Highly dispersed Ptδ+ on TixCe(1−x)O2 as an active phase in preferential oxidation of CO
Structure–activity relationships for 1 wt.% Pt catalysts were investigated for a series of TixCe(1−x)O2 (x = 1, 0.98, 0.9, 0.5, 0.2 and 0) supports prepared by the sol–gel method. The catalysts prepared by impregnation were characterized in detail by applying a wide range of techniques as N2-isotherms, XRF, XRD, Raman, XPS, H2-TPR, Drifts, UV–vis, etc. and tested in the preferential oxidation of CO in the presence of H2. Also several reaction conditions were deeply analyzed. A strong correlation between catalyst performance and the electronic properties let us to propose, based in all the experimental results, a plausible reaction mechanism where several redox cycles are involved.Financial support from Generalitat Valenciana and Ministerio de EconomÃa y Competitividad (Spain) through projects PROME-TEOII/2014/004 and MAT2010-21147 is gratefully acknowledged. Strategies for surface modification with Ag-shaped nanoparticles: electrocatalytic enhancement of screen-printed electrodes for the detection of heavy metals
Screen-printed carbon nanofiber electrodes (SPCNFEs) represent an alternative with great acceptance due to their results, as well as their low impact on the environment. In order to improve their performance, in the present work they were modified with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and electrochemically characterized by using anodic stripping voltammetry. From the Ag-NP synthesis, silver seeds (Ag-NS) and silver nanoprisms (Ag-NPr) were obtained. The Ag-NP formation was confirmed by micrographs, where Ag-NPs with diameters of 12.20 ± 0.04 nm for Ag-NS and 20.40 ± 0.09 nm for Ag-NPr were observed. The electrodes were modified by using three different deposition methods—drop-casting, spin-coating, and in situ approaches—that offer different nanoparticle distribution and electrode modification times. It was observed that the last methodology showed a low amount of Ag-NS deposited on the electrode surface and deep alteration of this surface. Those facts suggest that the in situ synthesis methodology was not appropriate for the determination of heavy metals, and it was discarded. The incorporation of the nanoparticles by spin-coating and drop-casting strategies showed different spatial distribution on the electrode surface, as proved by scanning electron microscopy. The electrodes modified by these strategies were evaluated for the cadmium(II) and lead(II) detection using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, obtaining detection limit values of 2.1 and 2.8 µg·L-1, respectively. The overall results showed that the incorporation route does not directly change the electrocatalytic effect of the nanoparticles, but the shape of these nanoparticles (spherical for seeds and triangular for prisms) has preferential electrocatalytic enhancement over Cd(II) or Pb(II)Postprint (published version
Fe-MOF Materials as Precursors for the Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Isobutane.
We investigate the use of a series of iron-based metal-organic frameworks as precursors for the manufacturing of isobutane dehydrogenation catalysts. Both the as-prepared and spent catalysts were characterized by PXRD, XPS, PDF, ICP-OES, and CHNS+O to determine the physicochemical properties of the materials and the active phases responsible for the catalytic activity. In contrast to the previous literature, our results indicate that (i) the formation of metallic Fe under reaction conditions results in secondary cracking and coke formation; (ii) the formation of iron carbide only contributes to coke formation; and (iii) the stabilization of the Fe2+ species is paramount to achieve stable and selective catalysts. In this sense, promotion with potassium and incorporation of titanium improve the catalytic performance. While potassium is well known to improve the selectivity in iron-catalyzed dehydrogenation reactions, the unprecedented effect of titanium in the stabilization of a nanometric titanomaghemite phase, even under reductive reaction conditions, results in a moderately active and highly selective catalyst for several hours on stream with a remarkable resistance to coke formation
Enterococcal meningitis caused by Enterococcus casseliflavus. First case report
BACKGROUND: Enterococcal meningitis is an uncommon disease usually caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium and is associated with a high mortality rate. Enterococcus casseliflavus has been implicated in a wide variety of infections in humans, but never in meningitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old Italian female presented for evaluation of fever, stupor, diarrhea and vomiting of 3 days duration. There was no history of head injury nor of previous surgical procedures. She had been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years, for which she was being treated with steroids and methotrexate. On admission, she was febrile, alert but not oriented to time and place. Her neck was stiff, and she had a positive Kernig's sign. The patient's cerebrospinal fluid was opalescent with a glucose concentration of 14 mg/dl, a protein level of 472 mg/dl, and a white cell count of 200/μL with 95% polymorphonuclear leukocytes and 5% lymphocytes. Gram staining of CSF revealed no organisms, culture yielded E. casseliflavus. The patient was successfully treated with meropenem and ampicillin-sulbactam. CONCLUSIONS: E. casseliflavus can be inserted among the etiologic agents of meningitis. Awareness of infection of central nervous system with Enterococcus species that possess an intrinsic vancomycin resistance should be increased
Improving the in silico assessment of pathogenicity for compensated variants
Understanding the functional sequelae of amino-acid replacements is of fundamental importance in medical genetics. Perhaps, the most intuitive way to assess the potential pathogenicity of a given human missense variant is by measuring the degree of evolutionary conservation of the substituted amino-acid residue, a feature that generally serves as a good proxy metric for the functional/structural importance of that residue. However, the presence of putatively compensated variants as the wild-type alleles in orthologous proteins of other mammalian species not only challenges this classical view of amino-acid essentiality but also precludes the accurate evaluation of the functional impact of this type of missense variant using currently available bioinformatic prediction tools. Compensated variants constitute at least 4% of all known missense variants causing human-inherited disease and hence represent an important potential source of error in that they are likely to be disproportionately misclassified as benign variants. The consequent under-reporting of compensated variants is exacerbated in the context of next-generation sequencing where their inappropriate exclusion constitutes an unfortunate natural consequence of the filtering and prioritization of the very large number of variants generated. Here we demonstrate the reduced performance of currently available pathogenicity prediction tools when applied to compensated variants and propose an alternative machine-learning approach to assess likely pathogenicity for this particular type of variant
HTLV-1 infection in solid organ transplant donors and recipients in Spain
HTLV-1 infection is a neglected disease, despite infecting 10-15 million people worldwide and severe illnesses develop in 10% of carriers lifelong. Acknowledging a greater risk for developing HTLV-1 associated illnesses due to immunosuppression, screening is being widely considered in the transplantation setting. Herein, we report the experience with universal HTLV testing of donors and recipients of solid organ transplants in a survey conducted in Spain. All hospitals belonging to the Spanish HTLV network were invited to participate in the study. Briefly, HTLV antibody screening was performed retrospectively in all specimens collected from solid organ donors and recipients attended since the year 2008. A total of 5751 individuals were tested for HTLV antibodies at 8 sites. Donors represented 2312 (42.2%), of whom 17 (0.3%) were living kidney donors. The remaining 3439 (59.8%) were recipients. Spaniards represented nearly 80%. Overall, 9 individuals (0.16%) were initially reactive for HTLV antibodies. Six were donors and 3 were recipients. Using confirmatory tests, HTLV-1 could be confirmed in only two donors, one Spaniard and another from Colombia. Both kidneys of the Spaniard were inadvertently transplanted. Subacute myelopathy developed within 1 year in one recipient. The second recipient seroconverted for HTLV-1 but the kidney had to be removed soon due to rejection. Immunosuppression was stopped and 3 years later the patient remains in dialysis but otherwise asymptomatic. The rate of HTLV-1 is low but not negligible in donors/recipients of solid organ transplants in Spain. Universal HTLV screening should be recommended in all donor and recipients of solid organ transplantation in Spain. Evidence is overwhelming for very high virus transmission and increased risk along with the rapid development of subacute myelopathy
The economics of debt clearing mechanisms
We examine the evolution of decentralized clearinghouse mechanisms from the
13th to the 18th century; in particular, we explore the clearing of non- or
limitedtradable debts like bills of exchange. We construct a theoretical model
of these clearinghouse mechanisms, similar to the models in the theoretical
matching literature, and show that specific decentralized multilateral
clearing algorithms known as rescontre, skontrieren or virement des parties
used by merchants were efficient in specific historical contexts. We can
explain both the evolutionary self-organizing emergence of late medieval and
early modern fairs, and its robustness during the 17th and 18th century
