A study was undertaken t o develop an appropriate technology offish seed production in the tropics in order to overcome the constant water scarcity and its high operational cost . Accordingly , three experiments were carried out at the Fish Hatchery Unit , Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia to determine the optimum aeration rate and stocking density for fish larval rearing .In the first experiment , one hundred larvae of Puntius gonionotus , Cyprinus carpio , and Carassius auratus were reared for 20 days respectively in tanks with four different aeration rates ; 0,50, 500, and 5,000mL /min . From the results of the first experiment , the aeration rat es of 0 and 5 0 mL / mi n , 5 0 and 500 mL/min , and 50 mL /min were found to be the optimum rates for the larval rearing of Puntius gonionotus , Cyprinus carpio , and Carassius auratus respectively

Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. The study sought to explore different types of knowledge for teaching mathematics in selected schools in Mthatha in South Africa. A survey design which used both quantitative and qualitative aspects of research was used in the study. Task sheets, observational schedules and interview schedules were used to collect data. Participants were made up of 6 Grade 9 mathematics teachers from 6 schools out of 25 schools in circuit 3 in the Mthatha District of Education. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to analyse the data. Frequency tables, pie charts and histogram graphs were used to present quantitative data based on observation while verbal quotes were presented to support themes that emerged from qualitative data gleaned from task sheets and interview schedules. These were analysed by means of content analysis. The findings of the study revealed that mathematics knowledge (conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adoptive reasoning and productive disposition), knowledge of instructional practices (curriculum, tasks and tools for teaching) were limited with regard to most of the teachers in the Mthatha District. These related to many factors such as unqualified mathematics teachers, lack of in-service training, inadequate teaching and learning material, teachers’ attitudes towards mathematics etc. It was recommended that the Department of Education should organize regular in-service training for mathematics teachers in order to improve the quality of mathematics teaching and also keep mathematics teachers updated. There is also a need for department to supply adequate teaching and learning resources to schools in order to improve teachers’ knowledge of instructional practices. Furthermore, teachers need to update themselves in order to acquire sound pedagogical content knowledge for effective teaching. The Department of Education should try to motivate mathematics teachers by financing their efforts to upgrade themselves. Moreover there is a need for the department to strengthen their supervision team in order to monitor mathematics teachers in schools. This will help teachers to prepare better for mathematics lessons

Climatological study on large-scale situation associated with the cool summer around the Northeastern Japan in 1990s (in comparison with that in 1970s)

It is pointed out by the previous studies that the Baiu front tends to stagnate around the Japan Islands even in midsummer season in 1990s, although the global warming is going on. The present study examined the climatological features of the appearance of daily fronts on the surface weather maps and the large-scale factors associated with the activity of the polar frontal zone to the north of the Baiu frontal zone based on the observational data in the summer of 1971-2000. It was found that the midsummer when the Baiu front tends to stagnate around the Japan Islands appeared rather frequently in 1970s as in 1990s. However, the baroclinicity around the Eurasian polar frontal zone was stronger in 1970s than in 1990s. Thus while the fronts around the Japan Islands in midsummer were greatly due to the southward invasion of cold front associated with the disturbances on the polar frontal zone in 1970s, the Okhotsk High tends to stagnates to the northeast of the fronts around the Japan Islands in 1990s

Anxiety and Feelings toward Their Baby among Pregnant Women with Uterine Leiomyomas

Pregnant women with uterine leiomyomas may experience anxiety toward their pregnancies and unfavorable feelings toward their infants. From March to July 2010, we distributed anonymous self-recorded questionnaires to 200 pregnant women who visited Okayama Central Hospital for an antenatal check-up after informed consent was provided, and 132 women (23 pregnant women with uterine leiomyomas) were included in our study. Among the multiparous women in their first trimester, the women with uterine leiomyomas had a higher rate of anxiety than those without uterine leiomyomas. ʻAvoidanceʼ scores on the Feeling Toward the Baby Scale were significantly higher in the leiomyoma group. The conflict index scores tended to be higher in the leiomyoma group. A multivariate analysis revealed no factors associated with trait-anxiety scores, whereas high state-anxiety scores were correlated with low age;however, there was no correlation between these scores and uterine leiomyomas. Although no factors were associated with State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and approach scores toward the baby, avoidance and conflict index scores were associated with the existence of uterine leiomyomas. In pregnant women with uterine leiomyomas, efforts should be made to reduce anxiety in the first trimester, and support should be provided to help these women develop positive feelings toward their babies

Four Cases of Valvular Diseases Due to Nonpenetrating Cardiac Trauma

During the past 15 years we have managed four patients who suffered isolated valvular lesions from blunt chest trauma. Three patients were injured intraffic accidents and another fell from a height. Injured valves were mitral valves in three patients, tricuspid valves in two and aortic valve in one. One individual had a combination of aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valvular lesions. The procedures performed were mitral valve replacement in 2 patients and mitral repair in one, tricuspid valve replacement in one and repair in one, aortic valve replacement in one. The outcome of those patients were fairly well and all returned to their regular jobs．　</p

Earthquake Resistant Piles Reinforced with Ground Walls

Get PDF
A method for reducing earthquake load acting on piles by means of ground walls installed around pile foundation is proposed. First, a shaking table test was carried out. Test specimens are 1/40 scale structural models, which consist of soil, piles and a building with or without ground walls. The pile head moment of the specimens with ground walls show only 60% of that of the specimens without the ground walls. An FEM analysis was carried out for both cases and the results were compared with the test results. The comparison showed a good agreement. Furthermore, a simplified calculation method is proposed. This method takes account of the inertia force of buildings and the earth pressure to piles. The earth pressure is represented by Winkler\u27s springs. This simplified model gives a good agreement with those experimental and analytical results and is proved to be applicable to design purposes
