    Assessment of a standard ULS design procedure for offshore wind turbine sub-structures

    Sub-structures of offshore wind turbines are designed according to several design load cases (DLCs) that cover various fatigue (FLS) and ultimate limit states (ULS). The required DLCs are given in the current standards, and are supposed, on the one hand, to cover accurately all significant load conditions to guarantee reliability. On the other hand, they should include only necessary conditions to keep computing times manageable. For ULS conditions, the current work addresses the question whether the current design practice is, firstly, sufficient, and secondly, sensible concerning the computing time by only including necessary DLCs. To address this topic, data of five years of normal operation, simulated using a probabilistic approach, is used to extrapolate 20-year ULS loads (comparable to a probabilistic version of DLC 1.1 for substructures). These ULS values are compared to several deterministic DLCs required by current standards. Results show that probabilistic, extrapolated ULS values are fairly high and exceed standard DLC loads. Hence, the current design practice might not always be conservative. Especially, the benefit of an additional DLC for wave peak periods close to the eigenfrequency of the sub-structure is indicated

    Stability borders of feedback control of delayed measured systems

    When stabilization of unstable periodic orbits or fixed points by the method given by Ott, Grebogi and Yorke (OGY) has to be based on a measurement delayed by τ\tau orbit lengths, the performance of unmodified OGY method is expected to decline. For experimental considerations, it is desired to know the range of stability with minimal knowledge of the system. We find that unmodified OGY control fails beyond a maximal Ljapunov number of λmax=1+1τ\lambda_{max}=1+\frac{1}{\tau}. In this paper the area of stability is investigated both for OGY control of known fixed points and for difference control of unknown or inaccurately known fixed points. An estimated value of the control gain is given. Finally we outline what extensions have to be considered if one wants to stabilize fixed points with Ljapunov numbers above λmax\lambda_{max}.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX using revtex and epsfig (4 figs included).     Memory difference control of unknown unstable fixed points: Drifting parameter conditions and delayed measurement

    Difference control schemes for controlling unstable fixed points become important if the exact position of the fixed point is unavailable or moving due to drifting parameters. We propose a memory difference control method for stabilization of a priori unknown unstable fixed points by introducing a memory term. If the amplitude of the control applied in the previous time step is added to the present control signal, fixed points with arbitrary Lyapunov numbers can be controlled. This method is also extended to compensate arbitrary time steps of measurement delay.     Resonant forcing of select degrees of freedom of multidimensional chaotic map dynamics

    We study resonances of multidimensional chaotic map dynamics. We use the calculus of variations to determine the additive forcing function that induces the largest response, that is, the greatest deviation from the unperturbed dynamics. We include the additional constraint that only select degrees of freedom be forced, corresponding to a very general class of problems in which not all of the degrees of freedom in an experimental system are accessible to forcing. We find that certain Lagrange multipliers take on a fundamental physical role as the efficiency of the forcing function and the effective forcing experienced by the degrees of freedom which are not forced directly. Furthermore, we find that the product of the displacement of nearby trajectories and the effective total forcing function is a conserved quantity. We demonstrate the efficacy of this methodology with several examples.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Large-scale distributions of tropospheric nitric, formic, and acetic acids over the western Pacific basin during wintertime

    We report here measurements of the acidic gases nitric (HNO3), formic (HCOOH), and acetic (CH3COOH) over the western Pacific basin during the February-March 1994 Pacific Exploratory Mission-West (PEM-West B). These data were obtained aboard the NASA DC-8 research aircraft as it flew missions in the altitude range of 0.3–12.5 km over equatorial regions near Guam and then further westward encompassing the entire Pacific Rim arc. Aged marine air over the equatorial Pacific generally exhibited mixing ratios of acidic gases \u3c100 parts per trillion by volume (pptv). Near the Asian continent, discrete plumes encountered below 6 km altitude contained up to 8 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) HNO3 and 10 ppbv HCOOH and CH3COOH. Overall there was a general correlation between mixing ratios of acidic gases with those of CO, C2H2, and C2Cl4, indicative of emissions from combustion and industrial sources. The latitudinal distributions of HNO3 and CO showed that the largest mixing ratios were centered around 15°N, while HCOOH, CH3COOH, and C2Cl4 peaked at 25°N. The mixing ratios of HCOOH and CH3COOH were highly correlated (r2 = 0.87) below 6 km altitude, with a slope (0.89) characteristic of the nongrowing season at midlatitudes in the northern hemisphere. Above 6 km altitude, HCOOH and CH3COOH were marginally correlated (r2 = 0.50), and plumes well defined by CO, C2H2, and C2Cl4 were depleted in acidic gases, most likely due to scavenging during vertical transport of air masses through convective cloud systems over the Asian continent. In stratospheric air masses, HNO3 mixing ratios were several parts per billion by volume (ppbv), yielding relationships with O3 and N2O consistent with those previously reported for NOy

    An investigation of the chemistry of ship emission plumes during ITCT 2002

    A ship emission plume experiment was conducted about 100 km off the California coast during the NOAA Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation (ITCT) 2K2 airborne field campaign. Measurements of chemical species were made from the NOAA WP-3D aircraft in eight consecutive transects of a ship plume around midday during 2.5 hours of flight. The measured species include NOx, HNO3, peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN), SO2, H2SO4, O3, CO, CO2, nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), and particle number and size distributions. Observations demonstrate a NOx lifetime of ∼1.8 hours inside the ship plume compared to ∼6.5 hours (at noontime) in the moderately polluted background marine boundary layer of the experiment. This confirms the earlier hypothesis of highly enhanced in-plume NOx destruction. Consequently, one would expect the impact of ship emissions is much less severe than those predicted by global models that do not include rapid NOx destruction. Photochemical model calculations suggest that more than 80% of the NOx loss was due to the NO2 + OH reaction; the remainder was by PAN formation. The model underestimated in-plume NOx loss rate by about 30%. In addition, a comparison of measured to predicted H2SO4 in the plumes suggests that the photochemical model predicts OH variability reasonably well but may underestimate actual values. Predictions of in-plume O3 production agree well with the observations, suggesting that model-predicted peroxy radical (HO2 + RO2) levels are reasonable. The model estimated ozone production efficiency ranges from 6 to 30. The largest model bias was seen in the comparison with measured HNO3. The model overestimated in-plume HNO3 by about a factor of 6. This is most likely caused by underestimated HNO3 sinks possibly involving particle scavenging. However, limited data availability precluded a conclusive test of this possible loss process. Copyright 2005 by the American Geophysical Union

    Zusammenfassung: Einleitung: Miniaturisierte Herzunterstützungspumpen, sog. Kunstherzsysteme oder "ventricular assist devices" (VADs) bieten die Möglichkeit, diese Systeme im Kindesalter anzuwenden. Durch die lange Wartezeit auf ein geeignetes Spenderorgan sollte bei Kindern, unterstützt mit einem intrakorporealen VAD, die Entlassung nach Hause angestrebt werden. Schwerpunkte vor einem Spitalaustritt sind neben der adäquaten Schulung und Aufklärung des Patienten und deren Familie auch ein Ausbildungs- und Schulungskonzept für die lokalen Rettungskräfte und die Betreuungspersonen vor Ort. Methoden: Es wird ein auf die präklinische Versorgung abgestimmter Notfallalgorithmus für die Erstversorgung von VAD-Patienten vorgestellt sowie das gemeinsam erarbeitete Ausbildungskonzept der lokalen Rettungskräfte und des Kinderspitals Zürich. Schwerpunkte des Schulungsprogramms sind neben der theoretischen Einführung praktische Workshops, "cardiac arrest simulation training" (CAST) sowie die Erstellung eines genau definierten Alarmierungsplans unter Einbezug der lokalen ärztlichen Organisationsstrukturen und der Spezialisten des Kinderspitals.
