    Sedimentological studies on the Ilha de Marchantaria an island in the Amazon river near Manaus reveal the existence of four different structural main units. A: Sandy channel bars consisting of giant ripples constitute deposits for the formation of islands or newly formed areas of the Varzea. B: Gradual accumulation on the channel bars leads to the formation of point bar ridges which consist chiefly of small-scale ripples. C: Between point bar ridges of different ages there exist swales. During rising water level the river water flows from the downward side into the swales where finegrained sediments are deposited. D: Permanent lakes are formed mainly in the centre of the islands. During low water periods the lakes may be cut of from the river. During high water periods when the whole island is flooded by the river, additional sedimentation takes place especially in the upstream area of the island. There is however, extensive erosion of the banks on the upstream side of the island. By erosion of the upstream end and sedimentation processes on the downstream end the island moves slowly downstream

    Over a period of 20 months the fish fauna distribution at Lago Camalcão, a floodplain lake of the Amazon near Manaus was studied. Special attention was given to the oxygen conditions. The lake was strongly defficient in oxygen for long periods, the surface oxygen concentrations during the day often being only about 0,5 g O2/l. Approximately 25.000 specimens were captured; 132 species belonging to 94 genera, 31 families and 10 orders were identified. About 40 species were able to live under extlemely low oxygen concentrations. 12 of these were air breathers. Another 8 are known to possess other morphological, anatomical and/or physiological adaptations to oxygen deficiency. It is presumed that the other species occurring in the area may have adaptations too. Survival strategies in respect to oxygen deficiency are discussed. It is suggested that the colonization of strongly oxygen deficient habitats reduces interspecific competition for food and diminishes predation pressure on the fish community, the total number of predatory fish species and specimens being much lower under low oxygen concentrations

    Fish Structure in Channel Networks of a Large Anabranching Floodplain: Effect of Isolation/Connection Processes

    Channel networks of floodplain rivers are the main routes for water, sediment, organic matter, and aquatic organisms between main channels and lakes, playing a substantial role in floodplain dynamics. Despite their importance most investigations in large floodplain rivers focus on main channels and lentic water bodies. This research deals with fish assemblage variations in different lotic sites (scour holes and straight reaches) of one of the many channels which shape the wide anabranching floodplain of the middle reach of the Paraná River. We considered the influence of environmental factors, such as hydro-geomorphological features and water quality of the channel, connections with surrounding lentic water bodies, seasonality, and interannual flow variations. The results showed two main ecological patterns closely related to floodplain connectivity. In-channel habitat heterogeneity has low influence on fish assemblages when minor channels are connected to significant flooded areas (sampling period 2013–2016). Spatial or temporal predictions of fish structure during these stages are not easy due to the interaction of several environmental factors. However, during very low water levels (winter of 2018) most lentic areas become isolated from the nearby channel network, and floodplain fish are forced to move into the numerous scour holes of the floodplain channels where water conditions resemble those in lentic habitats. Our work highlights the importance of in-channel characteristics of floodplain river networks and their crucial role for fish conservation, particularly during very low water stages.Fil: Abrial, Elie.     The effects of climatic fluctuations and extreme events on running water ecosystems

    Most research on the effects of environmental change in freshwaters has focused on incremental changes in average conditions, rather than fluctuations or extreme events such as heatwaves, cold snaps, droughts, floods or wildfires, which may have even more profound consequences. Such events are commonly predicted to increase in frequency, intensity and duration with global climate change, with many systems being exposed to conditions with no recent historical precedent. We propose a mechanistic framework for predicting potential impacts of environmental fluctuations on running water ecosystems by scaling up effects of fluctuations from individuals to entire ecosystems. This framework requires integration of four key components: effects of the environment on individual metabolism, metabolic and biomechanical constraints on fluctuating species interactions, assembly dynamics of local food webs and mapping the dynamics of the meta-community onto ecosystem function. We illustrate the framework by developing a mathematical model of environmental fluctuations on dynamically assembling food webs. We highlight (currently limited) empirical evidence for emerging insights and theoretical predictions. For example, widely supported predictions about the effects of environmental fluctuations are: high vulnerability of species with high per capita metabolic demands such as large-bodied ones at the top of food webs; simplification of food web network structure and impaired energetic transfer efficiency; reduced resilience and top-down relative to bottom-up regulation of food web and ecosystem processes. We conclude by identifying key questions and challenges that need to be addressed to develop more accurate and predictive bio-assessments of the effects of fluctuations, and implications of fluctuations for management practices in an increasingly uncertain world

    3d-4f heterometallic complexes by the reduction of transition metal carbonyls with bulky LnII^{II} amidinates

    The redox chemistry between divalent lanthanide complexes bearing bulky amidinate ligands has been studied with 3d transition metal carbonyl complexes (iron and cobalt). The reaction of [(DippForm)2_{2}Smǁ^{ǁ}(thf)2_{2}] (DippForm = N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)formamidinate) with [Co2_{2}(CO)8_{8}] resulted in the formation of a tetranuclear Sm–Co complex, [{(DippForm)2_{2}Smǁǀ^{ǁǀ}(thf)}2_{2}{(μ-CO)2_{2}Co(CO)2_{2}}2_{2}]. The product of the reaction of [(DippForm)2_{2}Ybǁ^{ǁ}(thf)2_{2}] and [Co2_{2}(CO)8_{8}] gives the dinuclear Yb–Co complex [{(DippForm)2_{2}Ybǁǀ^{ǁǀ}(thf)}{(μ-CO)Co(CO)3_{3}}] in toluene. The reaction of [(DippForm)2_{2}Smǁ^{ǁ}(thf)2_{2}] was also carried with the neighbouring group 8 carbonyl complexes [Fe2_{2}(CO)9_{9}] and [Fe3_{3}(CO)12_{12}], resulting in a pentanuclear Smǁǀ^{ǁǀ}–Fe complex, [{(DippForm)2_{2}Smǁǀ^{ǁǀ}}2_{2}{(μ3_{3}-CO)2_{2}Fe2_{2}(CO)9_{9}}], featuring a triangular iron carbonyl cluster core

    Discovery potential of top-partners in a realistic composite Higgs model with early LHC data

    Composite Higgs models provide a natural, non-supersymmetric solution to the hierarchy problem. In these models, one or more sets of heavy top-partners are typically introduced. Some of these new quarks can be relatively light, with a mass of a few hundred GeV, and could be observed with the early LHC collision data expected to be collected during 2010. We analyse in detail the collider signatures that these new quarks can produce. We show that final states with two (same-sign) or three leptons are the most promising discovery channels. They can yield a 5 sigma excess over the Standard Model expectation already with the 2010 LHC collision data. Exotic quarks of charge 5/3 are a distinctive feature of this model. We present a new method to reconstruct their masses from their leptonic decay without relying on jets in the final state.Comment: 28 pages 11 Figures 7 Tables, minor changes, added references, matches published versio
