    Why 'scaffolding' is the wrong metaphor : the cognitive usefulness of mathematical representations.

    The metaphor of scaffolding has become current in discussions of the cognitive help we get from artefacts, environmental affordances and each other. Consideration of mathematical tools and representations indicates that in these cases at least (and plausibly for others), scaffolding is the wrong picture, because scaffolding in good order is immobile, temporary and crude. Mathematical representations can be manipulated, are not temporary structures to aid development, and are refined. Reflection on examples from elementary algebra indicates that Menary is on the right track with his ‘enculturation’ view of mathematical cognition. Moreover, these examples allow us to elaborate his remarks on the uniqueness of mathematical representations and their role in the emergence of new thoughts.Peer reviewe

    Three-Qubit Gate Realization Using Single Quantum Particle

    Using virtual spin formalism it is shown that a quantum particle with eight energy levels can store three qubits. The formalism allows to realize a universal set of quantum gates. Feasible formalism implementation is suggested which uses nuclear spin-7/2 as a storage medium and radio frequency pulses as the gates.     Quantum lattice gases and their invariants

    The one particle sector of the simplest one dimensional quantum lattice gas automaton has been observed to simulate both the (relativistic) Dirac and (nonrelativistic) Schroedinger equations, in different continuum limits. By analyzing the discrete analogues of plane waves in this sector we find conserved quantities corresponding to energy and momentum. We show that the Klein paradox obtains so that in some regimes the model must be considered to be relativistic and the negative energy modes interpreted as positive energy modes of antiparticles. With a formally similar approach--the Bethe ansatz--we find the evolution eigenfunctions in the two particle sector of the quantum lattice gas automaton and conclude by discussing consequences of these calculations and their extension to more particles, additional velocities, and higher dimensions.Comment: 19 pages, plain TeX, 11 PostScript figures included with epsf.tex (ignore the under/overfull \vbox error messages

    Exchange-correlation enhancement of the Lande-g* factor in integer quantized Hall plateaus

    We study the emergent role of many-body effects on a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) within the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson approximation, including both the exchange and correlation interactions in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field. It is shown that, the indirect interactions widen the odd-integer incompressible strips spatially, whereas the even-integer filling factors almost remain unaffected.Comment: 8 pages,4 figure

    Local safety of immediate reconstruction during primary treatment of breast cancer : direct-to-implant versus expander-based surgery

    Introduction: After mastectomy, immediate breast reconstruction is paramount. With the growing number of nipple-sparing mastectomies, the chances of successful one-stage reconstruction with implants are also increasing. Local safety is one of the main issues. This study investigated the factors that could lead to major or minor complications after expander-based versus direct-to-implant (DTI) reconstruction. Methods: The studied factors were age, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, smoking, diabetes, type of mastectomy (nipple-sparing/total), implant size, neoadjuvant/adjuvant chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. The study sample included 294 immediate reconstructions over 3 years. The primary outcome was the incidence of complications, major or minor depending on the necessity of revision surgery. For the DTI pocket, we applied a variant of the conventional submuscular technique. Results: In DTI reconstructions (median follow-up 26 months), the complication rate was 17.2% (4.3% major and 12.8% minor) with no significant association with clinical variables. In expander-based reconstructions (median follow-up 19 months), the complication rate was 18.3% (12.5% major and 5.8% minor). Univariate analysis showed a significant association between overall complications and radiotherapy (P = 0.01) as well as between major complications and expander size (P < 0.005), BMI (P < 0.005), and radiotherapy (P < 0.01); radiotherapy and BMI retained significance in multivariate analysis. Neoadjuvant/adjuvant chemotherapy did not affect the complication rate. Conclusions: There was evidence of an association between major complications and clinical variables in the expander-based cohort. Larger expander size was a predictor of failure, especially combined with radiation. Direct-to-implant reconstruction proved to be safe. We describe a reliable method of reconstruction and a safe range of implant sizes even beyond 500 g

    AI-based Ecological Monitoring of Handwriting to Early Detect Cognitive Decline

    The early detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is fundamental to initiate treatments for delaying the onset of dementia. Currently, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is one of the most common clinical scales used by geriatricians to assess cognitive function. A deviation of 1 to 3 points from the maximum score (30) is considered as sign of relevant cognitive decline. However, objective and affordable tools are needed to complement the screening process. The quantitative analysis of handwriting represents a suitable solution, as the gesture is significantly impaired in MCI subjects in terms of time, speed, fluency and applied pressure. This works presents the development and testing of classification models able to separate subjects at risk of cognitive decline (MMSE &lt;= 28) from controls (MMSE &gt; 28), starting from free-content handwriting data acquired with a smart ink pen, used on paper, from which 36 indicators were computed. Data were collected in 2 phases. The former involved 45 subjects and served for models training. In the latter, data were acquired from 23 subjects in a domestic longitudinal framework and were partially used for model refinement, but mainly for testing. Three different algorithms were tried (support vector machine, random forest and Catboost) The best test performances on the longitudinal data were obtained by a Catboost classifier, achieving accuracy 93.33%, precision 88.89%, recall 100% and f1 score 94.12%. The results support the use of computerized handwriting analysis as screening tool for cognitive decline detection

    Density Functional Theory for the Photoionization Dynamics of Uracil

    Photoionization dynamics of the RNA base Uracil is studied in the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT). The photoionization calculations take advantage of a newly developed parallel version of a multicentric approach to the calculation of the electronic continuum spectrum which uses a set of B-spline radial basis functions and a Kohn-Sham density functional hamiltonian. Both valence and core ionizations are considered. Scattering resonances in selected single-particle ionization channels are classified by the symmetry of the resonant state and the peak energy position in the photoelectron kinetic energy scale; the present results highlight once more the site specificity of core ionization processes. We further suggest that the resonant structures previously characterized in low-energy electron collision experiments are partly shifted below threshold by the photoionization processes. A critical evaluation of the theoretical results providing a guide for future experimental work on similar biosystems

    Sex disparities in efficacy in covid-19 vaccines: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Sex differences in adaptive and innate immune responses have been shown to occur and anecdotal reports suggest that vaccine efficacy and safety may be sex-dependent. We investigated the influence of sex on the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines through a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials on COVID-19 vaccines. The safety profile of COVID-19 vaccines was also investigated. A systematic review included eligible articles published in three databases and three websites. A meta-analysis of available data, stratified by sex, was conducted. Statistical analysis was performed using the Hartung\u2013Knapp\u2013Sidik\u2013Jonkman method, as well as influence and heterogeneity analysis. Pooled analysis showed significantly higher efficacy, measured as the rate of new COVID-19 cases, in men compared to women in the vaccine group (OR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.48\u20130.94). No sex differences were found in the rate of new cases in the control group (OR = 0.92, 95% CI 0.78\u20131.09). Safety profiles derived from pharmacovigilance reports appear to indicate increased toxicity in women. In conclusion, evidence of a potential role of sex in COVID-19 vaccine efficacy was described. It strengthens the need to include sex as a core variable in the clinical trial design of COVID-19 vaccines
