Today, communication between students and teachers, a major component through which these relationships are facilitated, is taking place via social networking sites (SNS). In this study, we examined the associations between student-teacher relationship and student-teacher Facebook-mediated communication. The study included Israeli middle- and high-school students, ages 12-19 years old (n=667). Student-teacher relationships were compared between sub-groups of students, based on their type of Facebook connection to their teachers (or the lack of such a connection); their attitudes towards a policy that prohibits Facebook connection with teachers; and their perceptions of using Facebook for learning. Regarding students’ attitudes towards banning student-teacher communication via SNS and towards using Facebook for learning, we found significant differences between three groups of students: those who do not want to connect with their teachers on Facebook, those who are connected with a teacher of theirs on Facebook, and those who are not co4tionship and student-teacher Facebook-mediated communication. We argue that in the case of student-teacher Facebookmediated communication, there is a gap between students’ expectations and in-practice experience. The key to closing this gap lies in both policy and effective implementatio

Teachers’ professional development for ICT integration: towards a reciprocal relationship between research and practice

Teachers in the 21st century are facing new challenges as a result of the expanding possibilities of ICT integration in every aspect of the school milieu. Studies have shown the potential of teacher professional development (TPD) that is tailored to local conditions as well as global components and takes advantage of mutual support among teachers, as well as modeling of effective practices. The goal of the paper is to consider the issue of TPD with reference to the usage of ICT as a lever for educational change in a systemic manner, based on the application of local as well as international research. This paper will synthesize some key issues and challenges for TPD in the ICT-saturated 21st century, illustrated in four cases presented herein, which synthesize elements of practice and theory. Based on the literature and the four case studies, we suggest a conceptual model for identifying and evaluating TPD practices using ICT as a lever for educational change and innovation, accompanied by research aimed to develop TPD models. We include suggestions for more effectively linking research to practice and will lay out possible research directions, as a means of facilitating evidence-based decisions and policies

Responding to challenges in teacher professional development for ICT integration in education

There is wide agreement that teacher professional development (TPD) is a necessary element in educational change, especially for the more effective application of technology to enhance learning. The research literature reports many examples of successful TPD but there remain many challenges to wider and deeper success in the variety of different contexts. Discussion by the thematic working group on TPD at EDUsummIT 2015 in Bangkok identified several challenges to successful TPD. This paper discusses those challenges, describes four cases of successful TPD from varied contexts, and derives a model for TPD based on observed commonalities in the cases

Upbringing in a Digital World: Opportunities and Possibilities

In our article, we refer to the interrelation between upbringing and education, within the context of an emerging paradigm of upbringing as a new construct. First we discuss upbringing in the digital era. Then, we state the main concerns involving this theme, which we label as key challenges for upbringing in the digital world. This is followed by the main challenges for upbringing in the digital era: an ecological (environmental) challenge, an intergenerational and intercultural challenge, the challenge of creating an educational continuum, and the challenge of upbringing digital citizens as informed adults, as well as possible ways of tackling these challenges. Finally, we suggest recommendations to policymakers, researchers and practitioners for each of the challenges and end with some conclusions on this theme

Research-based implications for policy and practice: outcomes from EDUsummIT 2019 (Quebec) – The 6th International Summit on Information Technology in Education

EDUsummIT (International Summit on ICT in Education) is a global knowledge building community of researchers, educational practitioners, and policy makers committed to supporting the effective integration of research and practice in the field of ICT in education. In 2019, more than 100 researchers, practitioners and policy makers from across the world have gathered to discuss ways to fast track what researchers know about information technology in education, into sound policies and best practices at the local, regional, and national/international level. This symposium focuses on outcomes from the Thematic Working Groups (TWGs) from EDUsummIT 2019, then seeks audience feedback and input on the findings and ways to best bring the Call to Action recommendations into implemented reality. Five Thematic Working Group topics relevant to an EdMedia audience will be featured in this symposium, followed by an integrative Call to Action summary. Presenters will invite feedback, suggestions and recommendation from attendees during all phases of the symposium. Especially encouraged will be discussion of how individual attendees might take appropriate portions of the recommendations away from the symposium and begin implementations at their local levels

Assessing the development of global competence in teacher education programmes: internal consistency and reliability of a set of rubrics

ABSTRACTGlobal competence is a complex concept as it is multifaceted, composite, multi-layered, multidimensional, and can be viewed from several perspectives. A previous study validated a set of rubrics designed to assess pre-service teachers’ development of global competence. The research presented in this paper tested the internal consistency and reliability of the set of rubrics in order to create an instrument validated within the international context that was robust and consistent from a methodological point of view. The set of rubrics was self-administered online by 729 pre-service teachers studying in 12 teacher education programmes across 10 different countries around the world. The data analysis showed a high level of reliability and internal consistency of the rubrics, indicating their ability to assess pre-service teachers’ global competence. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis suggested changes to two areas of the rubrics
