    Report on the socio-economic impact of Natural Rubber cultivation under the block planting scheme in Tripura

    The study is a pioneering attempt to assess the socio-economic impact of the Block Planting Scheme (BPS) from the angle of the beneficiaries,implementing agencies and the policymakers.The report is based on the primary information gathered from 480 households drawn from Block Planting Units with mature (Mature BPUs)and immature (Immature BPUs) area under Natural Rubber (NR) as well as households attached to Group Processing Scheme (GPUs) with mature area under NR during the year 2008.The tripartite BPS involving the Rubber Board, the State Government of Tripura and the beneficiaries has been unique in its contents and mode of implementation since 1992.The average household income of mature BPUs was Rs.99168 compared to Rs.46824 of immature BPUs. Therefore, an annual income difference of Rs.52344 (112%) was observed between households with and without income from rubber (mature and immature BPUs).The compositions of income showed that rubber was the major source of income for GPUs (75%) and mature BPUs (66%). For immature BPUs,employment was the major source of income (77%).In the long-run, the concerned agencies of the state government may initiate skill oriented programmes for empowering the unemployed/underemployed youth along with improvements in the infrastructural facilities. Such policy initiatives will enable diversification of the sources of income and ensure sustainability of NR cultivation as observed in the case of Kerala and FELDA in Malaysia

    dS/CFT correspondence on a brane

    We study branes moving in an AdS Schwarzschild black hole background. When the brane tension exceeds a critical value, the induced metric on the brane is of FRW type and asymptotically de Sitter. We discuss the relevance of such configurations to dS/CFT correspondence. When the black hole mass reaches a critical value that depends on the brane tension, the brane interpolates in the infinite past and future between a dS space and a finite space of zero Hubble constant. This corresponds to a cosmological evolution without a Big Bang or a Big Crunch. Moreover, the central charge of the CFT dual to the dS brane enters the Cardy-Verlinde formula that gives the entropy of the thermal CFT dual to the bulk AdS black hole.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, v2 references adde

    Crop physiology of elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst. Nicolson)

    Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst. Nicolson), syn. A. campanulatus (Roxb.) BL. exDence (also elephant foot yam) is largely cultivated in the Philippines, Java, Indonesia, Sumatra, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India and China. In India, it is cultivated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Jarkhand. Sree Padma, Gajendra, Sree Athira (a hybrid), Bidhan Kusum and NDA-9 are some of the high yielding Amorphophallus varieties released for cultivation. The corm production potential of this crop is 50-80 t ha-1 and net economic return is about 2000 – 3000 US$ per ha. Plant growth and corm yield is influenced by the size of planting material (corms/cormels/corm pieces), plant spacing, nutrient management and water availability. Nevertheless, the production aspect of this crop is less understood as scanty research has been conducted in this crop.     E-learning in Higher Education of Nurse and Midwife Educators in Developing Countries: The Case of Liberia

    This case study describes the use of e-learning in a new graduate program in nursing and midwifery education in Liberia, a developing country recovering from a decades long internal conflict and more recently an Ebola epidemic. The program was established to prepare the educator workforce with current educational concepts and practices as well as health information. Issues involved in making the hardware and internet access are addressed. Through the voices of eleven graduate students who were also nurse and midwife instructors in education facilities throughout the country, perceptions of using e-learning for course work as well as the experience of beginning to use technology in teaching pre-service students are identified. Sustainment and expansion of e-learning challenges are addressed. To further global health security and equity in access to education the Liberian government, administrators, educators and bi- or multi-national partnerships need to prioritize investments technology and e-learning in developing countries

    International Recommendations for Training Future Toxicologic Pathologists Participating in Regulatory-Type, Nonclinical Toxicity Studies*

    The International Federation of Societies of Toxicologic Pathologists (IFSTP) proposes a common global framework for training future toxicologic pathologists who will support regulatory-type nonclinical toxicology studies. Trainees optimally should undertake a scientific curriculum of at least 5 years at an accredited institution leading to a clinical degree (veterinary medicine or medicine). Trainees should then obtain 4 or more years of intensive pathology practice during a residency and/or on-the-job “apprenticeship,” at least 2 years of which must be focused on regulatory-type toxicologic pathology topics. Possession of a recognized pathology qualification (i.e., certification) is highly recommended. A non-clinical pathway (e.g., a graduate degree in medical biology or pathology) may be possible if medically trained pathologists are scarce, but this option is not optimal. Regular, lifelong continuing education (peer review of nonclinical studies, professional meetings, reading, short courses) will be necessary to maintain and enhance one’s understanding of current toxicologic pathology knowledge, skills, and tools. This framework should provide a rigorous yet flexible way to reliably train future toxicologic pathologists to generate, interpret, integrate, and communicate data in regulatory-type, nonclinical toxicology studies

    Virtual Compton Scattering and Neutral Pion Electroproduction in the Resonance Region up to the Deep Inelastic Region at Backward Angles

    We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) process via the H(e,eâ€Čp)Îł(e,e'p)\gamma exclusive reaction in the nucleon resonance region, at backward angles. Results are presented for the WW-dependence at fixed Q2=1Q^2=1 GeV2^2, and for the Q2Q^2-dependence at fixed WW near 1.5 GeV. The VCS data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions. The observed Q2Q^2-dependence is smooth. The measured ratio of H(e,eâ€Čp)Îł(e,e'p)\gamma to H(e,eâ€Čp)π0(e,e'p)\pi^0 cross sections emphasizes the different sensitivity of these two reactions to the various nucleon resonances. Finally, when compared to Real Compton Scattering (RCS) at high energy and large angles, our VCS data at the highest WW (1.8-1.9 GeV) show a striking Q2Q^2- independence, which may suggest a transition to a perturbative scattering mechanism at the quark level.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures.
