Spatial wave intensity correlations in quasi-one-dimensional wires
Spatial intensity correlations between waves transmitted through random media
are analyzed within the framework of the random matrix theory of transport.
Assuming that the statistical distribution of transfer matrices is isotropic,
we found that the spatial correlation function can be expressed as the sum of
three terms, with distinctive spatial dependences. This result coincides with
the one obtained in the diffusive regime from perturbative calculations, but
holds all the way from quasi-ballistic transport to localization. While
correlations are positive in the diffusive regime, we predict a transition to
negative correlations as the length of the system decreases.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letter

This article reports a study about users’ perceptions of printed newspaper´s
advertising versus the adapted one to the digital tablet (iPad). This paper compares
the recall, visibility and rejection levels of ads on the tablet and on
printed press. Aim is to identify most effective advertising formats for the
digital tablet, considering the specificities of use, interactivity and size. The
study bases on the advertising Apps perception, especially those with a minor
level of interactivity. Many newspapers for tablet use enriched versions of the
paper and incorporate links or photos and videos instead of doing a specific
application for these devices. Therefore, this study is about those derivatives of
the habitual ones formats in web and newspapers. Results show that nowadays
there´s no significant difference in the way the user/reader perceives this kind
of advertising formats
Effect of long range spatial correlations on the lifetime statistics of an emitter in a two-dimensional disordered lattice
The effect of spatial correlations on the Purcell effect in a bidimensional
dispersion of resonant nanoparticles is analyzed. We perform extensive
calculations on the fluorescence decay rate of a point emitter embedded in a
system of nanoparticles statistically distributed according to a simple 2D
lattice-gas model near the critical point. For short-range correlations (high
temperature thermalization) the Purcell factors present a long-tailed statistic
which evolves towards a bimodal distribution when approaching the critical
point where the spatial correlation length diverges. Our results suggest
long-range correlations as a possible origin of the large fluctuations of
experimental decay rates in disordered metal films.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Broadband telecom transparency of semiconductor-coated metal nanowires: more transparent than glass
Metallic nanowires (NW) coated with a high permittivity dielectric are
proposed as means to strongly reduce the light scattering of the conducting NW,
rendering them transparent at infrared wavelengths of interest in
telecommunications. Based on a simple, universal law derived from
electrostatics arguments, we find appropriate parameters to reduce the
scattering efficiency of hybrid metal-dielectric NW by up to three orders of
magnitude as compared with the scattering efficiency of the homogeneous
metallic NW. We show that metal@dielectric structures are much more robust
against fabrication imperfections than analogous dielectric@metal ones. The
bandwidth of the transparent region entirely covers the near IR
telecommunications range. Although this effect is optimum at normal incidence
and for a given polarization, rigorous theoretical and numerical calculations
reveal that transparency is robust against changes in polarization and angle of
incidence, and also holds for relatively dense periodic or random arrangements.
A wealth of applications based on metal-NWs may benefit from such invisibility
High-quality photonic crystals with a nearly complete band gap obtained by direct inversion of woodpile templates with titanium dioxide
Photonic crystal materials are based on a periodic modulation of the dielectric constant on length scales comparable to the wavelength of light. These materials can exhibit photonic band gaps; frequency regions for which the propagation of electromagnetic radiation is forbidden due to the depletion of the density of states. In order to exhibit a full band gap, 3D PCs must present a threshold refractive index contrast that depends on the crystal structure. In the case of the so-called woodpile photonic crystals this threshold is comparably low, approximately 1.9 for the direct structure. Therefore direct or inverted woodpiles made of high refractive index materials like silicon, germanium or titanium dioxide are sought after. Here we show that, by combining multiphoton lithography and atomic layer deposition, we can achieve a direct inversion of polymer templates into TiO₂ based photonic crystals. The obtained structures show remarkable optical properties in the near-infrared region with almost perfect specular reflectance, a transmission dip close to the detection limit and a Bragg length comparable to the lattice constant
Radiative and non-radiative local density of states on disordered plasmonic films
We present numerical calculations of the Local Density of Optical States
(LDOS) in the near field of disordered plasmonic films. The calculations are
based on an integral volume method, that takes into account polarization and
retardation effects, and allows us to discriminate radiative and non-radiative
contributions to the LDOS. At short distance, the LDOS is dominated by
non-radiative channels, showing that changes in the spontaneous dynamics of
dipole emitters are driven by non-radiative coupling to plasmon modes. Maps of
radiative and non-radiative LDOS exhibit strong fluctuations, but with
substantially different spatial distributions
Controlling dispersion forces between small particles with artificially created random light fields
Appropriate combinations of laser beams can be used to trap and manipulate small particles with optical tweezers as well as to induce significant optical binding forces between particles. These interaction forces are usually strongly anisotropic depending on the interference landscape of the external fields. This is in contrast with the familiar isotropic, translationally invariant, van der Waals and, in general, Casimir-Lifshitz interactions between neutral bodies arising from random electromagnetic waves generated by equilibrium quantum and thermal fluctuations. Here we show, both theoretically and experimentally, that dispersion forces between small colloidal particles can also be induced and controlled using artificially created fluctuating light fields. Using optical tweezers as a gauge, we present experimental evidence for the predicted isotropic attractive interactions between dielectric microspheres induced by laser-generated, random light fields. These light-induced interactions open a path towards the control of translationally invariant interactions with tuneable strength and range in colloidal systemsThis work was supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation through project numbers 132736 and 149867, and through the National Centre of Competence in Research Bio-Inspired Materials.
