Determination of benzo[alpha]pyrene in Turkish döner kebab samples cooked with charcoal or gas fire

    Get PDF
peer-reviewedIn order to investigate the levels of the potent carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene (B(a)P), 40 samples of döner kebab were analysed. The samples tested included 20 cooked using a charcoal fire and 20 cooked using a gas fire. A liquid chromatographic method was developed using a fluorescence detector. The mean levels of B(a)P were found to be 24.2 (s.e. 0.84) g/kg for charcoal fire cooked meat samples and 5.7 (s.e. 3.48 g/kg) for gas fire cooked meat samples. Sixteen samples were found to be over the maximum level recommended by FAO/WHO (10 g/kg) and all of the samples exceeded the maximum tolerance level of the Turkish Food Codex (1 g/kg)

Monolithic read-out electronics for the silicon calorimeters at SSC/LHC colliders

Abstract A very fast monolithic charge sensitive preamplifier using HF2CMOS technology featuring less than 45mW power dissipation for a 5V maximum output voltage swing, with a slew rate about 700V/μsec for 150pF input capacitance (≈ 7nsec rise time), has been realized. A front-end set up for the read out of more detectors and the shaping of the signal with a 20nsec RC-CR filter employing only monolithic preamplifiers is described and tested. The measured value of ENC (Electronic Noise Charge) for the arrangement with 150pF input capacitance is 17keRMS. The preamplifier meets the requirements for silicon calorimetry application for experiments at the hadron colliders SSC/LHC

Late dead space fraction (fDlate) before and after pulmonary embolectomy

    Get PDF
This report presents data on the late dead space fraction (fDlate) of a patient submitted to surgical pulmonary embolectomy. Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) was diagnosed by echo-Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs, lung scintigraphy, computerized helical tomography and angiography. The fDlate was calculated based on volumetric capnography as well as on arterial blood gases according to ERIKSSON et al. [1]. The preoperative fDlate value was 0.16, which was considered positive for the diagnosis of PTE, as it was higher than the cut-off point of 0.12. The postoperative fDlate value was - 0.04, which was below 0.12 and was characterized as negative. The agreement of fDlate with the imaging results confirms the validity of this new, noninvasive diagnostic tool.

Vulvar Merkel Carcinoma: A Case Report

    Get PDF
This is a new case of Merkel cell carcinoma of the vulva. It is a rare neuroendocrine carcinoma with an aggressive behavior. Because of its rarity in this location, it is not clear whether it behaves differently from the usual neuroendocrine carcinomas of the skin. A case of a 63-year-old patient with vulvar Merkel carcinoma is presented. The clinical presentation, microscopic and immunohistochemical features, and treatment are discussed

Additive Manufacturing applications within food industry: An actual overview and future opportunities

    Get PDF
The food sector is one of the major economic sectors in Europe and beyond and produces nutrition for the world population. Food industry has a unique role in all countries economy as it is essential to people lives. In Europe it is the largest manufacturing sector in terms of value added, turnover and employment. On the other hand, several worldwide economic-social-technological trends are pushing organizations to embrace innovation as an integrated part of their corporate strategy, and to offer customized products tailored to market targets need. Embracing innovation became strategic in order to create a sustainable competitive advantage and to stay ahead of the competition in every industry, even in food one. Today, among all the most cutting-edge technologies, Additive Manufacturing (AM) has the potential to develop business paradigms to face an ever changing demand. AM comprises a group of technologies whose initial inception occurred over thirty years, characterized by a layer upon layer production directly from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data. Over the past few years AM development has increased exponentially and has expanded to include new areas of research. Within all the innovative applications, one of the most promising under respect of social impacts and progress, has proved to be the technological application in the food industry. This scientific work aims at finding out potential touching points between additive manufacturing technologies and food market, either consumer and industrial, focusing on the actual and future applications

A revised phytosociological nomenclature for the Italian Quercus cerris woods

    Get PDF
This paper aims to revise the phytosociological nomenclature of the Quercus cerris woods occurring in Italy with particular attention to associations, subassociations, and suballiances. The syntaxa included in this revision were selected based on a physiognomical criterion, i.e., woods with dominance or codominance of Quercus cerris. The nomenclatural revision complied with the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. Correct names and Authors' citations were considered for all the syntaxa analyzed (121), and, in most cases, other information about nomenclatural types, localities, synonyms, classification, and other notes was reported. As regards the alliance level, the correct application of the name Melittio albidae-Quercion frainetto ―whose original diagnosis and type-association occur in Italy― was discussed. In all, 31 syntaxon names were validated or described: two suballiances (Campanulo medii-Ostryenion carpinifoliae and Pulmonario apenninae-Carpinenion betuli), nine associations and 20 subassociations. Five lectotypes were also designated

Organizational, regulatory and legal aspects оf european integration of higher medical education in Ukraine: a critical review

    Get PDF
The aim: The main purpose of this research is to conduct the theoretical and applied study of the legal profile enforcement for state attestation of medical graduates, the relevant legislative system, and its effectiveness; to identify the issues of special legislative requirements, as well as the search for ways to resolve it. Materials and methods: Basic methods: analysis, synthesis and comparison. Object of research: system of state certification of graduates of medical sciences. Investigation of this topic in the paper is carried out in the following logical sequence: firstly, the basic principles of the state integrated qualification exam were determined and analyzed; then the legal enforcement for integrated state qualification exam of master’s degree in discipline “22 Health Care” was considered. Also, a critical review of Ukrainian normative base for holding the state attestation of medical graduates was conducted. Conclusions: In view of foregoing, we can make a conclusion that in the modern globalization world, competition of national educational services should be ensured by a range of different activities: legal, organizational, financial, etc. The legal direction, domestic rules should correspond to similar, uniform rules and practices of the most effective state (regional, international) systems
