    Design study of a regenerative pump using one-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical techniques

    Regenerative pumps are low cost, compact, able to deliver high heads at low flow rates. Furthermore with stable performance characteristics they can operate with very small NPSH. The complexity of the flow field is a serious challenge for any kind of mathematical modelling. This paper compares an analytical and numerical technique of resolving the performance for a new regenerative pump design. The performance characteristics computed by a CFD approach and a new one-dimensional model are compared and matched to experimental test results. The approaches of both modelling techniques are assessed as potential design tools. The approaches are shown to not only successfully resolve the complex flow field within the pump; the CFD is also capable of resolving local flow properties to conduct further refinements. The flow field is represented by the CFD as it has never been before. A new design process is suggested. The new regenerative pump design is considered with a comparable duty centrifugal pump, proving that for many high head low flow rate applications the regenerative pump is a better choice

    This paper presents a numerical and experimental analysis of a new regenerative pump design. The complex flow-field within regenerative pumps represents a significant challenge to previous published mathematical models. The new pump design incorporates a new axial inlet and outlet port. The experimental and numerical results demonstrate that it is not only possible to resolve the flowfield for this pump type but also demonstrates this pump as a viable alternative to other kinetic rotodynamic machines. The use of the latest rapid manufacturing techniques have enabled the production of the complex geometry of the axial ports required for the new configuration

    Early menopause and cardiovascular risk factors: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

    OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal association of early natural menopause with changes in cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs). METHODS Postmenopausal women from the Swiss CoLaus study, reporting age at natural menopause (ANM) and having CVRFs measurements (blood lipids, blood pressure, glucose, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance [HOMA-IR], and inflammatory markers) at baseline (2003-2006) and first follow-up (2009-2012) were eligible for analysis. Age at natural menopause was analyzed as a continuous variable and in categories (ANM <45 and ≥45 y old). Linear regression analysis and linear mixed models were used to assess whether ANM is associated cross-sectionally and longitudinally with changes in CVRFs. Models were adjusted for demographic characteristics, lifestyle-related factors, time since menopause, medication, and clinical conditions. RESULTS We analyzed 981 postmenopausal women. The cross-sectional analysis showed that women with ANM younger than 45 years had lower diastolic blood pressure (β = -3.76 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -5.86 to -1.65) compared with women whose ANM was 45 years or older. In the longitudinal analysis, ANM younger than 45 years was associated with changes in log insulin (β = 0.26; 95% CI = 0.08 to 0.45) and log homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance levels (β = 0.28; 95% CI = 0.08 to 0.48). No associations were found between ANM and other CVRFs. CONCLUSIONS Early menopause may be associated with changes in glucose metabolism, while it may have little to no impact on other CVRFs. Larger longitudinal studies are needed to replicate our findings

    A one-dimensional numerical model for the momentum exchange in regenerative pumps

    The regenerative pump is a rotor-dynamic turbomachine capable of developing high heads at low flow rates and low specific speeds. In spite of their low efficiency, usually less than 50 %, they have found a wide range of applications as compact single-stage pumps with other beneficial features. The potential of a modified regenerative pump design is presented for consideration of the performance improvements. In this paper the fluid dynamic behaviour of the novel design was predicted using a one-dimensional model developed by the authors. Unlike most one-dimensional models previously published for regenerative pumps, the momentum exchange is computed numerically. Previous one-dimensional models relied on experimental data and correction factors; the model presented in this paper demonstrates accurate prediction of the pump performance characteristics without the need for correction with experimental data. The validity of this approach is highlighted by the comparison of computed and measured results for two different regenerative pump standards. The pump performance is assessed numerically without the need of correction factors or other experimental data. This paper presents an approach for regenerative pumps using a physically valid geometry model and by resolving the circulatory velocity in peripheral direction

    High redshift Fermi blazars observed by GROND and Swift

    We observed 5 gamma-ray loud blazars at redshift greater than 2 with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and the UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) onboard the Swift satellite, and the Gamma-Ray burst Optical Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) instrument. These observations were quasi simultaneous, usually within a few hours. For 4 of these blazars the near-IR to UV data show the presence of an accretion disc, and we could reliably estimate its accretion rate and black hole mass. One of them, PKS 1348+007, was found in an extraordinarily high IR-optical state, almost two orders of magnitude brighter than at the epoch of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey observations. For all the 5 quasars the physical parameters of the jet emitting zone, derived by applying a one-zone emission model, are similar to that found for the bulk of other gamma-ray loud quasars. With our observations we have X-ray data for the full sample of blazars at z>2 present in the Fermi 2-yrs (2LAC) catalog. This allows to have a rather complete view of the spectral energy distribution of all high-redshift Fermi blazars, and to draw some conclusions about their properties, and especially about the relation between the accretion rate and the jet power.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRA

    NGC454: unveiling a new "changing look" AGN

    We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC454E, belonging to the interacting system NGC454. Observations performed with Suzaku, XMM-Newton and Swift allowed us to detect a dramatic change in the curvature of the 2-10 keV spectrum, revealing a significant variation of the absorbing column density along the line of sight (from ~ 1 x10^{24}cm^{-2} to ~ 1x10^{23}cm^{-2}). Consequently, we propose this source as a new member of the class of "changing look" AGN, i.e. AGN that have been observed both in Compton-thin (NH =10^{23 cm^{-2}) and reflection dominated states (Compton-thick, NH >10^{24} cm^{-2}). Due to the quite long time lag (6 months) between the Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations we cannot infer the possible location of the obscuring material causing the observed variability. In the 6-7 keV range the XMM-Newton observation also shows a clear signature of the presence of an ionized absorber. Since this feature is not detected during the Suzaku observation (despite its detectability), the simplest interpretation is that the ionized absorber is also variable; its location is estimated to be within ~10^{-3} pc from the central black hole, probably much closer in than the rather neutral absorber.Comment: 10 page

    Endovascular revascularization strategies for aortoiliac and femoropopliteal artery disease: a meta-analysis.

    AIMS Optimal endovascular management of intermittent claudication (IC) remains disputed. This systematic review and meta-analysis compares efficacy and safety outcomes for balloon angioplasty (BA), bare-metal stents (BMS), drug-coated balloons (DCB), drug-eluting stents (DES), covered stents, and atherectomy. METHODS AND RESULTS Electronic databases were searched for randomized, controlled trials (RCT) from inception through November 2021. Efficacy outcomes were primary patency, target-lesion revascularization (TLR), and quality-of-life (QoL). Safety endpoints were all-cause mortality and major amputation. Outcomes were evaluated at short-term (<1 year), mid-term (1-2 years), and long-term (≥2 years) follow-up. The study was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021292639). Fifty-one RCTs enrolling 8430 patients/lesions were included. In femoropopliteal disease of low-to-intermediate complexity, DCBs were associated with higher likelihood of primary patency [short-term: odds ratio (OR) 3.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.44-4.24; long-term: OR 2.47, 95% CI 1.93-3.16], lower TLR (short-term: OR 0.33, 95% CI 0.22-0.49; long-term: OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.29-0.60) and similar all-cause mortality risk, compared with BA. Primary stenting using BMS was associated with improved short-to-mid-term patency and TLR, but similar long-term efficacy compared with provisional stenting. Mid-term patency (OR 1.64, 95% CI 0.89-3.03) and TLR (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.22-1.11) estimates were comparable for DES vs. BMS. Atherectomy, used independently or adjunctively, was not associated with efficacy benefits compared with drug-coated and uncoated angioplasty, or stenting approaches. Paucity and heterogeneity of data precluded pooled analysis for aortoiliac disease and QoL endpoints. CONCLUSION Certain devices may provide benefits in femoropopliteal disease, but comparative data in aortoiliac arteries is lacking. Gaps in evidence quantity and quality impede identification of the optimal endovascular approach to IC

    Nomads of the Galaxy

    We estimate that there may be up to ~10^5 compact objects in the mass range 10^{-8} -10^{-2} solar mass per main sequence star that are unbound to a host star in the Galaxy. We refer to these objects as nomads; in the literature a subset of these are sometimes called free-floating or rogue planets. Our estimate for the number of Galactic nomads is consistent with a smooth extrapolation of the mass function of unbound objects above the Jupiter-mass scale, the stellar mass density limit, and the metallicity of the interstellar medium. We analyze the prospects for detecting nomads via Galactic microlensing. The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) will measure the number of nomads per main sequence star greater than the mass of Jupiter to ~ 13%, and the corresponding number greater than the mass of Mars to ~25%. All-sky surveys such as GAIA and LSST can identify nomads greater than about the mass of Jupiter. We suggest a dedicated drift scanning telescope that covers approximately 100 square degrees in the Southern hemisphere could identify nomads as small as 10^{-8} solar mass via microlensing of bright stars with characteristic lightcurve timescales of a few seconds.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
