Analysis of Magnetoencephalography Signals from Alzheimer’s Disease Patients Using Granger Causality

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe aim of this study was to analyze resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) activity in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by means of Granger Causality (GC), an effective connectivity measure that provides an estimation of the information flow between brain regions. For this task, five minutes of MEG recordings were acquired with a 148-channel whole-head magnetometer from 36 AD patients and 26 healthy controls. Abnormalities in AD connectivity were found in the five typical frequency bands: delta (δ, 1-4 Hz), theta (θ, 4-8 Hz), alpha (α, 8-13 Hz), beta (β, 13-30 Hz), and gamma (γ, 30-65 Hz). Noteworthy increments in delta band and decrements in beta and gamma bands revealed disrupted connections in AD brain activity. Our analyses suggest that GC may be useful to characterize the brain impairment in AD.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (TEC2014-53196-R)Junta de Castilla y León (VA059U13 y BIO/VA08/15

Alterations of Effective Connectivity Patterns in Mild Cognitive Impairment: An MEG Study

Producción CientíficaNeuroimaging techniques have demonstrated over the years their ability to characterize the brain abnormalities associated with different neurodegenerative diseases. Among all these techniques, magnetoencephalography (MEG) stands out by its high temporal resolution and noninvasiveness. The aim of the present study is to explore the coupling patterns of resting-state MEG activity in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). To achieve this goal, five minutes of spontaneous MEG activity were acquired with a 148- channel whole-head magnetometer from 18 MCI patients and 26 healthy controls. Interchannel relationships were investigated by means of two complementary coupling measures: coherence and Granger causality. Coherence is a classical method of functional connectivity, while Granger causality quantifies effective (or causal) connectivity. Both measures were calculated in the five conventional frequency bands: delta (d, 1-4 Hz), theta (q, 4-8 Hz), alpha (a, 8-13 Hz), beta (b, 13-30 Hz), and gamma (g, 30-45Hz). Our results showed that connectivity values were lower for MCI patients than for controls in all frequency bands. However, only Granger causality revealed statistically significant differences between groups (p-values < 0.05, FDR corrected Mann-Whitney U-test), mainly in the beta band. Our results support the role of MCI as a disconnection syndrome, which elicits early alterations in effective connectivity patterns. These findings can be helpful to identify the neural substrates involved in prodromal stages of dementia. This research was supported by ‘Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad’ and ‘European Regional Development Fund’ under project TEC2014-53196-R, by ‘European Commission’ and ‘European Regional Development Fund’ under project ‘Análisis y correlación entre el genoma completo y la actividad cerebral para la ayuda en el diagnóstico de la enfermedad de Alzheimer’ (‘Cooperation Programme Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal POCTEP 2014-2020’), and by ‘Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León’ under project VA037U16. Hippocampal dysfunction is associated with memory impairment in multiple sclerosis: A volumetric and functional connectivity study

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested a relationship between neuroanatomical and neurofunctional hippocampal alterations and episodic memory impairments in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients OBJECTIVE: We examined hippocampus volume and functional connectivity (FC) changes in MS patients with different episodic memory capabilities. METHODS: hippocampal subfield volume and FC changes were compared in two subgroups of MS patients with and without episodic memory impairment (MSi and MSp, respectively) and healthy controls. A discriminant function (DF) analysis was used to identify which of these neuroanatomical and neurofunctional parameters were the most relevant components of the mnemonic profiles of HC, MSp and MSi. RESULTS: MSi showed reduced volume in several hippocampal subfields compared to MSp and HC. Ordinal gradation (MSi>MSp>HC) was also observed for FC between the posterior hippocampus and several cortical areas. DF-based analyses revealed that reduced right fimbria volume and enhanced FC at the right posterior hippocampus were the main neural signatures of the episodic memory impairments observed in the MSi group. CONCLUSIONS: Before any sign of episodic memory alterations (MSp), FC increased on several pathways that connect the hippocampus with cortical areas. These changes further increased when the several hippocampal volumes reduced and memory deficits appeared (MSi).This study was sponsored by grants P1-1B2014-15 awarded by Universitat Jaume I and PSI2015-67285-R awarded by MINECO to Dr. Cristina For

The progressive increase in tourism has generated a number of strategies to improve competitiveness indices, including the hosting service with bilingual staff and the possibility of developing ecotourism activities. In the context of Florencia Caquetá, how much their service is unknown hospitality offers tourists these possibilities, as well, with the aim to investigate these aspects, an exploratory and quantitative research was performed, using techniques such as home visits, surveys and checklists. The results indicate that although the hotels recognize the importance of the English language, few instruments have been developed to improve low levels of performance and apathetic to change the mode of ECOHOTELES or the implementation of more sustainable measures. So that the.

The abundance and distribution of total autotrophic picophytoplankton (PFP), temperature, salinity, PAR, and chlorophyll a were determined in two presumably contrasting environments: (1) two coastal areas (close to the mouths of three rivers), and (2) one oceanic area (Campeche Canyon), of the southern Gulf of Mexico, during the "dry season" (June-July, 2004). The picoprokaryotes Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus were identified by TEM, whereas Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes populations were also recognized by flow cytometry. The highest PFP abundance (1.67×105 cells ml-1) was found in shallow waters (~10 m depth) around the Grijalva-Usumacinta river mouth, followed by that found at a station close to the Coatzacoalcos River (1.19×105 cells ml-1); PFP abundances in the Campeche Canyon were usually lower (maximum 1.53×104 cells ml-1). Greater variability in PFP abundances was found in coastal stations than in oceanic waters, and weak relationships appeared between the patterns of chlorophyll a and PFP abundance. Peaks of PFP were detected in both coastal and more oceanic areas, but in the Campeche Canyon they were located deeper (60 m), relatively closer to the deep maximum of chlorophyll (located at about 75 m). Results suggest that PFP populations include a substantial photosynthetic component in both coastal and oceanic waters of the southern Gulf of Mexico.
