Purpose: To evaluate the total phenolic content and antioxidant potential of the methanol extracts of aerial parts and roots of Thymus sipyleus Boiss and also to determine some phenolic compounds using a newly developed and validated reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method.Methods: The total phenolic concentration of the extracts were determined using Folin Ciocalteu method. The antioxidative potential of the samples was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS assays. Phenolics responsible for the antioxidant activity of the plant were quantified by a newly developed and validated RP-HPLC method for the first time. Results: The total phenolic concentration of the aerial parts and roots were 215.1 ± 2.24 and 152.25 ± 2.31 mg GAE/g extracts, respectively. The extract obtained from the aerial parts reduced DPPH with a half-maximal inhibition concentration (IC50) of 0.703 ± 0.027 mg/mL, while the IC50 obtained from ABTS assay was 0.869 ± 0.066 mg/mL. IC50 values of Trolox used as standard for DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays were 0.0430 ± 0.0001 and 0.0420 ± 0.0001 mg/mL, respectively. The results revealed that T. sipyleus contains remarkable amounts of rosmarinic acid in the aerial parts (0.8887 ± 0.0016 g/100g dw) and in the roots (0.3454 ± 0.0006 g/100g dw) which is believed to be mostly responsible for the observed activity. Conclusion: T. sipyleus is a major potential antioxidant source for the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry due to its high contents of rosmarinic acid and total phenolics. Keywords: Thymus sipyleus, Rosmarinic acid, Chlorogenic acid, Caffeic acid, Apigenin, Antioxidan

Tales are among the most important literary genres of child literature which plays an essential role in the development of pre-school children. In addition to entertaining children, tales also prepare them for life, and are frequently used by both pedagogues and families as an extremely important genre. The child, who identifies himself with the hero in the fairy tale, gains the spirit of struggle knowing that there is a solution to the difficulties he may see in life. In addition, fairy tales play an important role in developing children's imagination and in providing them with listening and speaking skills. Therefore, the educational functions of fairy tales are important in every country and it is emphasized that the growth of children with fairy-tales especially in pre-school period is very important for their social and psychological development. Despite these important benefits of tales, it is a known fact that not all tales can be told to children. Therefore, the tales to be used in the education of children should be carefully selected. First of all, fairy tales should be chosen according to the level and development of the child. In addition, as in every country's tales, Turkish Cypriot folk tales have elements that can adversely affect the psychological and social development of children. Families and teachers should take due care and be selective. In this research, 15 Turkish Cypriot folk tales selected by random method were examined and effort is paid to determine and evaluate elements that could be harmful to children.

With the development of technology, traditional games which had an essential place in the lives of children began to lose their importance and were replaced by computer games. An examination of developed countries shows that their unique traditional games are being protected and, thanks to conscious families are nurtured by national values; thus, they serve an extremely important function in terms of shaping national conscience. The value of traditional children’s games can be better understood considering the possibility that especially pre-school children can be affected by the artificial and virtual culture imposed by technological devices. Pre-school period is a period when value education in children begins. Information on values is gained at every stage of life. However, the earliest information is acquired through traditional games in the period when personality begins to develop. In this study, 25 children were presented with Cypriot Turkish children’s games such as hide-and-seek, house, blind man’s buff, dodge ball and duck duck goose. Then children were urged to play these games and observations were made which was followed by interviews with children to obtain their opinions on games and game processes. In the study, it was seen that children acquired several values required by social life such as respect, courtesy, helping each other, courage, love, protection, honesty, forgiveness, respect for the environment, patience, and obeying rules.
