    Self-consistent spin-wave theory for a frustrated Heisenberg model with biquadratic exchange in the columnar phase and its application to iron pnictides

    Recent neutron scattering studies revealed the three dimensional character of the magnetism in the iron pnictides and a strong anisotropy between the exchange perpendicular and parallel to the spin stripes. We extend studies of the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model with S = 1 using self-consistent spin-wave theory. A discussion of two scenarios for the instability of the columnar phase is provided. The relevance of a biquadratic exchange term between in-plane nearest neighbors is discussed. We introduce mean-field decouplings for biquadratic terms using the Dyson-Maleev and the Schwinger boson representation. Remarkably their respective mean-field theories do not lead to the same results, even at zero temperature. They are gauged in the N'eel phase in comparison to exact diagonalization and series expansion. The J1-J2-Jc model is analyzed under the influence of the biquadratic exchange Jbq and a detailed description of the staggered magnetization and of the magnetic excitations is given. The biquadratic exchange increases the renormalization of the in-plane exchange constants which enhances the anisotropy between the exchange parallel and perpendicular to the spin stripes. Applying the model to iron pnictides, it is possible to reproduce the spin-wave dispersion for CaFe2As2 in the direction perpendicular to the spin stripes and perpendicular to the planes. Discrepancies remain in the direction parallel to the spin stripes which can be resolved by passing from S = 1 to S = 2.     Three dimensional generalization of the J1J_1-J2J_2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice and role of the interlayer coupling JcJ_c

    A possibility to describe magnetism in the iron pnictide parent compounds in terms of the two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg J1J_1-J2J_2 model has been actively discussed recently. However, recent neutron scattering data has shown that the pnictides have a relatively large spin wave dispersion in the direction perpendicular to the planes. This indicates that the third dimension is very important. Motivated by this observation we study the J1J_1-J2J_2-JcJ_c model that is the three dimensional generalization of the J1J_1-J2J_2 Heisenberg model for S=1/2S = 1/2 and S = 1. Using self-consistent spin wave theory we present a detailed description of the staggered magnetization and magnetic excitations in the collinear state. We find that the introduction of the interlayer coupling JcJ_c suppresses the quantum fluctuations and strengthens the long range ordering. In the J1J_1-J2J_2-JcJ_c model, we find two qualitatively distinct scenarios for how the collinear phase becomes unstable upon increasing J1J_1. Either the magnetization or one of the spin wave velocities vanishes. For S=1/2S = 1/2 renormalization due to quantum fluctuations is significantly stronger than for S=1, in particular close to the quantum phase transition. Our findings for the J1J_1-J2J_2-JcJ_c model are of general theoretical interest, however, the results show that it is unlikely that the model is relevant to undoped pnictides.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures.     Transcriptomic and metabolic responses of Staphylococcus aureus exposed to supra-physiological temperatures

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous evaluation by different molecular and physiological assays of <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>(<it>S. aureus</it>) responses to heat shock exposure yielded a still fragmentary view of the mechanisms determining bacterial survival or death at supra-physiological temperatures. This study analyzed diverse facets of <it>S. aureus </it>heat-shock adjustment by recording global transcriptomic and metabolic responses of bacterial cultures shifted for 10 min from 37°C to a sub-lethal (43°C) or eventually lethal (48°C) temperature. A relevant metabolic model of the combined action of specific stress response mechanisms with more general, energy-regulating metabolic pathways in heat-shocked <it>S. aureus </it>is presented.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>While <it>S. aureus </it>cultures shifted to 43°C or left at 37°C showed marginal differences in growth and survival rates, bacterial cultures exposed to 48°C showed a rapid growth arrest followed by a subsequent decline in viable counts. The most substantial heat shock-induced changes at both 43°C and 48°C occurred in transcript levels of HrcA- and CtsR-regulated genes, encoding classical chaperones DnaK and GroESL, and some Hsp100/Clp ATPases components, respectively. Other metabolic pathways up-regulated by <it>S. aureus </it>exposure at 48°C included genes encoding several enzymes coping with oxidative stress, and DNA damage, or/and impaired osmotic balance. Some major components of the pentose phosphate cycle and gluconeogenesis were also up-regulated, which reflected depletion of free glucose by bacterial cultures grown in Mueller-Hinton broth prior to heat shock. In contrast, most purine- and pyrimidine-synthesis pathway components and amino acyl-tRNA synthetases were down-regulated at 48°C, as well as arginine deiminase and major fermentative pathway components, such as alcohol, lactate and formate dehydrogenases. Despite the heat-induced, increased requirements for ATP-dependent macromolecular repair mechanisms combined with declining energy sources, intracellular ATP levels remained remarkably constant during heat shock.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The sequential loss of replication and viability at 48°C cannot be explained by significant reductions in intracellular ATP levels, but may reflect ATP rerouting for macromolecular repair mechanisms and cell survival. Our metabolic model also suggests that heat-stressed <it>S. aureus </it>should down-regulate the production of potential, DNA-damaging reactive oxygen species that might result from electron transport-generated ATP, involving excessive levels of free heavy metals, in particular iron.</p

    Can fear conditioning repel California sea lions from fishing activities?

D.T.B. was supported by the NSF during manuscript preparation.Marine mammal interactions with fisheries create conflicts that can threaten human safety, economic interests and marine mammal survival. A deterrent that capitalizes on learning mechanisms, like fear conditioning, may enhance success while simultaneously balancing welfare concerns and reduce noise pollution. During fear conditioning, individuals learn the cues that precede the dangerous stimuli, and respond by avoiding the painful situations. We tested the efficacy of fear conditioning using acoustic stimuli for reducing California sea lion Zalophus californianus interactions from two fishing contexts in California, USA; bait barges and recreational fishing vessels. We performed conditioning trials on 24 individual sea lions interacting with bait barges. We tested for acquisition of conditioned fear by pairing a neutral tone with a startle stimulus. Avoidance was strongest in response to the startle stimulus alone, but low when paired with a neutral tone. From actively fishing vessels, we tested for fear conditioning by exposing sea lions to a neutral tone followed by a startle pulse, a startle pulse alone or a no sound control. We conducted playbacks from 146 (including 48 no sound control) stops over two summer fishing seasons (2013, 2014). The startle stimulus decreased surfacing frequency, reduced bait foraging and increased surfacing distance from the vessel while the conditioned stimulus only caused a mild reduction in surfacing frequency with no other behavioral change. Exposing animals to a pair of a conditioned stimulus with a startle pulse did not achieve the intended management outcome. Rather, it generated evidence (in two study contexts) of immediate learning that led to the reduction of the unconditioned response. Taken together, our results suggest that for fear conditioning to be applied as a non-lethal deterrent, careful consideration has to be given to individual behavior, the unconditioned/conditioned responses and the overall management goals.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Structural evolution and metallicity of lead clusters

    The evolution of the metallic state in lead clusters and its structural implications are subject to ongoing discussions. Here we present molecular beam electric deflection studies of neutral PbN (N = 19-25, 31, 36, 54) clusters. Many of them exhibit dipole moments or anomalies of the polarizability indicating a non-metallic state. In order to resolve their structures, the configurational space is searched using the Pool Birmingham Cluster Genetic algorithm based on density functional theory. Spin-orbit effects on the geometries and dipole moments are taken into account by further relaxing them with two-component density functional theory. Geometries and dielectric properties from quantum chemical calculations are then used to simulate beam deflection profiles. Structures are assigned by the comparison of measured and simulated beam profiles. Energy gaps are calculated using time-dependent density functional theory. They are compared to Kubo gaps, which are an indicator of the metallicity in finite particles. Both, experimental and theoretical data suggest that lead clusters are not metallic up to at least 36 atoms.</p

    Understanding the biases to sepsis surveillance and quality assurance caused by inaccurate coding in administrative health data

    Purpose Timely and accurate data on the epidemiology of sepsis are essential to inform policy decisions and research priorities. We aimed to investigate the validity of inpatient administrative health data (IAHD) for surveillance and quality assurance of sepsis care. Methods We conducted a retrospective validation study in a disproportional stratified random sample of 10,334 inpatient cases of age ≥ 15 years treated in 2015–2017 in ten German hospitals. The accuracy of coding of sepsis and risk factors for mortality in IAHD was assessed compared to reference standard diagnoses obtained by a chart review. Hospital-level risk-adjusted mortality of sepsis as calculated from IAHD information was compared to mortality calculated from chart review information. Results ICD-coding of sepsis in IAHD showed high positive predictive value (76.9–85.7% depending on sepsis definition), but low sensitivity (26.8–38%), which led to an underestimation of sepsis incidence (1.4% vs. 3.3% for severe sepsis-1). Not naming sepsis in the chart was strongly associated with under-coding of sepsis. The frequency of correctly naming sepsis and ICD-coding of sepsis varied strongly between hospitals (range of sensitivity of naming: 29–71.7%, of ICD-diagnosis: 10.7–58.5%). Risk-adjusted mortality of sepsis per hospital calculated from coding in IAHD showed no substantial correlation to reference standard risk-adjusted mortality (r = 0.09). Conclusion Due to the under-coding of sepsis in IAHD, previous epidemiological studies underestimated the burden of sepsis in Germany. There is a large variability between hospitals in accuracy of diagnosing and coding of sepsis. Therefore, IAHD alone is not suited to assess quality of sepsis care

    Electron inflow velocities and reconnection rates at earth's magnetopause and magnetosheath

    Electron inflow and outflow velocities during magnetic reconnection at and near the dayside magnetopause are measured using satellites from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. A case study is examined in detail, and three other events with similar behavior are shown, with one of them being a recently published electron-only reconnection event in the magnetosheath. The measured inflow speeds of 200–400 km/s imply dimensionless reconnection rates of 0.05–0.25 when normalized to the relevant electron Alfvén speed, which are within the range of expectations. The outflow speeds are about 1.5–3 times the inflow speeds, which is consistent with theoretical predictions of the aspect ratio of the inner electron diffusion region. A reconnection rate of 0.04 ± 25% was obtained for the case study event using the reconnection electric field as compared to the 0.12 ± 20% rate determined from the inflow velocity.publishedVersio

    Budd-Chiari Syndrome: Long term success via hepatic decompression using transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) generally implies thrombosis of the hepatic veins and/or the intrahepatic or suprahepatic inferior vena cava. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, the anatomic location, the extent of the thrombotic process and the functional capacity of the liver. It can be divided into medical treatment including anticoagulation and thrombolysis, radiological procedures such as angioplasty and transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIPS) and surgical interventions including orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Controlled trials or reports on larger cohorts are limited due to rare disease frequency. The aim of this study was to report our single centre long term results of patients with BCS receiving one of three treatment options i.e. medication only, TIPS or OLT on an individually based decision of our local expert group.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>20 patients with acute, subacute or chronic BCS were treated between 1988 and 2008. Clinical records were analysed with respect to underlying disease, therapeutic interventions, complications and overall outcome.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>16 women and 4 men with a mean age of 34 ± 12 years (range: 14-60 years) at time of diagnosis were included. Myeloproliferative disorders or a plasmatic coagulopathy were identified as underlying disease in 13 patients, in the other patients the cause of BCS remained unclear. 12 patients presented with an acute BCS, 8 with a subacute or chronic disease. 13 patients underwent TIPS, 4 patients OLT as initial therapy, 2 patients required only symptomatic therapy, and one patient died from liver failure before any specific treatment could be initiated. Eleven of 13 TIPS patients required 2.5 ± 2.4 revisions (range: 0-8). One patient died from his underlying hematologic disease. The residual 12 patients still have stable liver function not requiring OLT. All 4 patients who underwent OLT as initial treatment, required re-OLT due to thrombembolic complications of the graft. Survival in the TIPS group was 92.3% and in the OLT group 75% during a median follow-up of 4 and 11.5 years, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results confirm the role of TIPS in the management of patients with acute, subacute and chronic BCS. The limited number of patients with OLT does not allow to draw a meaningful conclusion. However, the underlying disease may generate major complications, a reason why OLT should be limited to patients who cannot be managed by TIPS.</p

    Material dependence of 2

    Calculations of the material dependence of 2H(d,p)3H cross section and neutron-to-proton branching ratio of d+d reactions have been performed including a concept of the 0+ threshold single particle resonance. The resonance has been assumed to explain the enhanced electron screening effect observed in the d+d reaction for different metallic targets. Here, we have included interference effects between the flat and resonance part of the cross section, which allowed us to enlighten observed suppression of the neutron channel in some metals such as Sr and Li. Since the position of the resonance depends on the screening energy that strongly depends on the local electron density. The resonance width, observed for the d+d reactions in the very hygroscopic metals (Sr and Li) and therefore probably contaminated by oxides, should be much larger than for other metals. Thus, the interference term of the cross section depending on the total resonance width provides the material dependences

The physiology of male reproduction and its regulation of female development are essentially a black box. Several transcriptomes have catalogued expression of tick genes in the salivary glands, synganglion and midgut but no comprehensive investigation has addressed male reproduction and mating. Consequently, a new global approach using transcriptomics, proteomics, and quantitative gene expression is needed to understand male reproduction and stimulation of female reproduction
