    COPD Pharmacological Management Update

    Get PDF
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although it is considered both preventable and treatable, COPD still represents an important public health challenge. The classes of pharmacological agents widely used for the maintenance treatment are bronchodilators (SABA, SAMA, LABA, LAMA) and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). While it is largely accepted that inhaled bronchodilators, which are effective and well tolerated in patients with stable disease, are the cornerstone of the pharmacological management of COPD, there is an ongoing debate regarding the role of inhaled corticosteroids. This is also reflected in the last versions of the GOLD recommendations, which suffered dramatic changes in the recent years. The trend for personalized medicine led to the search for biomarkers which could guide the therapeutic decisions. Recent studies demonstrated that blood eosinophils can reasonably predict the ICS relative efficacy in preventing COPD exacerbations and thus could inform the disease management

An overview on the negative impacts of tourism

    Get PDF
Besides the well known positive impacts of tourism (e.g. job creation, income generation, cultural and natural heritage preservation, etc.) one must be aware also of the negative effects of tourism (e.g. congestion, prices increase, pollution, etc.). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the negative impacts of tourism classified by economic impact, social (socio-cultural) impact and environmental impact. When planning and developing a tourism investment all stakeholders in a destination should realize also the negative aspects that might be associated with tourism development. Moreover, it is necessary to have an approach to minimize the negative effects of tourism along with maximizing the positive ones in order to make tourism an efficient and sustainable instrument for the economic development at local, regional and national level.</p

Effects of climate change on Romanian mountain tourism: Are they positive or mostly negative?

    Get PDF
Climate change represents a real threat for the winter sport resorts, especially those situated at low altitudes and without any diversification of the tourism product. Mountain tourism represents a real attraction for the holidays and for short weekends being mostly visited by tourists in summer and winter season, which make them more vulnerable to the lack of snow in the cold season, floods, storms or even heat waves. This paper has two main objectives, firstly to measure the impact of the climate change on tourism demand for Romanian mountain tourism, and secondly to identify sustainable solutions for adaptation of vulnerable mountain resorts, such as Sinaia, one of the most known winter sport resorts in Romania. First, the authors will identify the impacts of climate change on Romanian mountain tourism, starting with the effect of the temperature increase, snow depth variation and the extreme weather events occurring in mountain resorts on tourist flows. Positive and negative effects of climate change will be identified, and starting from the results, the authors will present necessary measures to transform the Romanian mountain tourism in an adaptive destination.CNCSIS-UEFISCU - PN II-RU 94/2010, Contract no. 30/28.07.201

In the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic year 2020, the 30th European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress took place for the first time in a fully virtual format. Despite the challenging nature of the task to create and deliver an online event of this size and scope, it turned out to be a great success, welcoming over 33 000 delegates to the specially designed online platform and offering more than 450 scientific and educational sessions. Somewhat predictably, this year's ERS International Congress dedicated a full day to the topic of COVID-19, highlighting that infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a respiratory disease that is particularly important this year. In this article, the Early Career Members of the Assembly 10 (Respiratory Infections and Tuberculosis) review some of the most interesting sessions including presentations and posters on respiratory infections and tuberculosis that were deemed as important
