Magnetic susceptibility of alkali-TCNQ salts and extended Hubbard models with bond order and charge density wave phases
The molar spin susceptibilities of Na-TCNQ, K-TCNQ and Rb-TCNQ(II)
are fit quantitatively to 450 K in terms of half-filled bands of three
one-dimensional Hubbard models with extended interactions using exact results
for finite systems. All three models have bond order wave (BOW) and charge
density wave (CDW) phases with boundary for nearest-neighbor
interaction and on-site repulsion . At high , all three salts have
regular stacks of anion radicals. The fits place Na and
K in the CDW phase and Rb(II) in the BOW phase with . The Na and
K salts have dimerized stacks at while Rb(II) has regular stacks at
100K. The analysis extends to dimerized stacks and to dimerization
fluctuations in Rb(II). The three models yield consistent values of ,
and transfer integrals for closely related stacks. Model
parameters based on are smaller than those from optical data that in
turn are considerably reduced by electronic polarization from quantum chemical
calculation of , and on adjacent ions. The
analysis shows that fully relaxed states have reduced model parameters compared
to optical or vibration spectra of dimerized or regular stacks.Comment: 9 pages and 5 figure
Digital Single-Cell Analysis of Plant Organ Development Using 3DCellAtlas
Diverse molecular networks underlying plant growth and development are rapidly being uncovered. Integrating these data into the spatial and temporal context of dynamic organ growth remains a technical challenge. We developed 3DCellAtlas, an integrative computational pipeline that semiautomatically identifies cell types and quantifies both 3D cellular anisotropy and reporter abundance at single-cell resolution across whole plant organs. Cell identification is no less than 97.8% accurate and does not require transgenic lineage markers or reference atlases. Cell positions within organs are defined using an internal indexing system generating cellular level organ atlases where data from multiple samples can be integrated. Using this approach, we quantified the organ-wide cell-type-specific 3D cellular anisotropy driving Arabidopsis thaliana hypocotyl elongation. The impact ethylene has on hypocotyl 3D cell anisotropy identified the preferential growth of endodermis in response to this hormone. The spatiotemporal dynamics of the endogenous DELLA protein RGA, expansin gene EXPA3, and cell expansion was quantified within distinct cell types of Arabidopsis roots. A significant regulatory relationship between RGA, EXPA3, and growth was present in the epidermis and endodermis. The use of single-cell analyses of plant development enables the dynamics of diverse regulatory networks to be integrated with 3D organ growth
Pairwise alignment incorporating dipeptide covariation
Motivation: Standard algorithms for pairwise protein sequence alignment make
the simplifying assumption that amino acid substitutions at neighboring sites
are uncorrelated. This assumption allows implementation of fast algorithms for
pairwise sequence alignment, but it ignores information that could conceivably
increase the power of remote homolog detection. We examine the validity of this
assumption by constructing extended substitution matrixes that encapsulate the
observed correlations between neighboring sites, by developing an efficient and
rigorous algorithm for pairwise protein sequence alignment that incorporates
these local substitution correlations, and by assessing the ability of this
algorithm to detect remote homologies. Results: Our analysis indicates that
local correlations between substitutions are not strong on the average.
Furthermore, incorporating local substitution correlations into pairwise
alignment did not lead to a statistically significant improvement in remote
homology detection. Therefore, the standard assumption that individual residues
within protein sequences evolve independently of neighboring positions appears
to be an efficient and appropriate approximation
Interaction and engagement with an anxiety management app: Analysis using large-Scale behavioral data
© Paul Matthews, Phil Topham, Praminda Caleb-Solly. Background: SAM (Self-help for Anxiety Management) is a mobile phone app that provides self-help for anxiety management. Launched in 2013, the app has achieved over one million downloads on the iOS and Android platform app stores. Key features of the app are anxiety monitoring, self-help techniques, and social support via a mobile forum (âthe Social Cloudâ). This paper presents unique insights into eMental health app usage patterns and explores user behaviors and usage of self-help techniques. Objective: The objective of our study was to investigate behavioral engagement and to establish discernible usage patterns of the app linked to the features of anxiety monitoring, ratings of self-help techniques, and social participation. Methods: We use data mining techniques on aggregate data obtained from 105,380 registered users of the appâs cloud services. Results: Engagement generally conformed to common mobile participation patterns with an inverted pyramid or âfunnelâ of engagement of increasing intensity. We further identified 4 distinct groups of behavioral engagement differentiated by levels of activity in anxiety monitoring and social feature usage. Anxiety levels among all monitoring users were markedly reduced in the first few days of usage with some bounce back effect thereafter. A small group of users demonstrated long-term anxiety reduction (using a robust measure), typically monitored for 12-110 days, with 10-30 discrete updates and showed low levels of social participation. Conclusions: The data supported our expectation of different usage patterns, given flexible user journeys, and varying commitment in an unstructured mobile phone usage setting. We nevertheless show an aggregate trend of reduction in self-reported anxiety across all minimally-engaged users, while noting that due to the anonymized dataset, we did not have information on users also enrolled in therapy or other intervention while using the app. We find several commonalities between these app-based behavioral patterns and traditional therapy engagement
Parenting practices and adolescent eating behaviors in African American families.
Parents play an important role in developing the eating behaviors of their children by adopting specific parenting practices. As the prevalence of obesity is high amongst African American adolescents, investigations into associations of specific parenting practices and adolescents' eating behaviors are essential. In this exploratory study, 14 African American parent-adolescent dyads were interviewed to characterize the influence of eight different parenting practices on the consumption of three main food categories (dairy, fruits and vegetables, and unhealthy snacks). The results revealed that authoritarian parenting practices were correlated with a higher BMI percentile in adolescents, whereas modeling and monitoring are correlated with a higher parent BMI. In addition, reasoning, monitoring, modeling, and authoritative parenting practices were associated with less unhealthy snack consumption among adolescents. Reasoning and monitoring were the only parenting practices associated with higher fruit and vegetable consumption. Finally, a significant correlation was found between eating fruits and vegetables and unhealthy snacks and the location of eating. In conclusion, different parenting practices and environmental factors may impact BMI and food consumption of African American dyads. The results of this study can be used to guide improvement in, and/or development of, nutritional education interventions considering the cultural differences of racial minorities
Seasonal Heat Acclimatisation in Healthy Adults:A Systematic Review
BACKGROUND: Physiological heat adaptations can be induced following various protocols that use either artificially controlled (i.e. acclimation) or naturally occurring (i.e. acclimatisation) environments. During the summer months in seasonal climates, adequate exposure to outdoor environmental heat stress should lead to transient seasonal heat acclimatisation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the systematic review was to assess the available literature and characterise seasonal heat acclimatisation during the summer months and identify key factors that influence the magnitude of adaptation. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: English language, full-text articles that assessed seasonal heat acclimatisation on the same sample of healthy adults a minimum of 3 months apart were included. DATA SOURCES: Studies were identified using first- and second-order search terms in the databases MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Scopus and Cochrane, with the last search taking place on 15 July 2021. RISK OF BIAS: Studies were independently assessed by two authors for the risk of bias using a modified version of the McMaster critical review form. DATA EXTRACTION: Data for the following outcome variables were extracted: participant age, sex, body mass, height, body fat percentage, maximal oxygen uptake, time spent exercising outdoors (i.e. intensity, duration, environmental conditions), heat response test (i.e. protocol, time between tests), core temperature, skin temperature, heart rate, whole-body sweat loss, whole-body and local sweat rate, sweat sodium concentration, skin blood flow and plasma volume changes. RESULTS: Twenty-nine studies were included in this systematic review, including 561 participants across eight countries with a mean summer daytime wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) of 24.9 °C (range: 19.5â29.8 °C). Two studies reported a reduction in resting core temperature (0.16 °C; pâ<â0.05), 11 reported an increased sweat rate (range: 0.03â0.53 L·h(â1); pâ<â0.05), two observed a reduced heart rate during a heat response test (range: 3â8 beats·min(â1); pâ<â0.05), and six noted a reduced sweat sodium concentration (range: ââ22 to ââ59%; pâ<â0.05) following summer. The adaptations were associated with a mean summer WBGT of 25.2 °C (range: 19.6â28.7 °C). LIMITATIONS: The available studies primarily focussed on healthy male adults and demonstrated large differences in the reporting of factors that influence the development of seasonal heat acclimatisation, namely, exposure time and duration, exercise task and environmental conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Seasonal heat acclimatisation is induced across various climates in healthy adults. The magnitude of adaptation is dependent on a combination of environmental and physical activity characteristics. Providing environmental conditions are conducive to adaptation, the duration and intensity of outdoor physical activity, along with the timing of exposures, can influence seasonal heat acclimatisation. Future research should ensure the documentation of these factors to allow for a better characterisation of seasonal heat acclimatisation. PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42020201883. Relationship between family racial/ethnic backgrounds, parenting practices and styles, and adolescent eating behaviors.
Obesity is more prevalent among racial minority children in the United States, as compared to White children. Parenting practices can impact the development of children's eating behaviors and habits. In this study, we investigated the relationships among racial/ethnic backgrounds, parenting practices and styles, and eating behaviors in adolescents. Fifty-one parent-adolescent dyads were interviewed to characterize parenting practices and styles, as well as the consumption of dairy, fruits and vegetables, and unhealthy snacks. Height and weight were measured to calculate parent BMI and adolescent BMI-for-age percentiles. Three parenting practice categories-modeling, authoritative, and authoritarian-were found to be related to race/ethnicity. A higher score in authoritarian parenting practices was related to higher BMI percentiles among African American adolescents, whereas a higher score in monitoring practices was related to lower BMI percentiles among non-Hispanic White adolescents. Modeling, reasoning, and monitoring led to higher consumption of fruits and vegetables among adolescents; however, the consumption of unhealthy snacks was higher with rule-setting and lower with reasoning and authoritative practices. Finally, an analysis of the relationships between environmental factors and snack intake showed that adolescents consumed significantly more unhealthy snacks when performing other activities while eating. In conclusion, the findings from this study suggest that families' racial heritages are related to their parenting practices, BMI percentiles, and their adolescents' food consumption and eating behaviors. The results of this study can be used to develop and improve adolescent nutrition education and interventions with consideration of their racial/ethnic backgrounds
Identifying chemokines as therapeutic targets in renal disease: Lessons from antagonist studies and knockout mice
Chemokines, in concert with cytokines and adhesion molecules, play multiple roles in local and systemic immune responses. In the kidney, the temporal and spatial expression of chemokines correlates with local renal damage and accumulation of chemokine receptor-bearing leukocytes. Chemokines play important roles in leukocyte trafficking and blocking chemokines can effectively reduce renal leukocyte recruitment and subsequent renal damage. However, recent data indicate that blocking chemokine or chemokine receptor activity in renal disease may also exacerbate renal inflammation under certain conditions. An increasing amount of data indicates additional roles of chemokines in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, which may adversively affect the outcome of interventional studies. This review summarizes available in vivo studies on the blockade of chemokines and chemokine receptors in kidney diseases, with a special focus on the therapeutic potential of anti-chemokine strategies, including potential side effects, in renal disease.
