On the behavior of clamped plates under large compression
We determine the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues of clamped plates under large compression by relating this problem to eigenvalues of the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions. Using the method of fundamental solutions, we then carry out a numerical study of the extremal domains for the first eigenvalue, from which we see that these depend on the value of the compression, and start developing a boundary structure as this parameter is increased. The Role of Differentially Expressed miRNAs and Potential miRNA-mRNA Regulatory Network in Prostate Cancer Progression and Metastasis
Purpose: Aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) has been discovered in prostate cancer progression however their function is not well understood, thereby further investigation is required to understand the importance of underlying mechanisms and their involvement in multiple signaling pathways, as well as their potential as therapeutic targets. In this study the role and expression levels of three miRNAs were evaluated: miR-21, miR-221 and miR-200c in different prostate cancer cell lines. In addition, based on the latest studies on miRNAs function, their association with other target genes and molecules were analyzed using bioinformatic tools.
Methods: Three PCa cell lines PC3, LNCaP and VCaP and normal prostate epithelial cell line PNT1A were screened for miRNA expression levels using qPCR. miRNA target genes and their association with signaling pathways were analyzed through several Network and pathway analysis online tools.
Findings: Upregulation of miR-21 and miR-221 was observed in PC3 and VCaP prostate cancer cells, respectively. According to KEGG analysis, we found that Hippo signaling pathway and cytokine-cytokine receptor interactions were affected by miR-21 while miR-221 would interfere with ECM-receptor interaction, Fatty acid elongation and Huntington disease molecular networks. Exposure of PC3 cells to TGF-β (10 µM) caused upregulation of miR-21 with the evidence with increased invasion potential.
Discussion and Conclusion: miRNAs could regulate several genes in multiple signaling pathways. Here, we demonstrated that in a panel of PCa cell lines, both mir-21 and miR-221 expressions were upregulated. miR-21 may be a dignostic and prognosticbiomarker for PCa
Extreme Value Theory for Piecewise Contracting Maps with Randomly Applied Stochastic Perturbations
We consider globally invertible and piecewise contracting maps in higher
dimensions and we perturb them with a particular kind of noise introduced by
Lasota and Mackey. We got random transformations which are given by a
stationary process: in this framework we develop an extreme value theory for a
few classes of observables and we show how to get the (usual) limiting
distributions together with an extremal index depending on the strength of the

Inverse type II seesaw mechanism and its signature at the LHC and ILC
The advent of the LHC, and the proposal of building future colliders as the
ILC, both programmed to explore new physics at the TeV scale, justifies the
recent interest in studying all kind of seesaw mechanisms whose signature lies
on such energy scale. The natural candidate for this kind of seesaw mechanism
is the inverse one. The conventional inverse seesaw mechanism is implemented in
an arrangement involving six new heavy neutrinos in addition to the three
standard ones. In this paper we develop the inverse seesaw mechanism based on
Higgs triplet model and probe its signature at the LHC and ILC. We argue that
the conjoint analysis of the LHC together with the ILC may confirm the
mechanism and, perhaps, infer the hierarchy of the neutrino masses.Comment: 24 pages, 22 figure
Raman scattering through surfaces having biaxial symmetry
Magnetic Raman scattering in two-leg spin ladder materials and the
relationship between the anisotropic exchange integrals are analyzed by P. J.
Freitas and R. R. P. Singh in Phys. Rev. B, {\bf 62}, 14113 (2000). The angular
dependence of the two-magnon scattering is shown to provide information for the
magnetic anisotropy in the Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and La_6Ca_8Cu_24O_41 compounds. We
point out that the experimental results of polarized Raman measurements at
arbitrary angles with respect to the crystal axes have to be corrected for the
light ellipticity induced inside the optically anisotropic crystals. We refer
quantitatively to the case of Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and discuss potential implications
for spectroscopic studies in other materials with strong anisotropy.Comment: To be published as a Comment in Phys. Rev.
Determining Heavy Mass Parameters in Supersymmetric SO(10) Models
Extrapolations of soft scalar mass parameters in supersymmetric theories can
be used to explore elements of the physics scenario near the grand unification
scale. We investigate the potential of this method in the lepton sector of
SO(10) which incorporates right-handed neutrino superfields. The method is
exemplified in two models by exploring limits on the precision that can be
expected from coherent LHC and e+e- collider analyses in the reconstruction of
the fundamental scalar mass parameters at the unification scale and of the
D-terms related to the breaking of grand unification symmetries. In addition,
the mass of the third-generation right-handed neutrino can be estimated in
seesaw scenarios. Even though the models are simplified and not intended to
account for all aspects of a final comprehensive SO(10) theory, they provide
nevertheless a valid base for identifying essential elements that can be
inferred on the fundamental high-scale theory from high-energy experiments.Comment: 26 pp LaTeX; version published in Phys. Rev.
