    Current and Emerging Technology for Powering Small Satellites with Secondary Cells and Batteries

    Gates Aerospace Batteries [GAB] is currently participating in the full range of small and large satellites with a variety of products from three electrochemical technologies of NiCd, NiMH and NiHz. In this presentation we discuss the role of small capacity cells [nominally 17 A-H and less] from those three electrochemical technologies. NiCd is of course the oldest technology. GAB\u27s Survivability Database contains a total of 117 spacecraft with approximately 644 Total Mission Years of successful NiCd performance without a recorded failure. We continue to update this technology with improved plate designs and non-nylon separators to improve both performance and survivability. Nickel-metal hydride [NiMH] is one emerging technology that appears amenable for powering small spacecraft. In this technology, we literally replace the cadmium or negative electrode from NiCd technology with the metal-hydride electrode to form this new electrochemical couple. NiMH technology provides a reduction in both weight and volume as compared to NiCd technology. NiHz Planar Technology is another emerging technology that appears amenable for powering small spacecraft. In this technology, GAB has combined the superior capability of the nickel-hydrogen electrochemistry with the simplicity and design heritage of the mature NiCd product line. Again, GAB\u27s success with this technology is based upon the expertise and heritage of the NiCd and NiHz programs

    Ince's limits for confluent and double-confluent Heun equations

    We find pairs of solutions to a differential equation which is obtained as a special limit of a generalized spheroidal wave equation (this is also known as confluent Heun equation). One solution in each pair is given by a series of hypergeometric functions and converges for any finite value of the independent variable zz, while the other is given by a series of modified Bessel functions and converges for ∣z∣>∣z0∣|z|>|z_{0}|, where z0z_{0} denotes a regular singularity. For short, the preceding limit is called Ince's limit after Ince who have used the same procedure to get the Mathieu equations from the Whittaker-Hill ones. We find as well that, when z0z_{0} tends to zero, the Ince limit of the generalized spheroidal wave equation turns out to be the Ince limit of a double-confluent Heun equation, for which solutions are provided. Finally, we show that the Schr\"odinger equation for inverse fourth and sixth-power potentials reduces to peculiar cases of the double-confluent Heun equation and its Ince's limit, respectively.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Mathmatical Physic

    Perturbative Computation of the Gluonic Effective Action via Polyaokov's World-Line Path Integral

    The Polyakov world-line path integral describing the propagation of gluon field quanta is constructed by employing the background gauge fixing method and is subsequently applied to analytically compute the divergent terms of the one (gluonic) loop effective action to fourth order in perturbation theory. The merits of the proposed approach is that, to a given order, it reduces to performing two integrations, one over a set of Grassmann and one over a set of Feynman-type parameters through which one manages to accomodate all Feynman diagrams entering the computation at once.Comment: 21 page

CP-odd, TnT_n-odd and TnT_n-even observables can both be used to extract information on the real and imaginary parts of Feynman amplitudes.     The BeppoSAX view of the hard X-ray background

    First results on a medium-deep X-ray survey in the "new" 5-10 keV band carried out with the MECS detectors onboard BeppoSAX are presented. The High Energy Llarge Area Survey (HELLAS) is aimed to directly explore a band where the energy density of the X-ray background is more than twice than that in the soft (0.5-2.0 keV) band. The optical identification follow-up of the first ten HELLAS hard X-ray sources indicate that Active Galactic Nuclei are the dominant population at 5-10 keV fluxes of the order of 10e-13 cgs.     Resonance fluorescence of a trapped three-level atom

    We investigate theoretically the spectrum of resonance fluorescence of a harmonically trapped atom, whose internal transitions are Λ\Lambda--shaped and driven at two-photon resonance by a pair of lasers, which cool the center--of--mass motion. For this configuration, photons are scattered only due to the mechanical effects of the quantum interaction between light and atom. We study the spectrum of emission in the final stage of laser--cooling, when the atomic center-of-mass dynamics is quantum mechanical and the size of the wave packet is much smaller than the laser wavelength (Lamb--Dicke limit). We use the spectral decomposition of the Liouville operator of the master equation for the atomic density matrix and apply second order perturbation theory. We find that the spectrum of resonance fluorescence is composed by two narrow sidebands -- the Stokes and anti-Stokes components of the scattered light -- while all other signals are in general orders of magnitude smaller. For very low temperatures, however, the Mollow--type inelastic component of the spectrum becomes visible. This exhibits novel features which allow further insight into the quantum dynamics of the system. We provide a physical model that interprets our results and discuss how one can recover temperature and cooling rate of the atom from the spectrum. The behaviour of the considered system is compared with the resonance fluorescence of a trapped atom whose internal transition consists of two-levels.Comment: 11 pages, 4 Figure

    Facultative Aestivation in a Tropical Freshwater Turtle Chelodina rugosa

    Abstract-1. Chelodina rugosa dug from aestivation sites at the end of the dry season were immediately alert and well coordinated. 2. Compared with non-aestivating animals, aestivating turtles had 20% higher plasma osmotic pressure and 7% higher sodium. Coupled with a small, but significant weight gain upon return to the water, this suggested the occurrence of minor dehydration in aestivating animals. 3. Plasma lactate levels of aestivating animals were low, averaging 1.99 mmol/1, consistent with aerobic rather than anaerobic metabolism having sustained their long period under ground. 4. No evidence was seen of dramatic physiological specialization. Aestivation in this species is interpreted as a primarily behavioural adaptation, made possible by typically reptilian abilities to tolerate a wide range in plasma electrolytes and to survive long periods without feeding

    Thermal conductivity of sand and its effect on the temperature of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) nests

    The conductivity of sand at a depth of 30–50 cm was measured at 15 sites on the beach at Captiva Island in south-west Florida which is used by nesting loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). The mean daily temperature of the sand was correlated with conductivity at the same depth measured the same day (r=0·611). When day to day variation was removed the correlation between nest temperature and conductivity increased to 0·694. The sand was highly variable in its grain structure. The dominant variability (80·6%) was redescribed by the first two principal components of a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). These two components were influenced mostly by percentages of large (> 1 mm) and small (< 500 μm) grains respectively. Conductivity was strongly correlated with the grain structure of the sand. The first three principal components describing sand grain structure, explained 84·1% of the variation in conductivity. Moisture content of the sand (always < 5%) was not an important factor. Sites dominated by larger grains generally had poorer conductivity and were cooler. Comparisons of eight nests to seven adjacent random sites revealed no strong evidence for directional selection in nest placement relative to sand conductivity. The variance in conductivities recorded at nests was also not significantly different from the variance at random sites

    Charged lepton electric dipole moments with the localized leptons and the new Higgs doublet in the two Higgs doublet model

    We study the lepton electric dipole moments in the split fermion scenario, in the two Higgs doublet model, where the new Higgs scalars are localized around the origin in the extra dimension, with the help of the localizer field. We observe that the numerical value of the electron (muon, tau) electric dipole moment is at the order of the magnitude of 10^{-31} (10^{-24}, 10^{-22}) (e-cm) and this quantity is sensitive the new Higgs localization in the extra dimension.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
