El artículo repasa las recientes contribuciones italianas al estudio de la historia moderna. Tras una crítica en torno a aproximaciones historiograficas similares, el autor analiza los estudios según su cronología. Destaca como aspectos más característicos el interés modernista por buscar una conexión profunda con las dinámicas medievales; la vitalidad de los estudios de historia religiosa del siglo XVI; la compartimentación geográfica de los grupos de investigación en general, y la revisión de la obra de Franco Venturi sobre el siglo XVIII.L'article fa un repàs sobre les recents contribucions italianes a l'estudi de la historia moderna. Després d'una crítica al voltant d'aproximacions historiogràfiques semblants, l'autor analitza el estudis segons llur cronologia. Destaca com aspectes més caracteristics l'interès modernista per cercar una connexió mes important amb les dinàmiques medievals; la vitalitat dels estudis d'historia religiosa del segle XVI; la compartimentació geogràfica dels grups d'investigació en general, i la revisió de I'obra de Franco Venturi sobre el segle XVIII.This article reviews rec.ent Italian contributions to the study of Modern History. After some critique about similar historiographical approaches, the works are analysed by the author according to its chronology. The most characteristic aspects he highlights are the modemist interest in searching a profound connection with medieval dynamics; the presentness of studies on 16th century religious history; the geographic segmentation of research groups in general; and the reconsideration of Franco Venturi's works about the 18th century

The persistence of tradition the economists in the law faculties and in the higher institutes of business studies

The economists in the Italian universities formed influential schools which produced the country’s elites. An examination of the relationship between these schools and fascism reveals a varied, complex picture, quite apart from the single economists’ varying degrees of support for the regime’s ideology. Despite the particular features due to fascism, the development of the Italian system of university education did not differ from that in other European countries. The investigation conducted in this chapter on the universities’ transition from the liberal era to the fascist age enables us to give a description of the salient episodes marking the relationship between the economists and the regime. The reconstruction of the institutional and theoretical aspects, accompanied by a careful study of the political and social context, forms the basis for an attempted interpretation of the history of Italy between the two world war

Italy is well known for its prominent economists, as well as for the typical public profile they have constantly revealed. But, when facing an illiberal and totalitarian regime, how closely did Italian economists collaborate with government in shaping its economic and political institutions, or work independently? This edited book completes a gap in the history of Italian economic thought by providing a complete work on the crucial link between economics and the Fascist regime, covering the history of political economy in Italy during the so-called “Ventennio” (1922-1943) with an institutional perspective. The approach is threefold: analysis of the academic and extra-academic scene, where economic science was elaborated and taught, the connection between economics, society and politics, and, dissemination of scientific debate. Special attention is given to the bias caused by the Fascist regime to economic debate and careers. This Volume I deals with the economics profession under Fascism, in particular in light of the political and institutional changes that the regime introduced, the restructuring of higher education, the restriction of freedom in teaching and of the press, and with respect to promoting its own strategies of political and ideological propaganda
