities for collaboration. These research priorities also build upon the previously developed International IIOE-2 Science Plan and Implementation Strategy. Outcomes from the workshop are condensed into five scientific themes: Upwelling, inter-ocean exchanges, monsoon dynamics, inter-basin contrasts, marine geology and the deep ocean. Each theme is identified with priority questions that the U.S. research community would like to address and the measurements that need to be made in the Indian Ocean to address them.We thank the following organizations and programs for financial contributions, support and endorsement: the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; the U.S. Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry program funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; the NASA Physical Oceanography Program; Scripps Institution of Oceanography; and the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum
