Efficient Construction, Update and Downdate Of The Coefficients Of Interpolants Based On Polynomials Satisfying A Three-Term Recurrence Relation

In this paper, we consider methods to compute the coefficients of interpolants relative to a basis of polynomials satisfying a three-term recurrence relation. Two new algorithms are presented: the first constructs the coefficients of the interpolation incrementally and can be used to update the coefficients whenever a nodes is added to or removed from the interpolation. The second algorithm, which constructs the interpolation coefficients by decomposing the Vandermonde-like matrix iteratively, can not be used to update or downdate an interpolation, yet is more numerically stable than the first algorithm and is more efficient when the coefficients of multiple interpolations are to be computed over the same set of nodes.Comment: 18 pages, submitted to the Journal of Scientific Computing

Robust Padé approximation via SVD

Padé approximation is considered from the point of view of robust methods of numerical linear algebra, in particular the singular value decomposition. This leads to an algorithm for practical computation that bypasses most problems of solution of nearly-singular systems and spurious pole-zero pairs caused by rounding errors; a Matlab code is provided. The success of this algorithm suggests that there might be variants of Padé approximation that would be pointwise convergent as the degrees of the numerator and denominator increase to infinity, unlike traditional Padé approximants, which converge only in measure or capacity

Representing and Capturing the Experts´ Knowledge in a Design Process

An object-oriented framework to support the modeling and management of the design process is introduced. It naturally integrates the representation of both the design process itself, and the outcomes that are achieved as the result of the various design activities. The integral view of tracing that was adopted not only captures and manages the products being generated but also the activities that occurred, their associated context and the adopted decisions. The Version Administration System introduced in this paper provides an explicit mechanism to manage the different model versions being generated during the course of a design project as design activities are executed.Fil: Gonnet, Silvio Miguel. La anomia como clave para repensar el problema del orden social

En esta ponencia se sostiene que el problema del orden social en la teoría de Durkheim no sería necesariamente equiparable al problema de la cohesión, la integración y/o la regulación de la acción individual. A partir de un análisis de los planteos durkheimianos acerca de la anomia argumentamos que es posible reconstruir una concepción de orden que presenta un nivel de mayor generalidad en tanto se vincula con la delimitación de un orden de realidad irreductiblemente social. La hipótesis de lectura es que en este caso orden social se distingue de anomia y no de desorden, conflicto o desviación. En este sentido, es posible considerar que el problema del orden social, para el autor, remite a la demostración y justificación de ese orden específico de realidad. Así, el trabajo busca, por una parte, dar cuenta de una concepción de orden frecuentemente no reconocida en la teoría durkhemiana y, por la otra, poner en discusión la aparente univocidad con la que suele representarse al problema del orden social en la teoría sociológica.Fil: Gonnet, Juan Pablo.
