    An update of the Worldwide Integrated Assessment (WIA) on systemic insecticides. Part 2: impacts on organisms and ecosystems

    New information on the lethal and sublethal effects of neonicotinoids and fipronil on organisms is presented in this review, complementing the previous WIA in 2015. The high toxicity of these systemic insecticides to invertebrates has been confirmed and expanded to include more species and compounds. Most of the recent research has focused on bees and the sublethal and ecological impacts these insecticides have on pollinators. Toxic effects on other invertebrate taxa also covered predatory and parasitoid natural enemies and aquatic arthropods. Little, while not much new information has been gathered on soil organisms. The impact on marine coastal ecosystems is still largely uncharted. The chronic lethality of neonicotinoids to insects and crustaceans, and the strengthened evidence that these chemicals also impair the immune system and reproduction, highlights the dangers of this particular insecticidal classneonicotinoids and fipronil. , withContinued large scale – mostly prophylactic – use of these persistent organochlorine pesticides has the potential to greatly decreasecompletely eliminate populations of arthropods in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Sublethal effects on fish, reptiles, frogs, birds and mammals are also reported, showing a better understanding of the mechanisms of toxicity of these insecticides in vertebrates, and their deleterious impacts on growth, reproduction and neurobehaviour of most of the species tested. This review concludes with a summary of impacts on the ecosystem services and functioning, particularly on pollination, soil biota and aquatic invertebrate communities, thus reinforcing the previous WIA conclusions (van der Sluijs et al. 2015)

    Ultramafic vegetation and soils in the circumboreal region of the Northern Hemisphere

    The paper summarizes literature on climate, soil chemistry, vegetation and metal accumulation by plants found on ultramafic substrata in the circumboreal zone (sensu Takhtajan, Floristic regions of the world, 1986) of the Northern Hemisphere. We present a list of 50 endemic species and 18 ecotypes obligate to ultramafic soils from the circumboreal region of Holarctic, as well as 30 and 2 species of Ni and Zn hyperaccumulators, respectively. The number of both endemics and hyperaccumulators are markedly lower compared to that of the Mediterranean and tropical regions. The diversity of plant communities on ultramafics soils of the circumboral region is also described. The underlying causes for the differences of ultramafic flora between arctic, cold, cool temperate and Mediterranean and tropical regions are also discussed. © 2018, The Ecological Society of Japan

    Hunting, Herding, and Caravanning: Osteometric Identifications of Camelid Morphotypes at Khonkho Wankane, Bolivia

    Khonkho Wankane is a ceremonial center located in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin, Bolivia. During the Late Formative period (AD 1-500), its residents practiced agropastoral lifeways and participated in the rise of the state at Tiwanaku. Like at many Andean sites, bones from the family Camelidae are the most abundant large mammal in domestic contexts. Identifying camelid morphotypes represented by these bones carries far-reaching implications for understanding past hunting, herding, and caravanning practices, and their roles in larger social and economic webs. Identifications were based on a locally focused reference collection, including llamas (Lama glama) from the immediate vicinity of the site, as well as Andean guanacos (Lama guanicoe), a much smaller morphotype than the Patagonian guanacos used in many osteometric studies. Multivariate statistical analyses and incisor morphology identified all four camelid. Different analyses suggest that the crux of osteometry lies in the reference collection, not the statistical test. An additional, very large morphotype likely corresponds to a castrated llama, the preferred cargo animal among modern drovers. The presence of these animals is interpreted as evidence that groups hunted vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) and guanaco, which are not currently present around the site, herded llamas and alpacas (Vicugna pacos), and perhaps organized caravans with castrated llamas.Fil: Gasco, Alejandra Valeria.     At the Feet of the Fortress: Analysis of Inka Period (ca. AD 1430-1536) Archaeofaunal Assemblages from Residential Unit 1 (RU1), Pucara de Tilcara (Jujuy, Argentina).

    This paper reports the results of a zooarchaeological analysis conducted on the occupation layer of a compound structure (Residential Unit 1) of the Pucara de Tilcara archaeological site (Jujuy Province, northwestern Argentina). Its occupation span extends between the 13th and 15th centuries AD, but evidence diagnostic of the Inka Period (AD 1430-1536) is predominant. Residential Unit 1 was a house-workshop that hosted specialized crafts like metallurgy and lapidary during the Inka Period. It was proposed in previous works that artisans living at Pucara de Tilcara were provisioned with agropastoral products by the Inka administration. This paper aims to test that hypothesis against the zooarchaeological evidence of Residential Unit 1. Three variables were used as proxies for state-sponsored distribution: taxonomic diversity (family and species ranks), and skeletal and age profiles of the predominant zoological family (Camelidae) in the assemblage. The results show a high degree of continuity with the regional record, characterized by a herding-hunting strategy focused on domestic and wild species of Camelidae and a mixed mortality pattern. The skeletal profile shows a strong and negative correlation with the desiccation potential of elements, which could be indicative of local production of chalona. Overall, faunal evidence does not show any sign of centralized distribution

    Hunting Landscapes in the North Margin of Lake Viedma (Southern Patagonia, Argentina): Preys, Strategies and Technology

    The aim of this paper is to describe and discuss the strategies and technology implemented by Late Holocene hunter-gatherers to hunt their most prominent animal resources, guanaco (Lama guanicoe) and choique (Rhea pennata pennata), in different settings in the north margin of Lake Viedma (Santa Cruz province, Argentina). In order to do that, we use archaeological distributional data from different altitudinal levels, namely lakeshore dunes (255–275 m.a.s.l), mid-altitude plains or pampas (276–900 m.a.s.l.), and Del Tobiano basaltic plateau (≥900 m a.s.l.). The pampas, particularly the grounds below 400 m.a.s.l., may have been used by both species as their wintering grounds (although their permanence in this environment could have occurred throughout the year), while the mid-altitude plains and the plateau seem to have been primarily used by the guanaco as grazing and calving grounds from late spring to early fall, the months in which most of its surface is free of snow. Likely, differences in seasonality, topography and use of these environments by the guanaco and choique social groups may have forced people to adopt different hunting strategies, tactics and weaponry. Frequency variations in the presence of projectile points and bolas at different altitudinal levels have been observed. In the pampas, evidence suggests that guanaco hunting was aided by the use of bow and arrows and/or throwing weapons, such as spears and bolas, the latter likely also used in the hunting of choique. In the plateau, on the other hand, guanaco hunting tactics involved the use of blinds either by individuals or small groups of hunters who were mainly equipped with throwing weapons and/or bow and arrows. The archeological record of the plateau shows a logistic hunting-oriented strategy as well as a residential use during summer months. Artifact density and variety at lakeshore dunes suggest a greater intensity of occupation of these grounds, probably linked to a more residential use—either seasonal (fall/winter) or year-round—made possible by the availability, although in variable density throughout the year, of guanaco and choique. Consequently, the regional archeological landscape exhibits evidence of integration and complementarity of the different altitudinal levels in the northern margin of the Lake Viedma, at least during the Late Holocene.Fil: Belardi, Juan Bautista.     The Patagonian Fossil Lizards

    The squamates constitute a significant part of the present-day South American herpetofauna, being their fossils a crucial evidence for understanding the origin and evolution of the main clades. The fossil record of squamates in Patagonia is still scarce but it represents one of the most prolific of entire South America. An updated systematic review of the available information of Patagonian fossil lizards is summarized in this chapter. The oldest lizards of Patagonia are found as back as the Upper Cretaceous and include materials referred to two of the most diverse extant clades: Iguania and Scincomorpha. Palaeocene and Eocene interestingly do not provide any lizard specimen from this region. The record reappeared in the Late Oligocene with iguanians. A significant increasing of materials is revealed later in the Neogene. Early Miocene lizards include the first appearance of extant species (the iguanids Liolaemus and Pristidactylus, and the teiids Tupinambis and Callopistes). Late Early Miocene deposits provide materials of Pristidactylus and Tupinambis, whereas an indeterminate tupinambine of the Mid-Miocene is the youngest Neogene record of a lizard in Patagonia. Palaeoclimatic changes affected the distributional patterns of lizards in Patagonia, restricting the distribution of Pristidactylus and Tupinambis which, during the Miocene, reached localities southern than at present. The uplift of the austral Andean cordillera would have been decisive for the diversification of Liolaemus and Pristidactylus at both sides the Andes, whereas the trans-Andean teiid Callopistes had a widespread distribution in the past, reaching the Pampean Region and Patagonia, in Argentina.Fil: Albino, Adriana Maria.
