    Evaluation of Congo red staining kit to determine proteinuria in preeclampsia

    Plantear la posible utilidad del uso de la tinción de Rojo Congo en el diagnóstico de proteinuria en casos de preeclampsia.Introduction: Preeclampsia is characterised by the increased excretion of misfolding protein, attracted by a Diazo dye denominated congo red. Aim: To compare congo red staining kit versus a urocolor test to determine proteinuria in patients with preeclampsia. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, transversal study, performed between August 2010 to July 2011, including pregnant and puerperal women with the clinical diagnosis of preeclampsia. From all patients, a single sample of 24 hours urine was tested with congo red to determine the presence of proteinuria, comparing the qualitative results of the urine dipstick for proteinuria and the gold standard determination of protein in 24 hours urine collection. Differences among nominal conditions were evaluated by the Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: A total of 50 pregnant and puerperal women were included in this study. The statistical comparison between 2 vs. 3, 2 vs. 4 and 3 vs. 4, congo red positive fields reached significant difference (p≤0.001) in relation to the mean proteinuria values for each one. In contrast, with the urocolor test there were no differences per number of positive crosses. Conclusion: The congo red has a high selectivity for beta-folded proteins in preeclampsia being a promising screening test of high value to the clinician

    When otologic procedures that involve tympanic membrane repairs are performed, biomaterials or biological tissues as normal as grafts are used. At the moment, biological material from the own patient is used with varying success rates. The procedure used and the patient's tissue repair capabilities tend to determine the outcome. We present a preliminary study on tympanic membrane perforation repairs using an autograft obtained by manipulating platelet degranulation and the coagulation cascade and reinforced with a seal using platelet growth factors. We present three cases in which we used this procedure. The results will be valued based on the tympanic perforation closure index. With this study, we want to assess the effectiveness of tympanic perforation repairs with this technically simple method. If this method was objectively proved to be effective, it would lead to lower patient morbidity and sanitary costs

    Sputter optimization of AlN on diamond substrates for high frequency SAW resonators

    The AlN/diamond structure is an attractive combination for SAW devices and its application at high frequencies. In this work, the synthesis of AlN thin films by reactive sputtering has been optimized on diamond substrates in order to process high frequency devices. Polished microcrystalline and as-grown nanocrystalline diamond substrates have been used to deposit AlN of different thickness under equal sputtering conditions. For the smoother substrates, the FWHM of the rocking curve of the (002) AlN peak varies from 3.8° to 2.7° with increasing power. SAW one port resonators have been fabricated on these films, whose electrical characterization (in terms of S11 parameters) is reported

    International psychometric validation of the Living with Chronic Illness Scale in Spanish-speaking patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Objectives To validate the Living with Chronic Illness (LW-CI) Scale in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Design Observational, cross-sectional validation study with retest. Acceptability, reliability, precision and construct validity were tested. Setting The study took place in primary and secondary specialised units of public and private hospitals of Spain and Colombia. Participants The study included 612 patients with COPD assessed from May 2018 to May 2019. A consecutive cases sampling was done. Inclusion criteria included: (A) patients with a diagnosis of COPD; (B) native Spanish speaking; (C) able to read and understand questionnaires; and (D) able to provide informed consent. Exclusion criteria included: (A) cognitive deterioration and (B) pharmacological effect or disorder that could disrupt the assessment. Results The LW-CI-COPD presented satisfactory data quality, with no missing data or floor/ceiling effects, showing high internal consistency for all the domains (Cronbach's alpha for the total score 0.92). Test-retest reliability was satisfactory (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.92). The LW-CI-COPD correlated 0.52-0.64 with quality of life and social support measures. The scale demonstrated satisfactory known-groups validity, yielding signifi cantly different scores in patients grouped according to COPD severity levels. Conclusions This has been the first validation study of the LW-CI-COPD. It is a feasible, reliable, valid and precise self-reported scale to measure living with COPD in the Spanish-speaking population.     Synthesis and antifungal activity of novel oxazolidin-2-one linked-1,2,3-triazole derivatives

    Artículo IndizadoNovel oxazolidin-2-one-linked 1,2,3-triazole derivatives (4a–k) were synthesized by straightforward and versatile azide–enolate (3 + 2) cycloaddition. The series of compounds was screened for antifungal activity against four filamentous fungi as well as six yeast species of Candida spp. According to their efficiency and breadth of scope, they can be ordered as 4k > 4d > 4h > 4a, especially in relation to the activity displayed against Candida glabrata ATCC-34138, Trichosporon cutaneum ATCC-28592 and Mucor hiemalis ATCC-8690, i.e. compounds 4d, 4h and 4k showed excellent activity against C. glabrata (MIC 0.12, 0.25 and 0.12 μg mL−1, respectively), better than that of itraconazole (MIC 1 μg ml−1). The activity of compound 4d (MIC = 2 μg mL− 1) was higher than that observed for the standard antifungal drug (MIC = 8 μg mL−1) against Trichosporon cutaneum, while compound 4k displayed an excellent antimycotic activity against Mucor hiemalis (MIC = 2 μg mL−1 vs. 4 μg mL−1 for itraconazole). In addition, we describe herein a novel mild and eco-friendly synthetic protocol for obtaining β-ketosulfones (adducts to afford compounds 4a–k) from α-brominated carbonyls in an aqueous nanomicellar medium at room temperature.CONACYT, Secretaría de Investigación de Estudios Avanzados de la UAE

    Differential Effects of IGF-1R Small Molecule Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors BMS-754807 and OSI-906 on Human Cancer Cell Lines

    We have determined the effects of the IGF-1R tyrosine kinase inhibitors BMS-754807 (BMS) and OSI-906 (OSI) on cell proliferation and cell-cycle phase distribution in human colon, pancreatic carcinoma, and glioblastoma cell lines and primary cultures. IGF-1R signaling was blocked by BMS and OSI at equivalent doses, although both inhibitors exhibited differential antiproliferative effects. In all pancreatic carcinoma cell lines tested, BMS exerted a strong antiproliferative effect, whereas OSI had a minimal effect. Similar results were obtained on glioblastoma primary cultures, where HGUE-GB-15, -16 and -17 displayed resistance to OSI effects, whereas they were inhibited in their proliferation by BMS. Differential effects of BMS and OSI were also observed in colon carcinoma cell lines. Both inhibitors also showed different effects on cell cycle phase distribution, BMS induced G2/M arrest followed by cell death, while OSI induced G1 arrest with no cell death. Both inhibitors also showed different effects on other protein kinases activities. Taken together, our results are indicative that BMS mainly acts through off-target effects exerted on other protein kinases.
