    Sudden cardiac death after robbery: Homicide or natural death?

    Tako-Tsubo is one of a number of rare acquired cardiomyopathies that are characterized by left ventricular dyskinesia and symptomatology typical of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The most important feature is that the clinical features are triggered by a severe physical or emotional stress. The authors describe the story of a woman, who was brutally assaulted by two men during a house robbery and died from sudden heart failure 8 hours later, after being taken to hospital. External examination revealed no macroscopic alteration of the inner organs, whereas microscopy showed contraction bands with myocardial necrosis, subendocardial and interstitial neutrophil infiltration and fibrosis. These findings were consistent with death due to stress cardiomyopathy even in the absence of previous heart disease. The robbers were convicted of homicide and sentenced to eighteen years in prison

    In-stent restenosis of superficial femoral artery: use all arrows in the quiver.

    In-stent restenosis (ISR) is a common superficial femoral artery (SFA) stenting complication, occurring in more than one third of patients within 2-3 years after the index procedure. Moreover, there is no standard treatment for ISR, and although many options are available, there is still limited data regarding its optimal management. We report a paradigmatic case report of a patient complaining of symptomatic peripheral arterial disease, underwent multiple endovascular revascularizations for recurrent femoro-popliteal ISR. A step-by-step approach was followed. At the time of the first presentation, the ISR was treated by drug-eluting balloon (DEB) angioplasty. The repeated ISR was treated by laser debulking, achieving a good angiographic result. Finally, after the third repeated restenosis, a combined approach with laser debulking and DEB angioplasty guaranteed a good acute angiographic result. Long-term duplex-scan follow-up demonstrated the good patency of the femoro-popliteal target lesion

    Study on lipid fractions of Streptococcus thermophilus by TLC, GC and GC/MS techniques

    In this research the lipid fraction of two strains of Streptococcus thermophilus was studied. Lipids were extracted by applying Folch method and fractioned by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Fatty acid composition was determined both before TLC, on the total fat extracted, and after TLC on diacylglycerol and apolar fractions. Gas chromatographic analysis was performed by using both flame ionization (FID) and mass spectrometer (MS) detector. The main difference between the two strains was the presence of short and medium chain fatty acids in food-born S. thermophilus. Moreover one of the most important bacterial fatty acids, C19 cyclopropane, was detected only in diacylglycerols, which, as reported in literature, are formed transiently as intermediates in the biosynthesis of glycerophospholipids

    Expanding the Chemical Space of Tetracyanobuta-1,3-diene (TCBD) through a Cyano-Diels-Alder Reaction: Synthesis, Structure, and Physicochemical Properties of an Anthryl-fused-TCBD Derivative

    Tetracyanobuta-1,3-diene (TCBD) is a powerful and versatile electron-acceptor moiety widely used for the preparation of electroactive conjugates. While many reports addressing its electron-accepting capability have appeared in the literature, significantly scarcer are those dealing with its chemical modification, a relevant topic which allows to broaden the chemical space of this interesting functional unit. Here, we report on the first example of a high-yielding cyano-Diels-Alder (CDA) reaction between TCBD, that is, where a nitrile group acts as a dienophile, and an anthryl moiety, that is, acting as a diene. The resulting anthryl-fused-TCBD derivative, which structure was unambiguously identified by X-ray diffraction, shows high thermal stability, remarkable electron-accepting capability, and interesting electronic ground- and excited-state features, as characterized by a thorough theoretical, electrochemical, and photophysical investigation.     Reddening, Absorption, and Decline Rate Corrections for a Complete Sample of Type Ia Supernovae leading to a Fully Corrected Hubble Diagram to v<30,000kms-1

    Photometric BVI and redshift data corrected for streaming motions are compiled for 111 "Branch normal", 4 1991T-like, 7 1991bg-like, and 2 unusual SNe Ia. Color excesses E(B-V)host of normal SNe Ia, due to the absorption of the host galaxy, are derived by three independent methods leading to the intrinsic colors at maximum of (B-V)00=-0.024, and (V-I)00=-0.265 if normalized to a common decline rate of Dm_15=1.1. The strong correlation between redshift absolute magnitudes (based on Ho=60), corrected only for the extrinsic Galactic absorption, and the derived E(B-V)host leads to well determined, yet abnormal absorption-to-reddening ratios of R_BVI=3.65, 2.65, and 1.35. Comparison with the canonical Galactic values of 4.1, 3.1, 1.8 forces the conclusion that the law of interstellar absorption in the path length to the SN in the host galaxy is different from the local Galactic law. Improved correlations of the fully corrected absolute magnitudes with host galaxy type, decline rate, and intrinsic color are derived. The four peculiar 1991T-type SNe are significantly overluminous as compared to Branch-normal SNe Ia. The overluminosity of the seven 1999aa-like SNe is less pronounced. The seven 1991bg-types in the sample constitute a separate class of SNeIa, averaging in B two magnitudes fainter than the normal Ia. New Hubble diagrams in BVI are derived out to ~30,000kms-1 using the fully corrected magnitudes and velocities, corrected for streaming motions. Nine solutions for the intercept magnitudes in these diagrams show extreme stability at the 0.04 level using various subsamples of the data. The same precepts for fully correcting SN magnitudes we shall use for the luminosity recalibration of SNe Ia in the forthcoming final review of our HST Cepheid-SN experiment for the Hubble constant.Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    USE OF A HOMEOPATHIC PRODUCT IN DOGS REDUCES THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CANINE ATOPIC DERMATITIS

    This study aimed to determine whether a homeopathic product formulated based on Hepar sulfur, Rhus toxicodendron, Graphites, and Urtica urens would prevent atopic dermatitis in dogs. Ten male beagle dogs were used, divided into two groups with five repetitions per group. The control (CO) animals received a diet with 0.5 mL/day of placebo for 30 consecutive days in a preventive manner, and we later added ethoxyquin at 0.4 mg/day. The treated group (TRA) received a ration with 0.5 mL/day of homeopathic for 30 consecutive days as a preventive, and we later added ethoxyquin at 0.4 mg/day. Blood samples were collected on days 1, 30, and 40 to analyze antioxidant and oxidant status. In an ethogram, the presence of a crusted lesion, alopecic lesion, or hair loss were evaluated at three timepoints: pre-challenge, 5, and 10 days post-challenge. No lesions were observed in the pre-challenge period. Dogs fed the homeopathic on day 5 after challenge presented 40% less crusted lesion and 60% less hair loss than the control. Nitric oxide (NOx) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels increased over time in both groups (P < 0.001). On day 40 of the experiment, lower levels of NOx (P < 0.001) and ROS (P < 0.025) were observed in the TRA group than in the CO group. In contrast, glutathione S-transferase activity increased over time in both groups (P < 0.001); however, this increase on day 40 was more significant in the dogs in the treated group than in the control (P < 0.010). We conclude that the preventive addition of homeopathic reduced the incidence of skin lesions and prevented oxidative stress caused by canine atopic dermatitis

    Phthalocyanine-nanocarbon ensembles: From discrete molecular and supramolecular systems to hybrid nanomaterials

To access the final edited and published work see http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ar5004384Conspectus Phthalocyanines (Pcs) are macrocyclic and aromatic compounds that present unique electronic features such as high molar absorption coefficients, rich redox chemistry, and photoinduced energy/electron transfer abilities that can be modulated as a function of the electronic character of their counterparts in donor-acceptor (D-A) ensembles. In this context, carbon nanostructures such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and, more recently, graphene are among the most suitable Pc companions. Pc-C60 ensembles have been for a long time the main actors in this field, due to the commercial availability of C60 and the ell-established synthetic methods for its functionalization. As a result, many Pc-C60 architectures have been prepared, featuring different connectivities (covalent or supramolecular), intermolecular interactions (self-organized or molecularly dispersed species), and Pc HOMO/LUMO levels. All these elements provide a versatile toolbox for tuning the photophysical properties in terms of the type of process (photoinduced energy/electron transfer), the nature of the interactions beteen the electroactive units (through bond or space), and the kinetics of the formation/decay of the photogenerated species. Some recent trends in this field include the preparation of stimuli-responsive multicomponent systems ith tunable photophysical properties and highly ordered nanoarchitectures and surface-supported systems shoing high charge mobilities. A breakthrough in the Pc-nanocarbon field as the appearance of CNTs and graphene, hich opened a ne avenue for the preparation of intriguing photoresponsive hybrid ensembles shoing light-stimulated charge separation. The scarce solubility of these 1-D and 2-D nanocarbons, together ith their loer reactivity ith respect to C60 stemming from their less strained sp2 carbon netorks, has not meant an unsurmountable limitation for the preparation of variety of Pc-based hybrids. These systems, hich sho improved solubility and dispersibility features, bring together the unique electronic transport properties of CNTs and graphene ith the excellent light-harvesting and tunable redox properties of Pcs. A singular and distinctive feature of these Pc-CNT/graphene (single- or fe-layers) hybrid materials is the control of the direction of the photoinduced charge transfer as a result of the band-like electronic structure of these carbon nanoforms and the adjustable electronic levels of Pcs. Moreover, these conjugates present intensified light-harvesting capabilities resulting from the grafting of several chromophores on the same nanocarbon platform.In this Account, recent progress in the construction of covalent and supramolecular Pc-nanocarbon ensembles is summarized, ith a particular emphasis on their photoinduced behavior. e believe that the high degree of control achieved in the preparation of Pc-carbon nanostructures, together ith the increasing knoledge of the factors governing their photophysics, ill allo for the design of next-generation light-fueled electroactive systems.     Dual-Layer Spectral CT as Innovative Imaging Guidance in Lung Biopsies: Could Color-Coded Z-Effective Images Allow More Diagnostic Samplings and Biomarkers Information?

    The aim of the study was to try to obtain more information on diagnostic samplings and biomarkers using dual-layer spectral CT in lung biopsies. Lung biopsies were performed by merging images obtained with CBCT with those from spectral CT to use them as functional guidance, experimenting with double sampling to determine the difference between the area with a higher Z-effective number and that with a lower Z-effective number. Ten patients with large lung lesions on spectral CT were selected and underwent percutaneous transthoracic lung mass biopsy. Technical success was calculated. The percentage of neoplastic, inflammatory, fibrotic, necrotic cells, or non-neoplastic lung parenchyma was reported. The possibility of carrying out immunohistochemical or molecular biology investigations was analyzed. All lesions were results malignant in 10/10 samples in the Zmax areas; in the Zmin areas, malignant cells were found in 7/10 samples. Technical success was achieved in 100% of cases for Zmax sampling and in 70% for Zmin sampling (p-value: 0.2105). The biomolecular profile was detected in 9/10 (90%) cases in Zmax areas, while in 4/10 (40%) cases in Zmin areas (p-value: 0.0573). The advantage of Z-effective imaging would be to identify a region of the lesion that is highly vascularized and probably richer in neoplastic cells, thus decreasing the risk of obtaining a non-diagnostic biopsy sample

    Interacting Preformed Cooper Pairs in Resonant Fermi Gases

    We consider the normal phase of a strongly interacting Fermi gas, which can have either an equal or an unequal number of atoms in its two accessible spin states. Due to the unitarity-limited attractive interaction between particles with different spin, noncondensed Cooper pairs are formed. The starting point in treating preformed pairs is the Nozi\`{e}res-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) theory, which approximates the pairs as being noninteracting. Here, we consider the effects of the interactions between the Cooper pairs in a Wilsonian renormalization-group scheme. Starting from the exact bosonic action for the pairs, we calculate the Cooper-pair self-energy by combining the NSR formalism with the Wilsonian approach. We compare our findings with the recent experiments by Harikoshi {\it et al.} [Science {\bf 327}, 442 (2010)] and Nascimb\`{e}ne {\it et al.} [Nature {\bf 463}, 1057 (2010)], and find very good agreement.
