    Bound-state/elementary-particle duality in the Higgs sector and the case for an excited 'Higgs' within the standard model

    Though being weakly interacting, QED can support bound states. In principle, this can be expected for the weak interactions in the Higgs sector as well. In fact, it has been argued long ago that there should be a duality between bound states and the elementary particles in this sector, at least in leading order in an expansion in the Higgs condensate. Whether this remains true beyond the leading order is investigated using lattice simulations, and support is found. This provides a natural interpretation of peaks in cross sections as bound states. Unambiguously, this would imply the existence of (possibly very broad) resonances of Higgs and W and Z bound states within the standard model.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures v2: added appendix with technical details, some minor improvement

    Movement cognition and narration of the emotions treatment versus standard speech therapy in the treatment of children with borderline intellectual functioning: A randomized controlled trial

    Background: Borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) is defined as a "health meta-condition... characterized by various cognitive dysfunctions associated with an intellectual quotient (IQ) between 71 and 85 which determines a deficit in the individual's functioning both in the restriction of activities and in the limitation of social participation". It can be caused by many factors, including a disadvantaged background and prematurity. BIF affects 7-12% of primary school children that show academic difficulties due to poor executive functioning. In many children with BIF, language, movement and social abilities are also affected, making it difficult to take part in daily activities. Dropping out of school and psychological afflictions such as anxiety and depression are common in children with BIF. This study investigates whether an intensive rehabilitation program that involves all of the areas affected in children with BIF (Movement, Cognition and Narration of emotions, MCNT) is more effective than Standard Speech Therapy (SST). Methods: This is a multicenter interventional single blind randomized controlled study. Children aged between 6 to 11years who attend a mainstream primary school and have multiple learning difficulties, behavioral problems and an IQ ranging between 85 to 70 have been enrolled. Participants are randomly allocated to one of three groups. The first group receives individual treatment with SST for 45min, twice a week for 9months. The second group receives the experimental treatment MCNT for 3h per day, 5days/ week for 9months and children work in small groups. The third group consists of children on a waiting list for the SST for nine months. Discussion: BIF is a very frequent condition with no ad hoc treatment. Over the long term, there is a high risk to develop psychiatric disorders in adulthood. Due to its high social impact, we consider it very important to intervene during childhood so as to intercept the remarkable plasticity of the developing brain.     ACTH: The Uninhibitable (or is it)?

    Adrenal corticotropic hormone, or ACTH, is a peptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. The full-length peptide is 39 amino acids long. ACTH signals through a G-protein linked receptor in humans, using the adenylyl cyclase pathway. Potassium and chloride channels have also been implicated in human ACTH signaling. Tetrahymena thermophila are free-living, ciliated ptotozoans. These organisms exhibit avoidance behavior toward many polycationic peptides, which serve as chemorepellents. The reason for this is unknown; however, it is hypothesized that natural predators of T. thermophila secrete polycationic peptides, and that polycation avoidance allows T. thermophila to escape predation. We obtained a number of peptides derived from ACTH, including ACTH 1-39, ACTH 1-24, ACTH 11-24, ACTH 6-24, and ACTH 1-14. We hypothesized that the more highly charged peptide derivatives would be the most effective chemorepellents. This hypothesis was proven correct, with the most highly charged ACTH derivative, ACTH 6-24, demonstrated as the most effective chemorepellent. The least charged form of ACTH, ACTH 1-39, was least effective at causing avoidance. We hypothesized that ACTH signaling in T. thermophila would use similar signaling pathways to those previously identified in humans. This, however, has not proven to be the case. We have tested G-protein inhibitors, adenylyl cyclase inhibitors, potassium channel blockers, and chloride channel blockers in T. thermphila. None of these drugs had any measurable effect on ACTH signaling. In addition, we have chelated extracellular calcium (using EGTA) and depleted ER calcium stores (using thapsigargin). Neither of these interventions inhibited ACTH signaling in this organism. Calcium channel blockers also failed to affect avoidance. This is highly unexpected, since all known chemorepellent pathways discovered in Tetrahymena to date are calcium-dependent. It is possible that ACTH is using a novel signaling pathway in T. thermophila. We hope that further testing will enable us to discover more about this signaling mechanism

    Extracellular vesicle-based nucleic acid delivery: Current advances and future perspectives in cancer therapeutic strategies

    Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are sophisticated and sensitive messengers released by cells to communicate with and influence distant and neighboring cells via selective transfer of bioactive content, including protein lipids and nucleic acids. EVs have therefore attracted broad interest as new and refined potential therapeutic systems in many diseases, including cancer, due to their low immunogenicity, non-toxicity, and elevated bioavailability. They might serve as safe and effective vehicles for the transport of therapeutic molecules to specific tissues and cells. In this review, we focus on EVs as a vehicle for gene therapy in cancer. We describe recent developments in EV engineering to achieve efficient intracellular delivery of cancer therapeutics and avoid off-target effects, to provide an overview of the potential applications of EV-mediated gene therapy and the most promising biomedical advances

    Whole-Head Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy as an Ecological Monitoring Tool for Assessing Cortical Activity in Parkinson’s Disease Patients at Different Stages

    Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is increasingly employed as an ecological neuroimaging technique in assessing age-related chronic neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), mainly providing a cross-sectional characterization of clinical phenotypes in ecological settings. Current fNIRS studies in PD have investigated the effects of motor and non-motor impairment on cortical activity during gait and postural stability tasks, but no study has employed fNIRS as an ecological neuroimaging tool to assess PD at different stages. Therefore, in this work, we sought to investigate the cortical activity of PD patients during a motor grasping task and its relationship with both the staging of the pathology and its clinical variables. This study considered 39 PD patients (age 69.0 ± 7.64, 38 right-handed), subdivided into two groups at different stages by the Hoehn and Yahr (HY) scale: early PD (ePD; N = 13, HY = [1; 1.5]) and moderate PD (mPD; N = 26, HY = [2; 2.5; 3]). We employed a whole-head fNIRS system with 102 measurement channels to monitor brain activity. Group-level activation maps and region of interest (ROI) analysis were computed for ePD, mPD, and ePD vs. mPD contrasts. A ROI-based correlation analysis was also performed with respect to contrasted subject-level fNIRS data, focusing on age, a Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIQ), disease duration, the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), and performances in the Stroop Color and Word (SCW) test. We observed group differences in age, disease duration, and the UPDRS, while no significant differences were found for CRIQ or SCW scores. Group-level activation maps revealed that the ePD group presented higher activation in motor and occipital areas than the mPD group, while the inverse trend was found in frontal areas. Significant correlations with CRIQ, disease duration, the UPDRS, and the SCW were mostly found in non-motor areas. The results are in line with current fNIRS and functional and anatomical MRI scientific literature suggesting that non-motor areas—primarily the prefrontal cortex area—provide a compensation mechanism for PD motor impairment. fNIRS may serve as a viable support for the longitudinal assessment of therapeutic and rehabilitation procedures, and define new prodromal, low-cost, and ecological biomarkers of disease progression

    Engulfing a radio pulsar: the case of PSR J1023+0038

    The binary millisecond radio pulsar PSR J1023+0038 has been recently the subject of multiwavelength monitoring campaigns which revealed that an accretion disc has formed around the neutron star (since 2013 June). We present here the results of X-ray and UV observations carried out by the Swift satellite between 2013 October and 2014 May, and of optical and NIR observations performed with the REM telescope, the Liverpool Telescope, the 2.1-m telescope at the San Pedro M\'artir Observatory and the 1.52-m telescope at the Loiano observing station. The X-ray spectrum is well described by an absorbed power law, which is softer than the previous quiescent epoch (up to 2013 June). The strong correlation between the X-ray and the UV emissions indicates that the same mechanism should be responsible for part of the emission in these bands. Optical and infrared photometric observations show that the companion star is strongly irradiated. Double-peaked emission lines in the optical spectra provide compelling evidence for the presence of an outer accretion disc too. The spectral energy distribution from IR to X-rays is well modelled if the contributions from the companion, the disc and the intra-binary shock emission are all considered. Our extensive data set can be interpreted in terms of an engulfed radio pulsar: the radio pulsar is still active, but undetectable in the radio band due to a large amount of ionized material surrounding the compact object. X-rays and gamma-rays are produced in an intra-binary shock front between the relativistic pulsar wind and matter from the companion and an outer accretion disc. The intense spin-down power irradiates the disc and the companion star, accounting for the UV and optical emissions.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication on MNRA

    Dental implants with locking taper connection versus screwed connection: microbiologic and scanning electron microscope study.

    The aim of this study is to carry out an analysis of the Fixture-Abutment Interfaces (FAI), comparing different connection systems, to evaluate the role of geometric discrepancy, which is present between the abutment and the fixture, in favoring the permeability to bacterial colonization. Two types of commercially available FAI were studied, 16 screwed FAI (Sweden-Martina Italia) (4 of Ø 3.8 mm, 4 of Ø 4.7 mm, 4 of Ø 5.7 mm and 4 of Ø 6.7 mm) and 4 FAI (Bicon) (Ø 3.5mm). The assays were carried out in vitro, placing the different dental implants in contact with broth culture of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pyogenes to test the infiltration inside the FAI. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was carried out to evaluate the gap at the fixture-abutment interface. In all the locking taper FAI and in the screwed FAI with a diameter of 3.8 mm there was no trace of bacterial infiltration of the species examined. In the screwed FAI with a diameter of 4.7 mm, 5.7 mm and 6.7 mm there was an increasing level of bacterial infiltration in relationship to the diameter. Therefore, this paper shows that there exists an important correlation between the diameter of the screwed implant and the permeability to microbic infiltration that is directly proportional to the diameter of the implant

    The relevance of polarized bZ production at LHC

    We consider the Z polarization asymmetry A_Z=(sigma(Z_R)-sigma(Z_L))/(sigma(Z_R)+sigma(Z_L)) in the process of associated bZ production at the LHC. We show that in the Standard Model (SM) this quantity is essentially given by its Born approximation, remaining almost unaffected by QCD scales and parton distribution functions variations as well as by electroweak corrections. The theoretical quantity that appears in A_Z is the same that provides the LEP1 Z -> b bbar forward-backward asymmetry, the only measured observable still in some contradiction with the SM prediction. In this sense, A_Z would provide the possibility of an independent verification of the possible SM discrepancy, which could reach, if consistency with LEP1 measurements is imposed, values of the relative ten percent size.Comment: 10 pages, 5 eps figure

    Cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular reactivity correlate with severity of motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease

    Background: Parkinson\u2019s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is mainly characterized by movement dysfunction. Neurovascular unit (NVU) disruption has been proposed to be involved in the disease, but its role in PD neurodegenerative mechanisms is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) within the regions belonging to the motor network, in patients with mild to moderate stages of PD. Methods: Twenty-eight PD patients (66.6 \ub1 8.6 years, 22 males, median [interquartile range, IQR] Hoehn & Yahr = 1.5 [1\u20131.9]) and 32 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were scanned with arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for CBF assessment. ASL MRI was also acquired in hypercapnic conditions to induce vasodilation and subsequently allow for CVR measurement in a subgroup of 13 PD patients and 13 HCs. Median CBF and CVR were extracted from cortical and subcortical regions belonging to the motor network and compared between PD patients and HCs. In addition, the correlation between these parameters and the severity of PD motor symptoms [quantified with Unified Parkinson\u2019s Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS III)] was assessed. The false discovery rate (FDR) method was used to correct for multiple comparisons. Results: No significant differences in terms of CBF and CVR were found between PD patients and HCs. Positive significant correlations were observed between CBF and UPDRS III within the precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus, supplementary motor area, striatum, pallidum, thalamus, red nucleus, and substantia nigra (pFDR < 0.05). Conversely, significant negative correlation between CVR and UPDRS III was found in the corpus striatum (pFDR < 0.05). Conclusion: CBF and CVR assessment provides information about NVU integrity in an indirect and noninvasive way. Our findings support the hypothesis of NVU involvement at the mild to moderate stages of PD, suggesting that CBF and CVR within the motor network might be used as either diagnostic or prognostic markers for PD
