    Fant\^omas For QCD: parton distributions in a pion with B\'ezier parametrizations

    We report on a new framework to parametrize parton distribution functions (PDFs) and other hadronic nonperturbative functions using polynomial functions realized by B\'ezier curves. B\'ezier parameterizations produce a stable fit with a low number of free parameters, while competing in performance with neural networks and offering explicit interpretation. We specifically apply this approach to determine PDFs in a pion, essential for understanding of nonperturbative QCD dynamics.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, presented at DIS202

    Prospecção Tecnológica Voltada para o Agronegócio

    This work is the result of a technological prospection in a patent database, through the PatSeer Pro research platform. The theme involves agribusiness, in the technological aspects that are being developed and applied within the context of Agro 4.0, with the technologies of interest to the research being those related to the internet of things, artificial intelligence, big data and machine learning. The research comprises a search for patent documents of both natures, namely, invention patents and utility models, the search being defined by keywords and temporal filter, which in the end, returned 591 documents, which make up a unique portfolio and which was analyzed graphically, bringing the main technological aspects within the researched field. From the result of the technological prospection, it is possible to identify that India (IN) has been standing out in the development of technologies that relate to the keywords used, currently obtaining a high rate of growth in patent deposits, even surpassing China (CN), the largest depositor within the researched technological field. Furthermore, within the scope of Agro 4.0, the main technology in which applicants most seek patent protection is related to Agricultural Big Data.Este trabalho é o resultado de uma prospecção tecnológica em banco de dados de patentes, por meio da plataforma de pesquisa PatSeer Pro. O tema envolve o agronegócio, nos aspectos tecnológicos que estão sendo desenvolvidos e aplicados dentro do contexto do Agro 4.0, sendo as tecnologias de interesse da pesquisa aquelas relacionadas com a Internet das Coisas, Inteligência Artificial, big data e aprendizado de máquina. A pesquisa compreendeu uma busca por documentos patentários de ambas as naturezas, a saber: patentes de invenção e modelos de utilidade, sendo a busca definida por palavras-chave e filtro temporal, que, ao final, retornou 591 documentos, os quais compõem um portfólio único e que foi analisado graficamente, trazendo os principais aspectos tecnológicos dentro do campo pesquisado. Do resultado da prospecção tecnológica, é possível identificar que a Índia (IN) vem se destacando no desenvolvimento das tecnologias que se relacionam às palavras-chave utilizadas, obtendo atualmente elevada taxa de crescimento nos depósitos de patentes, inclusive superando a China (CN), maior depositante dentro do campo tecnológico pesquisado. Ademais, dentro do escopo do Agro 4.0, a principal tecnologia em que os depositantes mais buscam por proteção patentária relaciona-se com o Big Data Agrícola

    Prospects for clinical use of reprogrammed cells for autologous treatment of macular degeneration

    Since the discovery of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) in 2006, the symptoms of many human diseases have been reversed in animal models with iPSC therapy, setting the stage for future clinical development. From the animal data it is clear that iPSC are rapidly becoming the lead cell type for cell replacement therapy and for the newly developing field of iPSC-derived body organ transplantation. The first human pathology that might be treated in the near future with iPSC is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which has recently passed the criteria set down by regulators for phase I clinical trials with allogeneic human embryonic stem cell-derived cell transplantation in humans. Given that iPSC are currently in clinical trial in Japan (RIKEN) to treat AMD, the establishment of a set of international criteria to make clinical-grade iPSC and their differentiated progeny is the next step in order to prepare for future autologous cell therapy clinical trials. Armed with clinical-grade iPSC, we can then specifically test for their threat of cancer, for proper and efficient differentiation to the correct cell type to treat human disease and then to determine their immunogenicity. Such a rigorous approach sets a far more relevant paradigm for their intended future use than non-clinical-grade iPSC. This review focuses on the latest developments regarding the first possible use of iPSC-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells in treating human disease, covers data gathered on animal models to date and methods to make clinical-grade iPSC, suggests techniques to ensure quality control and discusses possible clinical immune responses

    A Spitzer c2d Legacy Survey to Identify and Characterize Disks with Inner Dust Holes

    Understanding how disks dissipate is essential to studies of planet formation. However, identifying exactly how dust and gas dissipates is complicated due to difficulty in finding objects clearly in the transition of losing their surrounding material. We use Spitzer IRS spectra to examine 35 photometrically-selected candidate cold disks (disks with large inner dust holes). The infrared spectra are supplemented with optical spectra to determine stellar and accretion properties and 1.3mm photometry to measure disk masses. Based on detailed SED modeling, we identify 15 new cold disks. The remaining 20 objects have IRS spectra that are consistent with disks without holes, disks that are observed close to edge-on, or stars with background emission. Based on these results, we determine reliable criteria for identifying disks with inner holes from Spitzer photometry and examine criteria already in the literature. Applying these criteria to the c2d surveyed star-forming regions gives a frequency of such objects of at least 4% and most likely of order 12% of the YSO population identified by Spitzer. We also examine the properties of these new cold disks in combination with cold disks from the literature. Hole sizes in this sample are generally smaller than for previously discovered disks and reflect a distribution in better agreement with exoplanet orbit radii. We find correlations between hole size and both disk and stellar masses. Silicate features, including crystalline features, are present in the overwhelming majority of the sample although 10 micron feature strength above the continuum declines for holes with radii larger than ~7 AU. In contrast, PAHs are only detected in 2 out of 15 sources. Only a quarter of the cold disk sample shows no signs of accretion, making it unlikely that photoevaporation is the dominant hole forming process in most cases.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures and 8 tables.     Effect of enhancing audit and feedback on uptake of childhood pneumonia treatment policy in hospitals that are part of a clinical network: a cluster randomized trial.

    BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) revised its clinical guidelines for management of childhood pneumonia in 2013. Significant delays have occurred during previous introductions of new guidelines into routine clinical practice in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). We therefore examined whether providing enhanced audit and feedback as opposed to routine standard feedback might accelerate adoption of the new pneumonia guidelines by clinical teams within hospitals in a low-income setting. METHODS: In this parallel group cluster randomized controlled trial, 12 hospitals were assigned to either enhanced feedback (n = 6 hospitals) or standard feedback (n = 6 hospitals) using restricted randomization. The standard (network) intervention delivered in both trial arms included support to improve collection and quality of patient data, provision of mentorship and team management training for pediatricians, peer-to-peer networking (meetings and social media), and multimodal (print, electronic) bimonthly hospital specific feedback reports on multiple indicators of evidence guideline adherence. In addition to this network intervention, the enhanced feedback group received a monthly hospital-specific feedback sheet targeting pneumonia indicators presented in multiple formats (graphical and text) linked to explicit performance goals and action plans and specific email follow up from a network coordinator. At the start of the trial, all hospitals received a standardized training on the new guidelines and printed booklets containing pneumonia treatment protocols. The primary outcome was the proportion of children admitted with indrawing and/or fast-breathing pneumonia who were correctly classified using new guidelines and received correct antibiotic treatment (oral amoxicillin) in the first 24 h. The secondary outcome was the proportion of correctly classified and treated children for whom clinicians changed treatment from oral amoxicillin to injectable antibiotics. RESULTS: The trial included 2299 childhood pneumonia admissions, 1087 within the hospitals randomized to enhanced feedback intervention, and 1212 to standard feedback. The proportion of children who were correctly classified and treated in the first 24 h during the entire 9-month period was 38.2% (393 out of 1030) and 38.4% (410 out of 1068) in the enhanced feedback and standard feedback groups, respectively (odds ratio 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.37-3.34; P = 0.855). However, in exploratory analyses, there was evidence of an interaction between type of feedback and duration (in months) since commencement of intervention, suggesting a difference in adoption of pneumonia policy over time in the enhanced compared to standard feedback arm (OR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.36, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced feedback comprising increased frequency, clear messaging aligned with goal setting, and outreach from a coordinator did not lead to a significant overall effect on correct pneumonia classification and treatment during the 9-month trial. There appeared to be a significant effect of time (representing cumulative effect of feedback cycles) on adoption of the new policy in the enhanced feedback compared to standard feedback group.     Influenza D Virus Infection in Feral Swine Populations, United States

    Influenza D virus (IDV) has been identified in domestic cattle, swine, camelid, and small ruminant populations across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. Our study investigated seroprevalence and transmissibility of IDV in feral swine. During 2012–2013, we evaluated feral swine populations in 4 US states; of 256 swine tested, 57 (19.1%) were IDV seropositive. Among 96 archived influenza A virus–seropositive feral swine samples collected from 16 US states during 2010–2013, 41 (42.7%) were IDV seropositive. Infection studies demonstrated that IDV-inoculated feral swine shed virus 3–5 days postinoculation and seroconverted at 21 days postinoculation; 50% of in-contact naive feral swine shed virus, seroconverted, or both. Immunohistochemical staining showed viral antigen within epithelial cells of the respiratory tract, including trachea, soft palate, and lungs.
