A transformation method to study the solvability of fully coupled FBSDEs
We present a new method for checking global solvability of fully coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), where all function parameters are Lipschitz continuous, the terminal condition is monotone and the diffusion coefficient of the forward part depends monotonically on z, the control process component of the backward part. We show that one can reduce, via a linear transformation, the FBSDE to an auxiliary FBSDE for which the Lipschitz constant of the forward diffusion coefficient w.r.t. z is smaller than the inverse of the Lipschitz constant of the terminal condition w.r.t. the forward component x. The latter condition allows to verify existence of a global solution by analyzing the space derivative of the decoupling field. We illustrate with several examples how the transformation method can be used for proving global solvability of FBSDEs
Sarcomas of the extremities and the pelvis: comparing local recurrence after incisional and after core-needle biopsy
BACKGROUND The degree of contamination of healthy tissue with tumor cells during a biopsy in bone or soft tissue sarcomas is clearly dependant on the type of biopsy. Some studies have confirmed a clinically relevant contamination of the biopsy tract after incisional biopsies, as opposed to core-needle biopsies. The aim of our prospective study was to evaluate the risk of local recurrence depending on the biopsy type in extremity and pelvis sarcomas. METHODS We included 162 patients with a minimum follow-up of 6 months after wide resection of extremity sarcomas. All diagnostic and therapeutic procedures were performed at a single, dedicated sarcoma center. The excision of the biopsy tract after an incisional biopsy was performed as a standard with all tumor resections. All patients received their follow-up after the conclusion of therapy at our center by means of regional MRI studies and, at a minimum, CT of the thorax to rule out pulmonary metastatic disease. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the influence of the biopsy type and of several other clinical factors on the rate of local recurrence and on the time of local recurrence-free survival. RESULTS One hundred sixty-two patients with bone or soft tissue tumors of the extremities and the pelvis underwent either an incisional or a core-needle biopsy of their tumor, with 70 sarcomas (43.2%) being located in the bone. 84.6% of all biopsies were performed as core-needle biopsies. The median follow-up time was 55.6 months, and 22 patients (13.6%) developed a local recurrence after a median time of 22.4 months. There were no significant differences between incisional and core-needle biopsy regarding the risk of local recurrence in our subgroup analysis with differentiation by kind of tissue, grading of the sarcoma, and perioperative multimodal therapy. CONCLUSIONS In a large and homogenous cohort of extremity and pelvic sarcomas, we did not find significant differences between the groups of incisional and core-needle biopsy regarding the risk of local recurrence. The excision of the biopsy tract after incisional biopsy in the context of the definitive tumor resection seems to be the decisive factor for this result
30 W ultra-stable laser light at 2128 nm for future gravitational-wave observatories
Thermal noise of the dielectric mirror coatings can limit laser-optical
high-precision measurements. Coatings made of amorphous silicon and silicon
nitride could provide a remedy for both gravitational-wave detectors and
optical clocks. However, the absorption spectra of these materials require
laser wavelengths around 2 m. For GW detectors, ultra-stable laser light
of tens or hundreds of watts is needed. Here, we report the production of
nearly 30 W of ultra-stable laser light at 2128 nm by frequency conversion of
1064 nm light from a master oscillator power amplifier system. We achieve an
external conversion efficiency of (67.5 0.5) % via optical parametric
oscillation and a relative power noise in the range of
/ at 100 Hz, which is almost as low as that of the
input light and underlines the potential of our approach.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, LIGO Document P230036
Survival and prognostic factors in conventional G1 chondrosarcoma
Background
Chondrosarcoma is the second most frequent malignant bone tumor. Grade I chondrosarcoma (syn.: atypical cartilaginous tumor) is classified as an intermediately and locally aggressive neoplasm and typically is treated less aggressively (i.e., by intralesional curettage). Does the data regarding local recurrence (LR) and metastatic disease justify this?
Methods
From 1982 to 2014, 37 consecutive patients with G1 chondrosarcoma had been resected or curetted. The margin was defined as R0 (wide resection) or R1 (marginal resection). All patients were followed for evidence of local recurrence or metastatic disease. Overall and recurrence-free survival were calculated, and various potentially prognostic factors were evaluated.
Results
In 23 patients (62%), the tumor was widely (R0) resected, whereas in 14 patients, (38%) the resection was marginal (R1). Overall survival was 97% after 5âyears, 92% after 10âyears, and 67% after 20âyears. Five-year local recurrence-free survival was 96%. Ten-year local recurrence-free survival was 83%. Local recurrence-free survival showed a significant correlation to margin status but no correlation to location or age. None of the patients with local recurrence died during the follow-up. One patient had metastatic disease at initial presentation, and a further five patients developed metastatic disease during follow-up. Metastatic disease proofed to be a highly significant factor for survival but was not correlated to local recurrence.
Conclusions
There was no significant correlation between the outcome and the primary tumor location. Marginal resection was a risk factor for LR, but there was no significant difference in the overall survival in patients with or without LR. Metastatic disease (16%) was more common than expected from the literature and a significant predictor for poor overall survival
Production of NickelâRich Cathodes for LithiumâIon Batteries from Lab to Pilot Scale under Investigation of the Process Atmosphere
The selection of an appropriate cathode active material is important for operation performance and production of high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Promising candidates are nickel-rich layered oxides like LiNiCoMnO (NCM, x+y+z=1) with nickel contents of âxâââ„ 0.8, characterized by high electrode potential and specific capacity. However, these materials are associated with capacity fading due to their high sensitivity to moisture. Herein, two different polycrystalline NCM materials with nickel contents of 0.81ââ€ââxâââ€â0.83 and protective surface coatings are processed in dry-room atmosphere (dew point of supply air Tââââ65â°C) at lab scale including the slurry preparation and coating procedure. In comparison, cathodes are produced in ambient atmosphere and both variants are tested in coin cells. Moreover, processing at pilot scale in ambient atmosphere is realized successfully by continuous coating and drying of the cathodes. Relevant electrode properties such as adhesion strength, specific electrical resistance, and pore-size distribution for the individual process steps are determined, as well as the moisture uptake during calendering. Furthermore, rate capability and cycling stability are investigated in pouch cells, wherein initial specific discharge capacities of up to 190âmAhâg (with regard to the cathode material mass) are achieved at 0.2C
A novel causal mechanism for grey squirrel bark stripping: The Calcium Hypothesis
AbstractGrey squirrels, Sciurus carolinensis, damage trees in the UK by stripping bark and eating the underlying phloem; squirrel motivation for damage is, however, unknown. Damage can result in deterioration of timber quality and a significant economic toll on the forestry industry. Prediction of severe damage followed by targeted killing of squirrels is the current recommended management option. However, the use of warfarin (an anticoagulant poison) is now restricted in the UK and other more humane methods of killing are labour-intensive, so an alternative solution is needed. A better understanding of what motivates grey squirrels to strip bark may enable a preventive approach to be developed. Whilst the bark stripping literature has explored predictive factors affecting the likelihood of damage, causal understanding is lacking. The aim of this review is to introduce the Calcium Hypothesis as a possible explanation for bark stripping, with a view to informing the prevention of damage. The Calcium Hypothesis states that grey squirrels damage trees to ameliorate a calcium deficiency. The main predictive factors of bark stripping behaviour each inform and lend support to the Calcium Hypothesis. Calcium is stored in tree phloem, and damage increases with phloem width, providing squirrels with more calcium per unit area ingested. Calcium levels increase in trees as active growth resumes after winter dormancy, this occurs immediately prior to the main bark stripping season of MayâJuly, and trees growing most vigorously are at increased risk of damage. It is likely grey squirrels also have a requirement for calcium during the bark stripping season. Adult females will be under post-parturition pressures such as lactation, and juveniles will be going through their main period of bone growth, both of which likely represent a requirement for calcium â which supports an observed positive correlation between juvenile abundance and bark stripping. A high autumnal seed crop increases juvenile recruitment the following spring, and could also induce a requirement for calcium to a population due to the high phosphorus to calcium ratio of seeds. To further investigate the hypothesis, the extent to which grey squirrels can utilise calcium oxalate, as calcium occurs in bark, should be determined, and also the extent to which grey squirrels undergo seasonal periods of calcium deficiency. Increasing our causal understanding of bark stripping could inform the future development of preventive measures to aid forest management
A transportome-scale amiRNA-based screen identifies redundant roles of Arabidopsis ABCB6 and ABCB20 in auxin transport
Transport of signaling molecules is of major importance for regulating plant growth, development, and responses to the environment. A prime example is the spatial- distribution of auxin, which is regulated via transporters to govern developmental patterning. A critical limitation in our ability to identify transporters by forward genetic screens is their potential functional redundancy. Here, we overcome part of this functional redundancy via a transportome, multi-targeted forward-genetic screen using artificial-microRNAs (amiRNAs). We generate a library of 3000 plant lines expressing 1777 amiRNAs, designed to target closely homologous genes within subclades of transporter families and identify, genotype and quantitatively phenotype, 80 lines showing reproducible shoot growth phenotypes. Within this population, we discover and characterize a strong redundant role for the unstudied ABCB6 and ABCB20 genes in auxin transport and response. The unique multi-targeted lines generated in this study could serve as a genetic resource that is expected to reveal additional transporters
