Very Low Nucleation Rates of Glucose Isomerase Crystals under Microgravity in the International Space Station
In situ observation of the nucleation and growth of glucose isomerase (GI) crystals under microgravity was conducted using an optical microscope during the first flight of the Advanced Nano Step project undertaken in the International Space Station (ISS). Very low apparent nucleation rates (J’) of GI crystals in the solution and on the substrate of the growth container were confirmed compared with those on the ground. In particular, J’ of GI crystals in the solution were a few times lower than that on the substrate. The growth rates (R) of the {101} faces of GI crystals on the substrate and the apparent growth rates (R’) in the solution were measured. The very low nucleation rates allowed us to successfully measure R at a very high supersaturation region (up to ln(C/Ce) = 6), at which R cannot be measured on the ground
Production in Two-Photon Processes at TRISTAN
We have carried out an inclusive measurement of production
in two-photon processes at TRISTAN. The mean was 58 GeV and the
integrated luminosity was 199 pb. High-statistics samples were
obtained under such conditions as no-, anti-electron, and remnant-jet tags. The
remnant-jet tag, in particular, allowed us, for the first time, to measure the
cross sections separately for the resolved-photon and direct processes.Comment: 20 pages, Latex format, 4 figures and KEK-mark included. Table 1
revised. To be published in Phys. Lett.
Measurement of inclusive electron cross section in collisions at TRISTAN
We have studied open charm production in collisions with the
TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN collider. In this study, charm
quarks were identified by electrons (and positrons) from semi-leptonic decays
of charmed hadrons. The data corresponded to an integrated luminosity of 95.3
pb at a center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented as
the cross sections of inclusive electron production in
collisions with an anti-tag condition, as well as the subprocess cross
sections, which correspond to resolved-photon processes. The latter were
measured by using a sub-sample with remnant jets. A comparison with various
theoretical predictions based on direct and resolved-photon processes showed
that our data prefer that with relatively large gluon contents in a photon at
small , with the next-to-leading order correction, and with a
charm-quark mass of 1.3 GeV.Comment: 26 pages, Latex format (article), 5 figures included, to be published

Measurement of the cross-section and forward-backward charge asymmetry for the b and c-quark in e+e- annihilation with inclusive muons at sqrt(s) = 58 GeV
We have studied inclusive muon events using all the data collected by the
TOPAZ detector at sqrt(s)=58 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 273pb-1. From
1328 inclusive muon events, we measured the ratio R_qq of the cross section for
qq-bar production to the total hadronic cross section and forward-backward
asymmetry A^q_FB for b and c quarks. The obtained results are R_bb =
0.13+-0.02(stat)+-0.01(syst), R_cc = 0.36+-0.05(stat)+-0.05(syst), A^b_FB =
-0.20+-0.16(stat)+-0.01(syst) and A^c_FB = -0.17+-0.14(stat)+-0.02(syst), in
fair agreement with a prediction of the standard model.Comment: To be published in EPJ C. 24 pages, 12 figure
Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetries for charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at =58GeV with electron tagging
We have measured, with electron tagging, the forward-backward asymmetries of
charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at =58.01GeV, based on
23,783 hadronic events selected from a data sample of 197pb taken with
the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The measured forward-backward asymmetries are
and , which are consistent with the standard model
predictions.Comment: 19 pages, Latex format (article), 5 figures included. to be published

A Measurement of the Cross Section in Two-Photon Processes
We have measured the inclusive production cross section in a
two-photon collision at the TRISTAN collider. The mean of
the collider was 57.16 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 150 . The
differential cross section () was obtained in the
range between 1.6 and 6.6 GeV and compared with theoretical predictions, such
as those involving direct and resolved photon processes.Comment: 8 pages, Latex format (article), figures corrected, published in

Draft Genome of the Pearl Oyster Pinctada fucata: A Platform for Understanding Bivalve Biology
The study of the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata is key to increasing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in pearl biosynthesis and biology of bivalve molluscs. We sequenced ∼1150-Mb genome at ∼40-fold coverage using the Roche 454 GS-FLX and Illumina GAIIx sequencers. The sequences were assembled into contigs with N50 = 1.6 kb (total contig assembly reached to 1024 Mb) and scaffolds with N50 = 14.5 kb. The pearl oyster genome is AT-rich, with a GC content of 34%. DNA transposons, retrotransposons, and tandem repeat elements occupied 0.4, 1.5, and 7.9% of the genome, respectively (a total of 9.8%). Version 1.0 of the P. fucata draft genome contains 23 257 complete gene models, 70% of which are supported by the corresponding expressed sequence tags. The genes include those reported to have an association with bio-mineralization. Genes encoding transcription factors and signal transduction molecules are present in numbers comparable with genomes of other metazoans. Genome-wide molecular phylogeny suggests that the lophotrochozoan represents a distinct clade from ecdysozoans. Our draft genome of the pearl oyster thus provides a platform for the identification of selection markers and genes for calcification, knowledge of which will be important in the pearl industry
Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --
Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four
in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and
comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school
students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an
electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of
his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses
estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the
personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently
allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of
estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other
regions/countries
Observation of Highly Virtual Photon-Photon Collisions to Hadrons at TRISTAN
We have observed highly virtual () photon-photon collisions
to hadronic final states at . The integrated
luminosity of the data sample was 241pb. Both scattered beam-electrons
and scattered beam-positrons were detected using low-angle calorimeters (i.e.,
both photons were highly virtual, "double-tag"); we obtained 115 hadronic
events with an estimated background of . The cross section obtained
was pb in the GeV and GeV region, while the lowest order quark-parton model predicted 3.00pb.Comment: 14 pages, latex (revtex), 2 figures, available at

A Cluster of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections in a Hospital Ward for Adult Immunocompromised Patients
Four male patients admitted to the same ward in the first half of September 201Y were identified to have respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)infection. Their ages ranged from 49 to 85 years(median 72.5). One patient was infected with human immunodeficiency virus and three patients had hematological malignancies. Following immuno-chromatological testing with a nasal cavity swab, RSV infection was diagnosed. Although blood and sputum cultures were performed in three patients, no significant bacteria were detected. Two cases responded to supportive therapy. However, one patient died secondary to multiple myeloma, and another patient developed pneumonia and died with an exacerbation of leukemia. RSV infections in immunocompromised hosts are associated with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis will facilitate isolation of infected individuals to prevent hospital outbreaks
