    Authenticated and Secure Automotive Service Discovery with DNSSEC and DANE

    Automotive softwarization is progressing and future cars are expected to operate a Service-Oriented Architecture on multipurpose compute units, which are interconnected via a high-speed Ethernet backbone. The AUTOSAR architecture foresees a universal middleware called SOME/IP that provides the service primitives, interfaces, and application protocols on top of Ethernet and IP. SOME/IP lacks a robust security architecture, even though security is an essential in future Internet-connected vehicles. In this paper, we augment the SOME/IP service discovery with an authentication and certificate management scheme based on DNSSEC and DANE. We argue that the deployment of well-proven, widely tested standard protocols should serve as an appropriate basis for a robust and reliable security infrastructure in cars. Our solution enables on-demand service authentication in offline scenarios, easy online updates, and remains free of attestation collisions. We evaluate our extension of the common vsomeip stack and find performance values that fully comply with car operations

    Inhibition of protein kinase C μ by various inhibitors. Inhibition from protein kinase c isoenzymes

    AbstractVarious inhibitors were tested for their potential to suppress the kinase activity of protein kinase C μ (PKCμ) in vitro and in vivo. Among the staurosporine-derived, rather selective PKC inhibitors the indolocarbazole Gö 6976 previously shown to inhibit preferentially cPKC isotypes proved to be a potent inhibitor of PKCμ with an IC5 of 20 nM, whereas the bisindolymaleimide Gö 6983 was extremely ineffective in suppressing PKCμ kinase activity with a thousand-fold higher ICm of 20 μM. Other strong inhibitors of PKCμ were the rather unspecific inhibitors staurosporine and K252a. Contrary to the poor inhibition of PKCμ by Gö 6983, this compound was found to suppress in vitro kinase activity of PKC isoenzymes from all three subgroups very effectively with IC50 values from 7 to 60 nM. Thus, Gö 6983 was able to differentiate between PKCμ and other PKC isoenzymes being useful for selective determination of PKCμ kinase activity in the presence of other PKC isoenzymes

    Cognitive Ergonomics in Virtual Environments: Development of an Intuitive and Appropriate Input Device for Navigating in a Virtual Maze

    For patients suffering from mild cognitive impairments, the navigation through a virtual maze should be as intuitive and efficient as possible in order to minimize cognitive and physical strain. This paper discusses the appropriateness of interaction devices for being used for easy navigation tasks. Information gained from human centered evaluation was used to develop an intuitive and ergonomic interaction device. Two experiments examined the usability of tracked interaction devices. Usability problems with the devices are discussed. The findings from the experiments were translated into general design guidance, in addition to specific recommendations. A new device was designed on the basis of these recommendations and its usability was evaluated in a second experiment.     Algebraic Geometric Comparison of Probability Distributions

    We propose a novel algebraic framework for treating probability distributions represented by their cumulants such as the mean and covariance matrix. As an example, we consider the unsupervised learning problem of finding the subspace on which several probability distributions agree. Instead of minimizing an objective function involving the estimated cumulants, we show that by treating the cumulants as elements of the polynomial ring we can directly solve the problem, at a lower computational cost and with higher accuracy. Moreover, the algebraic viewpoint on probability distributions allows us to invoke the theory of Algebraic Geometry, which we demonstrate in a compact proof for an identifiability criterion

    Neurophysiological Age Differences During Task-Performance in a Stereoscopic Virtual Environment

    In today's society, there is an increasing number of workplaces in virtual environments (VE). But, there are only a few reports dealing with occupational health issues or age effects. The question arises how VR generally interferes with cognitive processes. This interference might have relevant implications for workability and work-efficiency in virtual environments. Event-related potentials are known to reflect different stages of stimulus reception, evaluation, and response. We have established an electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring, focussing on event-related potentials (N100; mismatch negativity, i.e., MMN) to obtain access to attention dependent and pre-attentive processing of sensory stimuli applied in VE. The MMN is known to be correlated with the ability of subjects to react to an unexpected event. The aim of the present study was to investigate cognitive responses to distracting auditory stimuli in two different age groups in a virtual environment (VE) and in a real environment ("real reality”), and to compare characteristic neurophysiological response patterns. Data show that stimulus detection as given by the N100 amplitude and latency does not differ in both age groups and task conditions. In contrast, the pre-attentive processing as given by the MMN is altered in the VR such as the non-VR condition in an age-related manner.     From fibrous plant residues to mineral-associated organic carbon – the fate of organic matter in Arctic permafrost soils

    Permafrost-affected soils of the Arctic account for 70 % or 727 Pg of the soil organic carbon (C) stored in the northern circumpolar permafrost region and therefore play a major role in the global C cycle. Most studies on the budgeting of C storage and the quality of soil organic matter (OM; SOM) in the northern circumpolar region focus on bulk soils. Thus, although there is a plethora of assumptions regarding differences in terms of C turnover or stability, little knowledge is available on the mechanisms stabilizing organic C in Arctic soils besides impaired decomposition due to low temperatures. To gain such knowledge, we investigated soils from Samoylov Island in the Lena River delta with respect to the composition and distribution of organic C among differently stabilized SOM fractions. The soils were fractionated according to density and particle size to obtain differently stabilized SOM fractions differing in chemical composition and thus bioavailability. To better understand the chemical alterations from plant-derived organic particles in these soils rich in fibrous plant residues to mineral-associated SOM, we analyzed the elemental, isotopic and chemical composition of particulate OM (POM) and clay-sized mineral-associated OM (MAOM). We demonstrate that the SOM fractions that contribute with about 17 kg C m3^{-3} for more than 60 % of the C stock are highly bioavailable and that most of this labile C can be assumed to be prone to mineralization under warming conditions. Thus, the amount of relatively stable, small occluded POM and clay-sized MAOM that currently accounts with about 10 kg C m3^{-3} for about 40 % of the C stock will most probably be crucial for the quantity of C protected from mineralization in these Arctic soils in a warmer future. Using δ15^{15}N as a proxy for nitrogen (N) balances indicated an important role of N inputs by biological N fixation, while gaseous N losses appeared less important. However, this could change, as with about 0.4 kg N m3^{-3} one third of the N is present in bioavailable SOM fractions, which could lead to increases in mineral N cycling and associated N losses under global warming. Our results highlight the vulnerability of SOM in Arctic permafrost-affected soils under rising temperatures, potentially leading to unparalleled greenhouse gas emissions from these soils
