Social dominance and wheel running in females of Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus)
Wheel running is a behaviour that has a rewarding effect on animals. There are not numerous papers investigating potential relationships between social rank and wheel running in mammals kept in groups, and the majority of published researches were conducted on male house mice (Mus musculus). The aim of our study was to investigate if social dominance and wheel running are related in female Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus). Hamsters were kept in groups, and social position of every animal was expressed as dominance index calculated on the basis of agonistic behaviour. We found significant positive correlation between dominance index and wheel running (rs = 0.809, n = 18, P < 0.0001), thus dominants used wheel more often than subordinates. Our results are consistent with those published on male mice. In conclusion, we claim that in majority of mammals (independent of their sex) kept in groups with restricted possibility of wheel running, dominants use wheel more often (or in optimal time) than subordinates, what is consistent with the fact that dominants have priority of access to resources
Heat pipe as heat transfering device in geothermal heat pump systems
Geotermalne pompy ciepła są układami pobierającymi
niskotemperaturowe ciepło zawarte w gruncie kosztem dostarczanej mocy elektrycznej.
Geothermal heat pumps are systems extracting low-temparture
heat from the ground. Addtionall electical power is needed to raise the temperature level in heat pipe cycle (e. g. required for domestic hot water preparation). Traditional technical solution for absorbing ground energy is drilling 50-200 m deep boreholes with vertical collectors (U-shaped pipes)in them. Working fluid flows in collector pipes and draws heat from the ground, however it raises overall costs by the price of energy used by circulation pumps. Aplication of heat pipe instead of traditional vertical collector reduces overall costs of operation of heat pump system by eliminating additional pumping power for working fluid circulation. Economic and energetic rationale for applying this improved system will
be discussed in this paper
Interpretacja niezgodności spawalniczych w złączu T-joint z podkładką podczas badań ultradźwiękowych
One of the most common methods for assessing the welded joints is a nondestructive method using ultrasonic waves. Despite the requirements posed to personnel engaged in research, practice shows that in many cases the incompatibilities in the butt welds in T-joint connections with backing strip are misinterpreted and consequently carry out to unnecessary and costly joints repair. The paper presents the results of tests carried out on samples without incompatibilities, for which the indications of defectoscope suggest the occurrence of apparent defect.
Steel structures have plenty of advantages, which decide on their usage in many buildings. At the same time require they great precision in the design stage as well as during the building phase. Indispensable precision is oft a reason for design and assembly mistakes. In the paper there are presented the assembly mistakes, which occur the most often during the realisation stage.
pacjenta z urazem wielonarządowym, przeprowadzono ocenę różnic w zakresie i czasie
Dodatkowo
różnice w czasie wykonania procedur i transportu, wynikające z liczby ratowników
w zespole mogą wpływać niekorzystnie na stan poszkodowanego. Ograniczenia liczby
członków Podstawowych Zespołów Ratownictwa Medycznego są nieuzasadnione i przyczyniają
się do zmniejszenia bezpieczeństwa pacjentów.Based on the analysis of the results of simulated medical events with participation
of multiorgan injury patients, the authors assessed differences in the scope and time
of procedures performed by paramedic teams consisting of two or three members. It was
noted that the differences in the mass of equipment carried by two as opposed to three
paramedics must affect the time of reaching the victim and increase the degree of physical
exhaustion of the paramedics following their reaching the site. Additionally, differences
in time of performing procedures and transporting the victim resulting from the number
of paramedics in the team may negatively affect the condition of the patient. Limiting the
number of paramedics is not justifi ed and it contributes to decreasing patient safety
INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN MANDIBULAR PARAMETERS, AGE AND CARCASS IN FEMALE FALLOW DEER (DAMA DAMA)
The study material included 152 mandibles of female fallow deer aged 3 to 12. Each mandible was characterized by 15 measurements. Based on the Principal Components Analysis it
was concluded that the size and dimensional constitution of the mandible change with age.
The following parameters are subjected to most significant changes: total length, middle height of the ramus. Additionally, the method indicated that there is a moderate interdependency between the mandibular parameters and an eviscerated carcass mass. Pearson’s correlation coefficient allowed for determining moderate correlations between the carcass mass, mandible total length, breadth of the third molar and middle height of the ramus
Chiroptical methods in a wide wavelength range for obtaining Ln3+complexes with circularly polarized luminescence of practical interest
We studied enantiopure chiral trivalent lanthanide (Ln3+= La3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Tm3+, and Yb3+) complexes with two fluorinated achiral tris(β-diketonate) ligands (HFA = hexafluoroacetylacetonate and TTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate), incorporating a chiral bis(oxazolinyl)pyridine (PyBox) unit as a neutral ancillary ligand, by the combined use of optical and chiroptical methods, ranging from UV to IR both in absorption and circular dichroism (CD), and including circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Ultimately, all the spectroscopic information is integrated into a total and a chiroptical super-spectrum, which allows one to characterize a multidimensional chemical space, spanned by the different Ln3+ions, the acidity and steric demand of the diketone and the chirality of the PyBox ligand. In all cases, the Ln3+ions endow the systems with peculiar chiroptical properties, either allied to f-f transitions or induced by the metal onto the ligand. In more detail, we found that Sm3+complexes display interesting CPL features, which partly superimpose and partly integrate the more common Eu3+properties. Especially, in the context of security tags, the pair Sm/Eu may be a winning choice for chiroptical barcoding

First record of Giardia assemblage D infection in farmed raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides)
The presence of Giardia genotypes was investigated in 18 raccoon dogs ( Nyctereutes procyonoides ) and 80 red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes ) on one farm. To demonstrate Giardia cysts, fresh and trichrome stained smears were microscopically screened. Two molecular markers were used for Giardia genotyping: a fragment of the beta-giardin gene and a fragment of the glutamate dehydrogenase gene. All faecal samples obtained from red foxes were negative. Giardia cysts were identified only in 2 of the 18 raccoon dogs. The result of genotyping and phylogenetic analysis showed that the G. duodenalis from both raccoon dogs belonged to the D assemblage. This finding of a new animal reservoir of G. duodenalis canids-specific genotypes is important in order to eliminate the risk of infecting other animals bred for fur. Further molecular analyses of Giardia isolates in raccoon dogs are required. The present study represents the first contribution to knowledge of G. duodenalis genotypes in raccoon dogs
