    Polarimetry of transneptunian objects (136472) Makemake and (90482) Orcus

    Context. We study the surface properties of transneptunian populations of Solar-system bodies. Aims. We investigate the surface characteristics of the dwarf planet (136472) Makemake and the resonant object (90482) Orcus. Methods. Using the FORS2 instrument of the ESO-VLT we have carried out linear polarisation measurements of Makemake and Orcus. Results. Polarisation of Orcus is similar to that of smaller size objects. The polarimetric properties of Makemake are very close to those of Eris and Pluto. We have not found any significant differences in the polarisation properties of objects from different dynamical classes. However, there are significant differences in polarisation of large and smaller size objects, and between large TNOs with water-ice and methane-ice dominated surfaces. Conclusions. We confirm the different types of polarisation phase behavior for the largest and smaller size TNOs. To explain subtle surface polarisation of Pluto, Makemake and Eris we assume that their surfaces are covered by a thin layer of hoarfrost masking the surface structure

    ASYMPTOTIC FLOCKING DYNAMICS FOR THE KINETIC CUCKER-SMALE MODEL

    In this paper, we analyse the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the continuous kinetic version of flocking by Cucker and Smale [16], which describes the collective behavior of an ensemble of organisms, animals or devices. This kinetic version introduced in [24] is here obtained starting from a Boltzmann-type equation. The large-time behavior of the distribution in phase space is subsequently studied by means of particle approximations and a stability property in distances between measures. A continuous analogue of the theorems of [16] is shown to hold for the solutions on the kinetic model. More precisely, the solutions will concentrate exponentially fast their velocity to their mean while in space they will converge towards a translational flocking solution

    Spatially Inhomogeneous Evolutionary Games

    We introduce and study a mean-field model for a system of spatially distributed players interacting through an evolutionary game driven by a replicator dynamics. Strategies evolve by a replicator dynamics influenced by the position and the interaction between different players and return a feedback on the velocity field guiding their motion. One of the main novelties of our approach concerns the description of the whole system, which can be represent-dimensional state space (pairs (x, σ) of position and distribution of strategies). We provide a Lagrangian and a Eulerian description of the evolution, and we prove their equivalence, together with existence, uniqueness, and stability of the solution. As a byproduct of the stability result, we also obtain convergence of the finite agents model to our mean-field formulation, when the number N of the players goes to infinity, and the initial discrete distribution of positions and strategies converge. To this aim we develop some basic functional analytic tools to deal with interaction dynamics and continuity equations in Banach spaces that could be of independent interest. © 2021 The Authors.     Accelerated Projected Gradient Method for Linear Inverse Problems with Sparsity Constraints

    Regularization of ill-posed linear inverse problems via â„“1\ell_1 penalization has been proposed for cases where the solution is known to be (almost) sparse. One way to obtain the minimizer of such an â„“1\ell_1 penalized functional is via an iterative soft-thresholding algorithm. We propose an alternative implementation to â„“1\ell_1-constraints, using a gradient method, with projection on â„“1\ell_1-balls. The corresponding algorithm uses again iterative soft-thresholding, now with a variable thresholding parameter. We also propose accelerated versions of this iterative method, using ingredients of the (linear) steepest descent method. We prove convergence in norm for one of these projected gradient methods, without and with acceleration.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures. v2: added reference, some amendments, 27 page

    Puzzling asteroid 21 Lutetia: our knowledge prior to the Rosetta fly-by

    A wide observational campaign was carried out in 2004-2009 aimed to complete the ground-based investigation of Lutetia prior to the Rosetta fly-by in July 2010. We have obtained BVRI photometric and V-band polarimetric measurements over a wide range of phase angles, and visible and infrared spectra in the 0.4-2.4 micron range. We analyzed them together with previously published data to retrieve information on Lutetia's surface properties. Values of lightcurve amplitudes, absolute magnitude, opposition effect, phase coefficient and BVRI colors of Lutetia surface seen at near pole-on aspect have been determined. We defined more precisely parameters of polarization phase curve and showed their distinct deviation from any other moderate-albedo asteroid. An indication of possible variations both in polarization and spectral data across the asteroid surface was found. To explain features found by different techniques we propose that (i) Lutetia has a non-convex shape, probably due to the presence of a large crater, and heterogeneous surface properties probably related to surface morphology; (ii) at least part of the surface is covered by a fine-grained regolith with particle size less than 20 microns; (iii) the closest meteorite analogues of Lutetia's surface composition are particular types of carbonaceous chondrites or Lutetia has specific surface composition not representative among studied meteorites

    A methodology for the assessment of experiential learning lean: The lean experience factory case study

    Purpose \u2013 The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology to assess the experiential learning processes of learning lean in an innovative learning environment: the lean model factories. Design/methodology/approach \u2013 A literature review on learning and lean management literatures was carried out to design the methodology. Then, a case study methodology was used to test the framework. Findings \u2013 The methodology permitted to asses learning processes and course contents of educational dynamics carried out in model factories and to theoretically ground such learning processes. The test showed that learning lean management is supported through a complete coverage of the eight phases of the learning path. Research limitations/implications \u2013 The methodology contributes to the literatures of lean management and experiential learning, proposing a methodology of assessment. Part of the framework could also be applied to other disciplines. Practical implications \u2013 The methodology could be used for two purposes: to design training courses or to assess existing experiential learning courses. Originality/value \u2013 Due to its intrinsic complexity, learning literature presents few practical framework or tools. Among them, none have provided practical and theoretical-based advice on how to use experiential learning precepts to teach lean managemen

    Early Effects of No-Till Use on Durum Wheat (Triticum durum Desf.): Productivity and Soil Functioning Vary between Two Contrasting Mediterranean Soils

    The diffusion of no-tillage (NT) is to be encouraged because of the benefits it can provide in terms of improving soil fertility and counteracting global warming and climate change as part of climate-smart agriculture practices. However, the introduction of this management can be difficult, especially in the first years of application, and can lead to unpredictable yield results depending on the soil type. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to evaluate the early effect of NT use, compared to the conventional mouldboard ploughing (CT), on two different soils, a clay-loam (GAL) and a sandy-clay-loam soil (SMA), by monitoring a set of 43 different soil and plant variables that were expected to vary with tillage and/or soil type. At both experimental sites, NT showed lower wheat total biomass (−29%) and grain yields (−17%) than CT with a more pronounced decrease in GAL than in SMA. Yield differences were accompanied by modifications in nutrient, microbial community and soil enzyme activity dynamics which highlighted higher stress in GAL, than in SMA soil, attributable to lower crop residues decomposition and substrate availability. Therefore, our findings suggest that the negative consequences due to the transition to NT depend on specific soil characteristics, like texture and organic matter concentration, with different repercussions on soil quality as well as on wheat growth and productivity

    ESO Large Programme on Trans-Neptunian Objects and Centaurs: Spectroscopic Investigation of Centaur 2001 BL41 and TNOs (26181) 1996 GQ21 and (26375) 1999 DE9*

    Observational results that are part of an ESO Large Programme dedicated to the characterization of the physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects and Centaurs are presented. We report observations related to the Centaur 2001 BL41 and two trans-Neptunian objects, (26181) 1996 GQ21 and (26375) 1999 DE9. We present results from broadband photometry (JHK filters) and low-dispersion infrared spectroscopy performed with ISAAC at the Very Large Telescope, in Chile. None of the spectra show evidence of absorption features—in particular, water ice features. We use a radiative transfer model to investigate the surface composition of these icy and primitive outer solar system bodies. We suggest models composed of geographical mixtures of organic compounds and minerals

    JAK-Inhibitors for the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis : A Focus on the Present and an Outlook on the Future

    Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) belong to a new class of oral targeted disease-modifying drugs which have recently revolutionized the therapeutic panorama of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other immune-mediated diseases, placing alongside or even replacing conventional and biological drugs. JAKi are characterized by a novel mechanism of action, consisting of the intracellular interruption of the JAK-STAT pathway crucially involved in the immune response. The aim of this narrative review is to globally report the most relevant pharmacological features and clinical outcomes of the developed and incoming JAKi for RA, based on the available preclinical and clinical evidence. A total of 219 papers, including narrative and systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), observational studies, case reports, guidelines, and drug factsheets, were selected. The efficacy and safety profile of both the first generation JAKi (baricitinib and tofacitinib) and the second generation JAKi (upadacitinib, filgotinib, peficitinib, decernotinib and itacitinib) were compared and discussed. Results from RCTs and real-life data are encouraging and outline a rapid onset of the pharmacologic effects, which are maintained during the time. Their efficacy and safety profile are comparable or superior to those of biologic agents and JAKi proved to be efficacious when given as monotherapy. Finally, the manufacturing of JAKi is relatively easier and cheaper than that of biologics, thus increasing the number of compounds being formulated and tested for clinical use
