University Rankings: Evidence and a Conceptual Framework
University ranking has high public visibility, the ranking business has flourished, and institutions of higher education have not been able to ignore it. This study of university ranking presents general considerations of ranking and institutional responses to it, particularly considering reactions to ranking, ranking as a self-fulfilling prophecy, and ranking as a means of transforming qualities into quantities. The authors present a conceptual framework of university ranking based on three propositions and carry out a descriptive statistical analysis of U.S. and international ranking data to evaluate those propositions. The first proposition of university ranking is that ranking systems are demarcated by a high degree of stability, equilibrium, and path dependence. The second proposition links ranking to institutional identity. The third proposition posits that rankings function as a catalyst for institutional isomorphism. The conclusion reviews some important new developments in university ranking
A Deterioration in Hearing is Associated With Functional and Cognitive Impairments, Difficulty With Communication and Greater Health Instability
Objectives: To examine the relationship between hearing deterioration and several health-related outcomes among home care clients in Ontario. Design: Longitudinal analysis was completed for clients with at least two comprehensive assessments. Hearing status, based on a single item, ranged from zero (no impairment) to three (highly impaired). Hearing deterioration was defined as at least a 1-point decline between subsequent assessments. Results: Seven percent experienced a 1-point deterioration in hearing and roughly 1% had a 2/3-point decline. After adjusting for other covariates, increasing age (odds ratio = 1.94; 95% confidence intervals [CIs] = [1.45, 2.61]) and a diagnosis of Alzheimer\u27s disease (1.37; CI = [1.04, 1.80]) and other dementias (1.32; CI = [1.07, 1.63]) increased the risk of a 2/3-point deterioration. Conclusion: These findings can assist home care professionals and policy makers in creating and refining interventions to meet the needs of older adults with hearing difficulties

The Spatial Properties of L- and M-Cone Inputs to Electroretinograms That Reflect Different Types of Post-Receptoral Processing
yesWe studied the spatial arrangement of L- and M-cone driven electroretinograms (ERGs) reflecting
the activity of magno- and parvocellular pathways. L- and M-cone isolating sine
wave stimuli were created with a four primary LED stimulator using triple silent substitution
paradigms. Temporal frequencies were 8 and 12 Hz, to reflect cone opponent activity, and
30, 36 and 48 Hz to reflect luminance activity. The responses were measured for full-field
stimuli and for different circular and annular stimuli. The ERG data confirm the presence of
two different mechanisms at intermediate and high temporal frequencies. The responses
measured at high temporal frequencies strongly depended upon spatial stimulus configuration.
In the full-field conditions, the L-cone driven responses were substantially larger than
the full-field M-cone driven responses and also than the L-cone driven responses with
smaller stimuli. The M-cone driven responses at full-field and with 70° diameter stimuli displayed
similar amplitudes. The L- and M-cone driven responses measured at 8 and 12 Hz
were of similar amplitude and approximately in counter-phase. The amplitudes were constant
for most stimulus configurations. The results indicate that, when the ERG reflects luminance
activity, it is positively correlated with stimulus size. Beyond 35° retinal eccentricity,
the retina mainly contains L-cones. Small stimuli are sufficient to obtain maximal ERGs at
low temporal frequencies where the ERGs are also sensitive to cone-opponent processin
Combined Impairments in Vision, Hearing and Cognition are Associated with Greater Levels of Functional and Communication Difficulties Than Cognitive Impairment Alone: Analysis of interRAI Data for Home Care and Long-Term Care Recipients in Ontario
Objectives: The objective of the current study was to understand the added effects of having a sensory impairment (vision and/or hearing impairment) in combination with cognitive impairment with respect to health-related outcomes among older adults (65+ years old) receiving home care or residing in a long-term care (LTC) facility in Ontario, Canada.
Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using existing data collected with one of two interRAI assessments, one for home care (n = 291,824) and one for LTC (n = 110,578). Items in the assessments were used to identify clients with single sensory impairments (e.g., vision only [VI], hearing only [HI]), dual sensory impairment (DSI; i.e., vision and hearing) and those with cognitive impairment (CI). We defined seven mutually exclusive groups based on the presence of single or combined impairments.
Results: The rate of people having all three impairments (i.e., CI+DSI) was 21.3% in home care and 29.2% in LTC. Across the seven groups, individuals with all three impairments were the most likely to report loneliness, to have a reduction in social engagement, and to experience reduced independence in their activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs (IADLs). Communication challenges were highly prevalent in this group, at 38.0% in home care and 49.2% in LTC. In both care settings, communication difficulties were more common in the CI+DSI group versus the CI-alone group.
Conclusions: The presence of combined sensory and cognitive impairments is high among older adults in these two care settings and having all three impairments is associated with higher rates of negative outcomes than the rates for those having CI alone. There is a rising imperative for all health care professionals to recognize the potential presence of hearing, vision and cognitive impairments in those for whom they provide care, to ensure that basic screening occurs and to use those results to inform care plans
Development and evaluation of ofloxacin orally disintegrating tablets
Bitter taste of ofloxacin, a broad spectrum bactericidal agent, is masked and orally disintegrating tablets were formulated. The bitter taste is masked by forming complex between drug and weak cation exchange resins, Tulsion 335 and Indion 204. Effect of pH and drug:resin ratio on the drug loading was studied. Maximum drug loading was observed at pH 6. Ratio of 1:2 of drug:resin masked almost complete bitterness of ofloxacin. Formation of complexes was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. Physical characterization of taste masked complexes was carried out. Present work envisages the taste masking of ofloxacin and development of orally disintegrating tablets. The effect of pH and resin quantities on drug loading were studied to find the optimum conditions of drug loading for complete taste masking. Effect of superdisintegrants like sodium starch glycolate, croscarmellose sodium and polyplasdone XL at varying level on physical parameters of compressed tablets was also assessed. The formulations containing 5 % w/w polyplasdone XL showed about 90 % of drug release within 5 minutes. No significant differences were observed in the physical parameters of resinates as well as tablets prepared from Tulsion 335 and Indion 204.O gosto amargo de ofloxacina, agente bactericida de largo espectro, é mascarado e formularam-se comprimidos dispersíveis. Efeito do pH e da proporção fármaco: resina sobre a carga de fármaco foi estudada. Carga de fármaco máxima foi observada em pH 6. Proporção 1:2 do fármaco: resina mascarou quase completamente o gosto amargo de ofloxacina. A formação de complexos foi confirmada por espectroscopia no IV. Caracterização física dos complexos de sabor mascarado foi realizada. O presente trabalho preconiza o mascaramento do gosto de ofloxacina e desenvolvimento decomprimidos por via oral, se desintegrando. O efeito do pH e da resina quantidades de carga de fármaco foram estudadas paraencontrar as condições óptimas de carga de fármaco para dissimulação do saborcompleto. Efeito da superdisintegrants como amido glicolato de sódio, croscarmelose sódica e Polyplasdone XL em diferentes níveis de parâmetros físicos de comprimidos também avaliados foi avaliada. As formulações contendo 5 %w/w Polyplasdone XL mostraram cerca de 90% de libertação do fármaco no prazo de 5 minutos. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas nos parâmetros físicos de resinatosbem como comprimidos preparados a partir de Tulsion 335 e Indion 204
Two refreshing views of Fluctuation Theorems through Kinematics Elements and Exponential Martingale
In the context of Markov evolution, we present two original approaches to
obtain Generalized Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorems (GFDT), by using the
language of stochastic derivatives and by using a family of exponential
martingales functionals. We show that GFDT are perturbative versions of
relations verified by these exponential martingales. Along the way, we prove
GFDT and Fluctuation Relations (FR) for general Markov processes, beyond the
usual proof for diffusion and pure jump processes. Finally, we relate the FR to

A study on the response of single and double circular plates subjected to localised blast loading
The response of single and double layered steel plates to localised air-blast loading was examined. Two configurations, both comprising fully clamped circular plates with a 200 mm exposed diameter, were considered: 4mm thick single and (2+2) mm double layered plates. The localised air-blast loading was applied by centrally detonating discs of PE4 plastic explosive. Similar failure modes were evident in the single and double plate configurations, namely, Mode I (large inelastic deformation) and Mode II (capping failure along with deformation) responses. The double plates exhibited larger midpoint deflections than the single plates, and partial tearing of the front plate in the double plates was observed at a lower impulse than in the single plates. However, complete capping of both plates in the double plate configuration occurred at the same charge mass as for the single plates, implying that both configurations offer equivalent protection from capping failure as a result of this type of localised blast loading. A metallographic study of the deformed and torn plate regions did not reveal any phase transformation in the steel. It was also found that the 2 mm thick plates exhibited larger increases in grain size than the 4 mm thick plates
Variability in ecosystem service measurement: A pollination service case study
Research quantifying ecosystem services (ES) - collectively, the benefits that society obtains from ecosystems - is rapidly increasing. Despite the seemingly straightforward definition, a wide variety of methods are used to measure ES. This methodological variability has largely been ignored, and standard protocols to select measures that capture ES provision have yet to be established. Furthermore, most published papers do not include explicit definitions of individual ES. We surveyed the literature on pollination ES to assess the range of measurement approaches, focusing on three essential steps: (1) definition of the ES, (2) identification of components contributing to ES delivery, and (3) selection of metrics to represent these components. We found considerable variation in how pollination as an ES - a relatively well-defined service - is measured. We discuss potential causes of this variability and provide suggestions to address this issue. Consistency in ES measurement, or a clear explanation of selected definitions and metrics, is critical to facilitate comparisons among studies and inform ecosystem management
