Electrothermal liquid motion in microsystems subjected to alternating and rotating electric fields

    No full text
Electrothermal motion in an aqueous solution appears when an electric field is coupled with thermally-induced gradients of conductivity and permittivity in the fluid. The temperature field can be produced by external sources, such as strong illumination, or caused by the applied electric field through Joule heating. Electrothermal flow in microsystems is usually important at frequencies around 1 MHz and voltages around. 10 V. In this work, we consider first the two-dimensional problem of an aqueous solution placed on top of two co-planar electrodes that are subjected to an ac potential difference when there is either a vertical or horizontal temperature gradient. Secondly, we study the three-dimensional problem of an aqueous solution lying on four co-planar electrodes which produce a rotating field. This electric field when combined with a vertical temperature gradient rotates the liquid. The resulting electric field an liquid motion in these problems are characterised using self-similar solutions. Finally, these analytical solutions are compared with numerical and experimental results

Over the past few decades many different Information Technologies (IT) policies have been introduced, including COSO, ITIL, PMBook, CMM,ISO 2700x, Six Sigma, being COBIT IT (Control Objectives for IT) the framework that encompasses all IT and Information Systems (IS) governance activities at the organization’s level. As part of the applicability of quality services certification (ISO 9001) in all IT services of a public institution, it is presented a case study aimed at planning, managing and monitoring technological security infrastructures. It followed the guidelines for the ISO 2700x family, COBIT, ITIL and other standards and conducted a survey to complement the IT process’s objectives. With regard to an action-research methodology for problem-solving (i.e., a kind of attempt to improve or investigate practice) and according to the issue under analyze, the question is put into the terms, viz. “How can the ISO 2700x, COBIT, ITIL and other guidelines help with the planning, management and monitoring of technological security infrastructures and minimize the risk management of IT and IS?”. Indeed, it may be resolved that it is possible to achieve the goals of planning, managing and monitoring a technological security infrastructure. In the future, we will use Artificial Intelligence based approaches to problem solving such as Artificial Neural Networks and Cased Based Reasoning, to evaluate this issue

Experimental analysis of drainage and water storage of litter layers

International audienceMany hydrological studies of forested ecosystems focus on the study of the forest canopy and have partitioned gross precipitation into throughfall and stemflow. However, the presence of forest litter can alter the quantities of water available for soil infiltration and runoff. Little information exists regarding the value of storage and drainage parameters for litter layers. Vegetation parameters of this kind are required in physically-based and lumped conceptual models to quatify the availabilty and distribution of water. Using a rainfall simulator and laboratory conditions two main objectives were investigated using layers of recently seneced poplar leaves, fresh grass or woodchips: 1) Effect of rain intensity on storage. With this respect we found that: maximum storage (Cmax), defined as the detention of water immediately before rainfall cessation, increased with rainfall intensity. The magnitude of the increment was up to 0.5 mm kg?1 m?2 between the lowest (9.8 mm h?1) and highest (70.9 mm h?1) rainfall intensities for poplar leaves. Minimum storage (Cmin), defined as the detention of water after drainage ceased, was not influenced by rainfall intensity. Repeated wetting-draining cycles or layer thickness have no effect on Cmax or Cmin. 2) The evaluation of drainage coefficient for the Rutter model. This model was found accurate to predict storage and drainage in the case of poplar leaves, was less accurate for fresh grass and resulted in overestimations for woodchips. Additionally, the effect of an underlaying soil matrix on lateral movement of water and storage of poplar leaves was studied. Results indicated that the soil matrix have no effect on Cmax or Cmin of the litter layer. Lateral movement of water in the poplar layer was observed at intermediate rainfall intensities (30.2 and 40.4 mm h?1), but not a the lowest or highest rates

Overcoming triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) resistance to oncolytic virotherapy by histone deacetylase inhibitor, trichostatin A

"Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a tumor classification that lack receptors for the hormones estrogen, progesterone and HER2 protein. These malignancies are characterized to be of poor prognosis, refractoriness to conventional therapy and high rates of recurrence. Virotherapy with oncolytic adenovirus (OAd) consists of cancer selective viruses that replicate, spread, and kill cancer cells by oncolysis, without affecting the normal cells."--Introduction

Accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics. Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics. © 2018 ESO.Context. The inner regions of the Galaxy are severely affected by extinction, which limits our capability to study the stellar populations present there. The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey has observed this zone at near-infrared wavelengths where reddening is highly diminished. Aims. By exploiting the high resolution and wide field-of-view of the VVV images we aim to produce a deep, homogeneous, and highly complete database of sources that cover the innermost regions of our Galaxy. Methods. To better deal with the high crowding in the surveyed areas, we have used point spread function (PSF)-fitting techniques to obtain a new photometry of the VVV images, in the ZY JHK s near-infrared filters available. Results. Our final catalogs contain close to one billion sources, with precise photometry in up to five near-infrared filters, and they are already being used to provide an unprecedented view of the inner Galactic stellar populations. We make these catalogs publicly available to the community. Our catalogs allow us to build the VVV giga-CMD, a series of color-magnitude diagrams of the inner regions of the Milky Way presented as supplementary videos. We provide a qualitative analysis of some representative CMDs of the inner regions of the Galaxy, and briefly mention some of the studies we have developed with this new dataset so far.Peer reviewe

OBJECTIVE - To assess the effect of diacerein on insulin secretion and metabolic control in drug-naïve patients with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out in 40 drug-naïve adult patients with type 2 diabetes. A metabolic profile including interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor-a, IL-6, and fasting insulin levelswas carried out before the intervention and 2months afterward. A hyperglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp technique was performed to assess the phases of insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity. After randomization, 20 patients received diacerein (50mg once daily) for the first 15 days and twice daily for 45 additional days. The remaining patients received placebo. Intra- and intergroup differences were calculated by Wilcoxon signed rank and Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS-Therewere significant increases in first (102 ± 63 vs. 130 ± 75 pmol/L; P<0.01), late (219 ± 111 vs. 280 ± 135 pmol/L; P<0.01), and total insulin (178691 vs. 216699pmol/L; P<0.01) secretionswithout changes in insulin sensitivity after diacerein administration. There were significant decreases in fasting glucose (7.9 ± 1.4 vs. 6.8 ± 1.0mmol/L; P<0.01) and in A1C levels (8.3 ± 1.0 vs. 7.0 ± 0.8%; P < 0.001) after diacerein administration. There were no significant changes after placebo administration in the above-mentioned evaluations. CONCLUSIONS - Insulin secretion increased and metabolic control improved after diacerein administration in drug-naïve patients with type 2 diabetes. © 2011 by the American Diabetes Association
