Stable hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios of extractable hydrocarbons in the Murchison meteorite
A fairly fool-proof method to ensure that the compounds isolated from meteorites are truly part of the meteorites and not an artifact introduced by exposure to the terrestrial environment, storage, or handling is presented. The stable carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios in several of the chemical compounds extracted from the Murchison meteorite were measured. The results obtained by studying the amino acids in this meteorite gave very unusual hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios. The technique was extended to the different classes of hydrocarbons and the hydrocarbons were isolated using a variety of separation techniques. Are We Seeing Magnetic Axis Reorientation in the Crab and Vela Pulsars?
Variation in the angle between a pulsar's rotational and magnetic
axes would change the torque and spin-down rate. We show that sudden increases
in , coincident with glitches, could be responsible for the persistent
increases in spin-down rate that follow glitches in the Crab pulsar. Moreover,
changes in at a rate similar to that inferred for the Crab pulsar
account naturally for the very low braking index of the Vela pulsar. If
increases with time, all pulsar ages obtained from the conventional
braking model are underestimates. Decoupling of the neutron star liquid
interior from the external torque cannot account for Vela's low braking index.
Variations in the Crab's pulse profile due to changes in might be

Bodybuilders' accounts of synthol use: The construction of lay expertise online.
Synthol is an injectable oil used by bodybuilders to make muscles appear bigger. Widely available on the Internet, it is reported to carry a wide range of health risks and side effects such as localised skin problems, nerve damage and oil-filled cysts, as well as muscle damage and the development of scar tissue. Given the tension between health risk and quick muscle enlargement, how lay users explain and justify their synthol intake becomes an important question. Drawing on discourse analysis, we focus on how lay expertise is worked up by users in the absence of available specialist knowledge by invoking medical and pharmaceutical discourses as legitimation, providing novices with support, gaining trust through positive personal narratives and thus gaining credibility as experts. Results have clear implications for health promotion interventions with bodybuilders
r-modes in Relativistic Superfluid Stars
We discuss the modal properties of the -modes of relativistic superfluid
neutron stars, taking account of the entrainment effects between superfluids.
In this paper, the neutron stars are assumed to be filled with neutron and
proton superfluids and the strength of the entrainment effects between the
superfluids are represented by a single parameter . We find that the
basic properties of the -modes in a relativistic superfluid star are very
similar to those found for a Newtonian superfluid star. The -modes of a
relativistic superfluid star are split into two families, ordinary fluid-like
-modes (-mode) and superfluid-like -modes (-mode). The two
superfluids counter-move for the -modes, while they co-move for the
-modes. For the -modes, the quantity is
almost independent of the entrainment parameter , where and
are the azimuthal wave number and the oscillation frequency observed by an
inertial observer at spatial infinity, respectively. For the -modes, on
the other hand, almost linearly increases with increasing . It
is also found that the radiation driven instability due to the -modes is
much weaker than that of the -modes because the matter current associated
with the axial parity perturbations almost completely vanishes.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Physical Review
R-Modes in Superfluid Neutron Stars
The analogs of r-modes in superfluid neutron stars are studied here. These
modes, which are governed primarily by the Coriolis force, are identical to
their ordinary-fluid counterparts at the lowest order in the small
angular-velocity expansion used here. The equations that determine the next
order terms are derived and solved numerically for fairly realistic superfluid
neutron-star models. The damping of these modes by superfluid ``mutual
friction'' (which vanishes at the lowest order in this expansion) is found to
have a characteristic time-scale of about 10^4 s for the m=2 r-mode in a
``typical'' superfluid neutron-star model. This time-scale is far too long to
allow mutual friction to suppress the recently discovered gravitational
radiation driven instability in the r-modes. However, the strength of the
mutual friction damping depends very sensitively on the details of the
neutron-star core superfluid. A small fraction of the presently acceptable
range of superfluid models have characteristic mutual friction damping times
that are short enough (i.e. shorter than about 5 s) to suppress the
gravitational radiation driven instability completely.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
Zeta function method and repulsive Casimir forces for an unusual pair of plates at finite temperature
We apply the generalized zeta function method to compute the Casimir energy
and pressure between an unusual pair of parallel plates at finite temperature,
namely: a perfectly conducting plate and an infinitely permeable one. The high
and low temperature limits of these quantities are discussed; relationships
between high and low temperature limits are estabkished by means of a modified

Measurement of Rlt and Atl in the 4He(e,e'p)3H Reaction at pmiss of 130-300 MeV/c
We have measured the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at missing momenta of 130-300
MeV/c using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Data
were taken in perpendicular kinematics to allow us to determine the response
function Rlt and the asymmetry term Atl. The data are compared to both
relativistic and non-relativistic calculations.Comment: To be published in the European Physical Journal
Surface characterization and surface electronic structure of organic quasi-one-dimensional charge transfer salts
We have thoroughly characterized the surfaces of the organic charge-transfer
salts TTF-TCNQ and (TMTSF)2PF6 which are generally acknowledged as prototypical
examples of one-dimensional conductors. In particular x-ray induced
photoemission spectroscopy turns out to be a valuable non-destructive
diagnostic tool. We show that the observation of generic one-dimensional
signatures in photoemission spectra of the valence band close to the Fermi
level can be strongly affected by surface effects. Especially, great care must
be exercised taking evidence for an unusual one-dimensional many-body state
