    Contaminated Sediment Transport During Floodsl

    Get PDF
Over the past 48 years, operations and waste disposal activities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have resulted in the contamination of parts of the White Oak Creek catchment. The contaminants presenting the highest risk to human health and the environment are particle reactive and are associated with the soils and sediments in the White Oak Creek drainage system. The erosion of these sediments during floods can result in the transport of contaminants both within the catchment and off-site into the Clinch River. A data collection program and a modeling investigation are being used to evaluate the probability of contaminated sediment transport during floods and to develop strategies for controlling off-site transport under present and future conditions

Character Recognition Using A Modular Spatiotemporal Connectionist Model

We describe a connectionist model for recognizing handprinted characters. Instead of treating the input as a static signal, the image is scanned over time and converted into a time-varying signal. The temporalized image is processed by a spatiotemporal connectionist network suitable for dealing with time-varying signals. The resulting system offers several attractive features, including shift-invariance and inherent retention of local spatial relationships along the temporalized axis, a reduction in the number of free parameters, and the ability to process images of arbitrary length. Connectionist networks were chosen as they offer learnability, rapid recognition, and attractive commercial possibilities. A modular and structured approach was taken in order to simplify network construction, optimization and analysis. Results on the task of handprinted digit recognition are among the best report to date on a set of real-world ZIP code digit images, provided by the United States Postal Service. The system achieved a 99.1% recognition rate on the training set and a 96.0% recognition rate on the test set with no rejections. A 99.0% recognition rate on the test set was achieved when 14.6% of the images were rejected

    The RAFOS System

The RAFOS float is a small neutrally buoyant subsurface order, which, like its big brother the SOFAR float, uses the deep sound (or SOFAR) channel to determine its position as a function of time. Whereas the SOFAR float transmits to moored receivers, the ∼12 kg glass pipe RAFOS float listens for accurately timed signals from moored sound sources to determine its position. The acoustic signal detection and norm of data are all handled by a CMOS microprocessor in the float. The data are recovered at the end of its mission when the float surface and telemeters its memory contents to Systeme Argos, a satellite-borne platform location and data collection system. Just a few sound sources provide navigation for an arbitrary number of floats

Déporter : politiques de déportation et répression en France occupée : 1940-1944

Deportations by means of large-scale transports of 1,000 people, small convoys of 50 prisoners, killing executions, reckless slaughter. ... German repression in Occupied France took many forms. The measure of this repression that claimed the largest number of victims in Occupied France from 1940 to 1944 was deportation. Tens of thousands - at least 60,500 people from France's northern and southern occupied zones - were subject to this enormous forced transfer to the Reich's concentrationary and prison systems. This study demonstrates that to comprehend deportees as a group, we must first focus on the steps involved in their deportation. The concept of deportation policies has enabled us to think through such a process. By envisaging deportation as a congeries of policies, we can examine the objectives of the Germans, specify transfer conditions, and explain their results. Further, this work offers an indispensable contextualization by placing these deportation policies within the larger framework of the repressive methods established in Occupied France. Finally, because this subject could not be delimited and explored using this approach after the World War Il, we discuss the function of representations and of memory, as well as their ramifications for historiography.Déportations dans des grands transports de mille personnes, petits convois d'une cinquantaine de détenus, fusillades, massacres aveugles ...

Cyclic Sieving of Increasing Tableaux and small Schr\"oder Paths

An increasing tableau is a semistandard tableau with strictly increasing rows and columns. It is well known that the Catalan numbers enumerate both rectangular standard Young tableaux of two rows and also Dyck paths. We generalize this to a bijection between rectangular 2-row increasing tableaux and small Schr\"oder paths. We demonstrate relations between the jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux developed by H. Thomas and A. Yong and the combinatorics of tropical frieze patterns. We then use this jeu de taquin to present new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon of V. Reiner, D. Stanton, and D. White, generalizing results of D. White and of J. Stembridge.Comment: 20 page

Perceptions towards aqua-based exercise among older adults with osteoarthritis who have discontinued participation in this exercise mode

    Get PDF
Aim: This study aimed to investigate reasons for ceasing participation in aqua-based exercise among older adults with osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Eleven adults over 60 years of age with OA participated in one of two focus groups, during which they discussed barriers to aqua-based exercise and the potential benefits of this exercise mode. Each focus group was audiotaped, transcribed and then analysed using the general inductive thematic approach. The investigators reached a consensus on all coding categories and then identified themes. Results: Key barriers identified were: a lack of suitable classes; insufficient instructor knowledge, which often led to increased pain; cold water and the changing facilities. Key perceived benefits included increased physical ability in water and social interaction. Conclusions: A greater understanding of reasons for ceasing participation in aqua-based exercise among older adults with OA may help facilitate development of suitable exercise programs that minimise barriers for this group
