IR and UV Galaxies at z=0.6 -- Evolution of Dust Attenuation and Stellar Mass as Revealed by SWIRE and GALEX
We study dust attenuation and stellar mass of star-forming
galaxies using new SWIRE observations in IR and GALEX observations in UV. Two
samples are selected from the SWIRE and GALEX source catalogs in the
SWIRE/GALEX field ELAIS-N1-00 ( deg). The UV selected sample
has 600 galaxies with photometric redshift (hereafter photo-z) and NUV (corresponding to \rm L_{FUV} \geq 10^{9.6} L_\sun).
The IR selected sample contains 430 galaxies with mJy
(\rm L_{dust} \geq 10^{10.8} L_\sun) in the same photo-z range. It is found
that the mean ratios of the z=0.6 UV galaxies are
consistent with that of their z=0 counterparts of the same . For
IR galaxies, the mean ratios of the z=0.6 LIRGs (\rm
L_{dust} \sim 10^{11} L_\sun) are about a factor of 2 lower than local LIRGs,
whereas z=0.6 ULIRGs (\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{12} L_\sun) have the same mean
ratios as their local counterparts. This is consistent
with the hypothesis that the dominant component of LIRG population has changed
from large, gas rich spirals at z to major-mergers at z=0. The stellar
mass of z=0.6 UV galaxies of \rm L_{FUV} \leq 10^{10.2} L_\sun is about a
factor 2 less than their local counterparts of the same luminosity, indicating
growth of these galaxies. The mass of z=0.6 UV lunmous galaxies (UVLGs: \rm
L_{FUV} > 10^{10.2} L_\sun) and IR selected galaxies, which are nearly
exclusively LIRGs and ULIRGs, is the same as their local counterparts.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal

The Startle Disease Mutation E103K Impairs Activation of Human Homomeric α1 Glycine Receptors by Disrupting an Intersubunit Salt Bridge across the Agonist Binding Site
Glycine receptors (GlyR) belong to the pentameric ligand-gated ion channel (pLGIC) superfamily and mediate fast inhibitory transmission in the vertebrate CNS. Disruption of glycinergic transmission by inherited mutations produces startle disease in man. Many startle mutations are in GlyRs and provide useful clues to the function of the channel domains. E103K is one of few startle mutations found in the extracellular agonist binding site of the channel, in loop A of the principal side of the subunit interface. Homology modeling shows that the side chain of Glu-103 is close to that of Arg-131, in loop E of the complementary side of the binding site, and may form a salt bridge at the back of the binding site, constraining its size. We investigated this hypothesis in recombinant human α1 GlyR by site-directed mutagenesis and functional measurements of agonist efficacy and potency by whole cell patch clamp and single channel recording. Despite its position near the binding site, E103K causes hyperekplexia by impairing the efficacy of glycine, its ability to gate the channel once bound, which is very high in wild type GlyR. Mutating Glu-103 and Arg-131 caused various degrees of loss-of-function in the action of glycine, whereas mutations in Arg-131 enhanced the efficacy of the slightly bigger partial agonist sarcosine (N-methylglycine). The effects of the single charge-swapping mutations of these two residues were largely rescued in the double mutant, supporting the possibility that they interact via a salt bridge that normally constrains the efficacy of larger agonist molecules
Impact of cigarette smoking on the relationship between body mass index and coronary heart disease: a pooled analysis of 3264 stroke and 2706 CHD events in 378579 individuals in the Asia Pacific region
BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of body mass index (BMI) and smoking are well established lifestyle risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. If these two risk factors have a synergistic relationship, rigorous lifestyle modification may contribute to greater reduction in cardiovascular burden than previously expected. METHODS: A pooled analysis of individual participant data from 38 cohorts, involving 378,579 participants. Hazards ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for BMI by cigarette smoking status were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 3.8 years, 2706 CHD and 3264 strokes were recorded. There was a log-linear, positive relationship of BMI with CHD and stroke in both smokers and non-smokers with evidence of a synergistic effect of smoking on the association between BMI and CHD only: HRs (95% CIs) associated with a 2 kg/m2 higher BMI were 1.13 (1.10-1.17) in current smokers and 1.09 (1.06-1.11) in non-smokers (p-value for interaction=0.04). CONCLUSION: Smoking amplifies the positive association between BMI and CHD but not stroke. If confirmed, these results suggest that effective strategies that target smoking cessation and weight loss are likely to have a greater impact than anticipated on reducing the burden of CHD.published_or_final_versio

High-Throughput In Vivo Analysis of Gene Expression in Caenorhabditis elegans
Using DNA sequences 5′ to open reading frames, we have constructed green fluorescent protein (GFP) fusions and generated spatial and temporal tissue expression profiles for 1,886 specific genes in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. This effort encompasses about 10% of all genes identified in this organism. GFP-expressing wild-type animals were analyzed at each stage of development from embryo to adult. We have identified 5′ DNA regions regulating expression at all developmental stages and in 38 different cell and tissue types in this organism. Among the regulatory regions identified are sequences that regulate expression in all cells, in specific tissues, in combinations of tissues, and in single cells. Most of the genes we have examined in C. elegans have human orthologs. Gaps in beliefs and practice in dyslipidaemia management in Japan, Germany, Colombia and the Philippines : insights from a web-based physician survey

Objectives: To understand physician beliefs and behaviour and identify uncertainties in dyslipidaemia management
across four world regions.
Methods: Web-based survey of 1758 physicians in Japan, Germany, Colombia and the Philippines who were
selected randomly from existing databases. Key inclusion criteria were 1) for cardiologists and diabetes/
endocrinology specialists: ≥50 dyslipidaemia patients examined in the last month; 2) for specialists in neurology/
neurosurgery/stroke medicine: ≥50 dyslipidaemia patients and ≥ 20 patients with a history of ischaemic stroke
examined in the last month; and 3) for specialists in nephrology and general medicine: based at centres with ≥20
beds and ≥ 50 dyslipidaemia patients examined in the last month. The self-report survey covered dyslipidaemia
management, target low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in different patient groups, and statin safety.
All physicians gave voluntary consent and all data were anonymised. Analysis was solely descriptive.
Results: The survey highlighted key areas of uncertainty in dyslipidaemia management in the four countries. These
related to LDL-C targets in different patient groups, the safety of low LDL-C levels, the safety of statins, especially
for effects on cognitive, renal and hepatic function and for haemorrhagic stroke risk, and lipid management
strategies in patients with chronic kidney disease, including those with concomitant hypertriglyceridaemia.
Conclusions: This survey of physicians in Japan, Germany, Colombia and the Philippines has identified key gaps in
knowledge about dyslipidaemia management. These relate to the safety of low LDL-C levels, the safety of statins,
and lipid management of chronic kidney disease. The findings from this survey highlight the need for further
education to improve the implementation of guideline recommendations for dyslipidaemia managemen
The unexpected resurgence of Weyl geometry in late 20-th century physics
Weyl's original scale geometry of 1918 ("purely infinitesimal geometry") was
withdrawn by its author from physical theorizing in the early 1920s. It had a
comeback in the last third of the 20th century in different contexts: scalar
tensor theories of gravity, foundations of gravity, foundations of quantum
mechanics, elementary particle physics, and cosmology. It seems that Weyl
geometry continues to offer an open research potential for the foundations of

CANDELS: The progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at z~2
We combine high-resolution HST/WFC3 images with multi-wavelength photometry
to track the evolution of structure and activity of massive (log(M*) > 10)
galaxies at redshifts z = 1.4 - 3 in two fields of the Cosmic Assembly
Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). We detect compact,
star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) whose number densities, masses, sizes, and star
formation rates qualify them as likely progenitors of compact, quiescent,
massive galaxies (cQGs) at z = 1.5 - 3. At z > 2 most cSFGs have specific
star-formation rates (sSFR = 10^-9 yr^-1) half that of typical, massive SFGs at
the same epoch, and host X-ray luminous AGN 30 times (~30%) more frequently.
These properties suggest that cSFGs are formed by gas-rich processes (mergers
or disk-instabilities) that induce a compact starburst and feed an AGN, which,
in turn, quench the star formation on dynamical timescales (few 10^8 yr). The
cSFGs are continuously being formed at z = 2 - 3 and fade to cQGs by z = 1.5.
After this epoch, cSFGs are rare, thereby truncating the formation of new cQGs.
Meanwhile, down to z = 1, existing cQGs continue to enlarge to match local QGs
in size, while less-gas-rich mergers and other secular mechanisms shepherd
(larger) SFGs as later arrivals to the red sequence. In summary, we propose two
evolutionary scenarios of QG formation: an early (z > 2), fast-formation path
of rapidly-quenched cSFGs that evolve into cQGs that later enlarge within the
quiescent phase, and a slow, late-arrival (z < 2) path for SFGs to form QGs
